Abstract

With the increasing irresponsible exploitation of natural resources, environmental damage has become increasingly concerning, particularly in the mining sector, which has a broad impact on ecosystems and the livelihoods of surrounding communities. The environmental crisis caused by mining activities in Indonesia demands a new approach to more sustainable resource management. This study aims to explore the role of religious moderation from the perspective of eco-theology, which has the potential to offer solutions for natural resource management. Eco-theology provides spiritual principles that can be integrated into environmental policies, creating a balance between economic interests, ecology, and societal well-being. This research is a literature review employing a descriptive analysis method. The results show that eco-theology offers a relevant framework for shifting the paradigm of mining management from anthropocentrism to ecocentrism. Religious organizations have great potential to promote sustainable mining management by incorporating spiritual values into environmental practices. Religious moderation serves as a foundational pillar in strengthening ecological awareness, improving the relationship between humans and nature, and encouraging sustainable development aligned with religious principles.

Abstract

This study examines the influence of Indonesia's Counterterrorism Special Detachment 88 unit (Densus 88 AT) assistance program on former terrorism convicts in Cirebon Regency, West Java, focusing on changes in their religious beliefs and attitudes. With security concerns surrounding violent extremism and terrorism in Indonesia, this research addresses the challenge of managing terrorism convicts who have completed their sentences, given the significant number of former terrorist offenders in certain regions. Using a case study approach, the research employs narrative analysis to collect primary data through observations, interviews, and a literature review. The fieldwork occurred in two phases between February and May 2021, involving former terrorism convicts, Densus 88 AT personnel, and Ministry of Religious Affairs officials. The study’s findings demonstrate shifts in socio-religious beliefs among the four informants, moving from extremist takfiri views to more moderate perspectives. Their paths to radicalization were diverse, influenced by groups like JAD and NII. The research highlights prisons as spaces for both radicalization and deradicalization, with interactions and exposure to alternative knowledge influencing changes in religious views. While Densus 88 AT’s economic recovery activities did not directly impact religious beliefs, they fostered attitudes conducive to religious interventions, such as flexible thinking and positive emotional attitudes. The study recommends involving religious leaders and educators to support economic recovery initiatives and promote a more moderate religious outlook among former terrorists. Enhanced collaboration among stakeholders is crucial to reinforce and effectively implement such programs, particularly with many terrorism convicts nearing the end of their sentences.

Abstract

The tafsir (Qur’anic commentary) is one of the essential tools for explaining and deepening the understanding of the teachings of the Qur’an within the community. Besides serving as a religious instrument, tafsir often reflects cultural richness by integrating Islamic aspects with local cultural values. This study aims to explore how the cultural identity of the Sundanese people is reflected in the Tafsir Raudhatul Irfan fi Ma’rifatil Qur’an, written by K.H. Ahmad Sanusi from Sukabumi. The research method used is descriptive-analytical with a qualitative approach. The findings of this study indicate that the cultural identity in the Tafsir Raudhatul Irfan is evident in several aspects of local wisdom, particularly in the field of language. The Sundanese language used in this tafsir is the daily language of the mufassir (commentator). Thus, the writing of this tafsir was primarily intended for the students in Islamic boarding schools and the Sundanese community who understand the language rather than for a broader audience. Furthermore, the cultural identity is also reflected in the writing system, where the mufassir utilizes the Pegon script to convey his tafsir. The Pegon script, which is a writing system that uses Arabic characters for the Sundanese, Javanese, and Madurese languages, is employed in this tafsir as a means to preserve and maintain local literary traditions while still conveying Islamic teachings.

Abstract

The crisis of modern life often leads to confusion and spiritual emptiness in individuals, driven by the dominance of materialism and the marginalization of spiritual values. This condition causes modern humans to experience inner emptiness, confusion about the meaning of life, and difficulty in facing the complexities of life crises. This study aims to examine Seyyed Hossein Nasr’s views on religious spirituality as a response to the crisis experienced by modern humans. This research employs a descriptive qualitative approach with library study as the primary source. The data are analysed using logical reasoning both inductively and deductively to develop arguments regarding Nasr’s views on religious spirituality and the crisis of modern humanity. The findings of this study indicate that Nasr views religious spirituality, particularly the teachings of Sufism, as a path to overcoming spiritual dryness and the loss of meaning in life within modern society. Concepts such as the relationship between exoteric and esoteric, unity, the perfect human (Insan Kamil), and the importance of maintaining a balance between the external and internal dimensions are central to Nasr’s thought in addressing this crisis. The implication of this study is the necessity of reviving spiritual values within religion as a solution to the confusion and spiritual emptiness often experienced by modern humans.

Abstract

Purpose – This study aims to analyze how digital transformation in Islam has altered the structure of religious authority, using the Post-Normal Times (PNT) approach developed by Ziauddin Sardar. Method – This research employs a qualitative-descriptive approach, analyzing the digital da’wah phenomenon, specifically social media's role in shaping religious authority. Result – The findings indicate that the digitalization of religion has caused a shift in religious authority from the traditional hierarchy dominated by scholars and religious institutions to a popularity-based authority, where figures like celebrity preachers and Islamic influencers have become dominant. Social media facilitates the spread of da’wah, but also gives rise to phenomena such as instant fatwas, fragmentation of religious teachings, and the commodification of religion. In the Post-Normal Times framework, the uncertainty of authority increases, where algorithms and popularity replace traditional scholarly credibility. Implication – This study has significant implications for managing digital da’wah, religious literacy, and the need for regulation to minimize negative impacts, such as spreading misinformation and oversimplifying religious teachings. Originality/Value – This study offers an original contribution by applying the Post-Normal Times theory to analyze changes in religious authority within the context of digital da’wah, a topic not widely discussed in the literature on religion and social media.
