Abstract

Brown planthopper (Nilaparvata lugens Stal) population from Klaten and Yogyakarta may develop into new biotype, but research on the genetic aspect of these populations is limited.  Random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD)-PCR technique was used to identify the genetic similarity of brown planthopper population from Klaten and Yogyakarta compared to the population of nearby region. Brown planthopper were collected from paddy field in Klaten, Yogyakarta, Sukoharjo, Boyolali, Karanganyar, Sragen, and Ngawi. Five random primers, namely OPB 01, OPB 07, OPC 04, OPC 08, and OPN 15 were used to amplify the brown planthopper. The present study revealed that five random primers produced DNA band patterns clearly and comparable. However, no primer produced DNA band that could differentiate the brown planthopper population from Klaten and Yogyakarta compare to the population from nearby region. Based on dendrogram, the population from Klaten and Yogyakarta showed a genetic similarity to the nearby population from Sukoharjo, Boyolali and Sragen, except from Karanganyar and Ngawi. Intra-population genetic studies of brown planthopper from Klaten and Yogyakarta may be needed to reveal more genetic characters.

Abstract

Scandium is classified as a rare earth element. Its existences are geochemically in small amounts as associate minerals. Consequently, scandium production is minimally from processing residues of major minerals. Indonesia has large bauxite deposits, and it is processed into alumina, producing bauxite residue as a by-product. The bauxite residue contains rare earth metals, including scandium. In this study, various ways of extracting scandium from bauxite residue slag were carried out. The bauxite residue beneficiation process was done through a smelting reduction process followed by magnetic separation. Scandium extractions were carried out from the bauxite residue slag through a leaching process with concentrated sulfuric, sulfation, alkali fusion, and a 2-stage acid leaching. The best percentage of scandium extracted was obtained at 88.40%, using the 2-stage acid leaching at the acid concentration of 500 g/kg, the temperature of 90oC, and the leaching time at 3 hours for each leaching stage. In addition, the best neodymium extracted achieved  76,97%, using the alkali fusion, fused in NaOH at 700oC for 3 hours.

Abstract

Abstract

Pollination is important in cashew production, thus it is important to understand the factor determining the presence of pollination in cashew habitat. The research was carried out by field surveys in cashew farms to record the insects that exhibited nectar and pollen foraging activities on wild and cashew flowers. This study recorded the similarity between flower-insect visitors on wild plants and cashews, namely families of Apidae, Halictidae, Pieridae, and Andrenidae. Apidae were the most important flower visitors, but the honey bee, Apis sp. as an important pollinator, did not show the highest abundance. Wild flowering plants in cashew fields have the potential to play a role in the conservation of cashew pollinators.

Abstract

Wood vinegar is a liquid made from steam cooled wood smoke in the sublimation process. Recently, this material is known to be used as a biopesticide, so it does not have side effects that are harmful to the environment, especially for non-target insects. Ambarwati et al (2013) reported that wood vinegar can control cabbage heartworm (Crocidolomia pavonana) and has an effect in accelerating its life cycle. In addition, wood vinegar can also increase the weight of Edamame soybeans almost twice (Ramli et al, 2020) According to Sri Hartati et al (2013) wood vinegar is also able to inhibit the growth of conidium up to 76%. Mustard greens are vegetables that have good commercial value, but the production is fluctuating. One of the factors that influence the fluctuation of mustard greens production is the presence of Spodoptera litura caterpillars. The development of botanical pesticide is needed to substitute chemical pesticide. This research purposed to obtain an effective concentration of wood vinegar and an appropriate application method to control S. litura caterpillars. This research was conducted in the Laboratory of Plant Pest and Diseases Faculty of Agriculture, Sebelas Maret University (UNS) and in Satriyan, Ngrundul, Kebonarum, Klaten starting from May until August 2020. This study was conducted using a completely randomized experimental design (CRD) with two factors. First factor is concentration of wood vinegar from rice husk (0%, 2%, 4%, 8%, dan 16%) and second factor is application method (leaf dipping method and larvae spraying method). The result showed that wood vinegar with various concentrations tested has no effective effect on S. litura and application methods that used have no different effect.

Abstract

Natural enemies play an important role in the rice field ecosystem in achieving pest population balance. The jajar legowo planting system is a planting system that provides empty space for rows of plants that are thought to affect the types and population dynamics of natural enemies. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of applying the jajar legowo cropping system to the types and populations of natural enemies of rice pests. The research was conducted from April-June 2022 in Karanglo Village, Polanharjo, Klaten and the Laboratory of Plant Pests and Diseases, Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Sebelas Maret. The research was carried out in rice fields with conventional spacing systems (tegel) and jajar legowo 2:1. The variables observed were the type and population of predators and parasitoids along with the degree of parasitization of the rice pests. The results showed that the types of predators found in conventional land and Jajar Legowo were not different. The application of the jajar legowo cropping system increased the population of Paederus and Tetragnatha spider.
