Abstract

This research is a sociolinguistic study conducted in a simple scope of a campus setting. It aims at understanding the pronominal address system that is used in business conversational settings between sellers-buyers and canteen owners and their employees, as well as the responses from the speakers i.e. both the buyers and canteen employees. The theory used to achieve the goal is Brown and Gilman’s theory of pronominal address forms (1972). The analysis on the seven ways used by sellers in addressing (1) students; (2) security officers; (3) sellers from their own/same hometown; (4) sellers from different hometowns; (5) parking attendants; (6) photocopy employees; and (7) cleaning service employees, revealed that ‘addressing by name only’ was used to address younger people that the sellers had known already, as well as for addressing people whom they considered close, while the words “Mas” (brother), “Mbak” (sister), Ibu (madam), and Bapak (mister) were used for addressing older people as honorific titles that are deemed more respectful. The findings confirmed one of the Indonesians’ typical “Eastern” values, which is the use of specific pronominal address words in day-to-day lives. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian dalam bidang sosiolinguistik, yang dilakukan di ruang lingkup yang sederhana yaitu di lingkungan kampus. Penelitian ini berusaha mengungkapkan sistem sapaan yang digunakan pada tuturan seputar kegiatan perdagangan, antara penjual-pembeli maupun antara pemilik kantin dengan pegawainya dan respon yang diberikan oleh petutur, baik itu pembeli maupun pegawai kantin. Teori yang digunakan untuk mencapai tujuan tersebut adalah teori tutur sapa Brown dan Gilman (1972). Dari tujuh analisis penggunaan sapaan pedangang kepada (1) mahasiswa; (2) satpam; (3) sesame pedagang sedaerah; (4) sesama pedagan lain daerah; (5) petugas parkir; (6) petugas fotokopi; dan (petugas cleaning service), ditemukan panggilan “nama” sapaan bagi yang lebih muda karena sudah mengenal dan sebagai sapaan langsung secara akrab, dan panggilan “Mas”, “Mba”, “Ibu”, dan “Bapak” bagi yang lebih tua karena untuk lebih menghormati. Hal ini sejalan dengan ciri khas budaya ketimuran orang Indonesia dan kata sapaan yang digunakan dalam kehidupan sehari-hari.

Abstract

This study investigates the event of a group of Buddhist monks praying during the Vesak holiday in 2024 at the Baiturrahman Mosque in Bengkal, Temanggung, and the subsequent public responses on social media. In Indonesia, where Islam is the predominant religion, there are sometimes interfaith  encounters that transcend conventional borders. The monks’ prayer, which was recorded and extensively shared on social media sites including Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok, provoked a range of responses, from appreciation for religious tolerance to concerns about the sanctity of sacred space. Using mediatization and framing theories, the study explores how the incident was portrayed and how it shaped public perception. A mixed-method approach, combining sentiment and thematic analyses of social media comments, identifies themes of societal harmony, religious identity, and tolerance. Positive sentiments celebrating interfaith tolerance predominated, though some saw it as overstepping religious boundaries. This case highlights social media’s role in framing religious discourse and influencing opinions, emphasizing its impact on interfaith relations and societal tolerance in Indonesia. The study sheds light on how digital media shapes views on interreligious engagement and coexistence.

Abstract

Despite the positive impacts, there are challenges in how Muslim fashion is digitally represented, particularly in how social media can unintentionally reinforce stereotypes or uphold Western beauty standards shaped by colonial legacies. Therefore, critical engagement is essential to ensure a more inclusive and unbiased portrayal. This study examines postcolonial and gender representations in Indonesian Muslim fashion brands on social media using a qualitative content analysis approach. The study analyses four Instagram accounts using an interpretive framework: @vanillahijab, @winonamodest, @hijabalila, and @nusseyba.id. By integrating postcolonial and gender theories, this research critically explores the influence of colonial discourse on hijab brands in the digital space. The findings reveal that these brands' social media platforms serve as a space for cultural reclamation, challenge traditional gender roles, and offer more diverse representations of Muslim women. However, many still reflect colonial narratives, particularly in promoting Westernized beauty ideals such as fair (white/light) skin, a thin, and a tall figure. Regarding gender representation, the content predominantly depicts women as professionals actively engaged in the workforce. These highlight the need for a more conscious and inclusive approach in digital Muslim fashion branding, encouraging brands to actively challenge colonial beauty norms and promote diverse representations that resonate with Indonesia's rich cultural and ethnic identities.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the film Budi Pekerti (2023) directed by Wregas Bhanuteja using Teun A. van Dijk’s critical discourse analysis approach. The background of this research is based on the importance of understanding morality and the influence of social media in contemporary society, particularly within the contexts of education and family. This research employs a qualitative descriptive method, focusing on three levels of discourse structure: macrostructure, superstructure, and microstructure. The findings indicate that Budi Pekerti not only conveys messages of personal ethics but also critiques the social system that reinforces prejudice and stereotypes through media discourse. The study reveals that public perception of individuals is heavily shaped by the dynamics of public opinion constructed through digital media. Thus, the film contributes to a broader understanding of the importance of media literacy and social empathy.   Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis film Budi Pekerti (2023) karya Wregas Bhanuteja dengan menggunakan pendekatan analisis wacana kritis model Teun A. van Dijk. Latar belakang penelitian ini dilandasi oleh pentingnya pemaknaan moralitas dan pengaruh media sosial dalam kehidupan masyarakat modern, khususnya dalam konteks pendidikan dan keluarga. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif dengan fokus pada tiga struktur wacana, yaitu struktur makro, suprastruktur, dan struktur mikro. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa film Budi Pekerti tidak hanya menyampaikan pesan etika personal, tetapi juga mengkritik sistem sosial yang memperkuat prasangka dan stereotip melalui konstruksi wacana media. Temuan ini mengindikasikan bahwa persepsi masyarakat terhadap individu sangat dipengaruhi oleh dinamika opini publik yang terbentuk melalui media digital. Dengan demikian, film ini memberikan kontribusi terhadap pemahaman masyarakat mengenai pentingnya literasi media dan empati sosial.

Abstract

Bahasa Arab Fushā adalah bahasa standar, sedangkan bahasa Arab 'Āmmiyyah adalah bahasa non-standar atau bahasa sehari-hari (digunakan secara informal dalam percakapan sehari-hari). Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menunjukkan perbedaan penanda kala (tenses) pada verba Arab Fushā dan bahasa Arab 'Āmmiyyah dialek Mesir. Comrie (1985) merumuskan tiga bentuk kala mutlak: sekarang (present tense), masa lalu (past tense), dan masa depan (future tense). Data diambil menggunakan teknik deskriptif sinkronik (descriptive synchronic), yang dikumpulkan sebagaimana adanya dan dijelaskan sesuai dengan karakteristik alami teks (Djajasudarman, 1993). Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan mencari sumber data menggunakan dialek Arab 'Āmmiyyah Mesir (buku dan percakapan sehari-hari orang Mesir). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa penanda kala dalam bahasa Arab Fushā dan bahasa Arab 'Āmmiyyah dialek Mesir terjadi pada waktu sekarang (present tense) dan waktu yang akan datang (future tense) yang ditandai dengan perbedaan huruf di awal verbanya. Dalam bahasa Arab Fushā untuk kala sekarang (present tense) ditandai dengan adanya harf mudhoro'ah yaitu ي [ya] pada verba yang disesuaikan dengan subjeknya, sedangkan dalam bahasa Arab ‘Āmmiyyah dialek Mesir ditandai dengan menambahkan huruf "ب" [ba] di awal sebelum verba. Selanjutnya untuk kala mendatang (future tense), dalam bahasa Arab Fushā ditandai dengan adanya huruf س [sa] atau juga yang biasa dipakai سوف [saufa] yang kemudian diikuti oleh verbanya, sedangkan untuk bahasa Arab ‘Āmmiyyah ditandai dengan meletakkan huruf هـ [ha] di awal sebelum verba.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menjelaskan ideologi tentang bentuk tubuh perempuan yang sehat yang diciptakan melalui iklan. Wacana iklan menjadi menarik untuk dikaji dengan menggunakan analisis wacana kritis karena iklan merupakan salah satu media yang digunakan untuk menyampaikan suatu ideologi kepada masyarakat. Landasan teori yang digunakan adalah Analisis Wacana Kritis. Tiga tingkat analisis wacana kritis Norman Fairclough digunakan untuk menjelaskan konstruksi ideologi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa dari analisis teks (deskripsi), analisis proses (interpretasi), dan analisis sosial (penjelasan), iklan televisi WRP berupaya mengonstruksi ideologi, bahwa WRP dapat membuat tubuh langsing walaupun tetap makan.

Abstract

Penelitian ini adalah penelitian morfologi yang bertujuan untuk menemukan bentuk infleksi verba dalam bahasa Belanda baik yang teratur ataupun tidak teratur. Beberapa teori digunakan untuk mencapai tujuan tersebut, yaitu Verhaar (1999), Bauer (1988), dan Boiij (2005). Dari data hasil interviu dengan seorang informan, dihasilkan suatu kesimpulan bahwa 1) infleksi verba dalam bahasa Belanda mempunyai produktifitas yang terlihat jelas dan memiliki pola-pola yang terstruktur; 2) proses morfologis terkait infleksi tidak merubah kelas kata; 3) terdapat lima bentuk kala dalam bahasa Indonesia, dan 4) verba dalam bahasa Belanda terdiri atas verba beraturan dan tidak beraturan.

Abstract

Blending is widely recognized as a creative and productive word formation process in Indonesian, commonly found in media, branding, and everyday communication. Despite its popularity in informal contexts, the use of blended words in formal government documents has not been thoroughly examined. This study explores the use of blending in the 2023 Jakarta Smart City (JSC) Annual Report, aiming to identify the types of blends and analyze their structural and semantic characteristics. Using a qualitative document analysis method and drawing on Mattiello’s framework, the research classifies blend words into three main categories: morphotactic, morphonological, and morphosemantic. The findings indicate that morphotactic blending, particularly total blends, is the most frequently occurring type. Moreover, the study reveals innovative blending patterns in Indonesian formal discourse, including the merging of blending with acronyms, as in Satpol PP and JakISPU, the adaptation of blends influenced by pronunciation, exemplified by Tije (from Trans Jakarta), and the integration of cross-linguistic elements such as TopEdu and JakTrack. These findings suggest that blending has expanded beyond its informal origins and now plays a significant role in shaping the language used in official and institutional communication. In addition, these patterns demonstrate how linguistic innovation functions as a tool for branding, accessibility, and modernization in bureaucratic language. By illustrating how blending enhances the clarity and appeal of government discourse, this study contributes to understanding the role of of morphological creativity in shaping inclusive, citizen-oriented, and digitally adaptive public communication in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study analyses the meaning of the lyrics of the JKT48 song entitled ‘Saatnya Kesempatan’ (Time for Opportunity) as a representation of self-development through a semantic approach. Using a descriptive qualitative method, this study identifies the lexical and contextual meanings in the lyrics transcript to reveal the motivational narrative within it. The results of the analysis show that diction such as opportunity, winner, destiny, goal, and dream serve as symbols of determination, confidence, and perseverance. The use of metaphors and repetition techniques reinforces the main message that listeners should not give up in the face of challenges. Structurally, the lyrics build a coherent emotional flow: starting from readiness to seize opportunities, a process of persistent struggle, to achievements that provide positive affirmation. These findings prove that popular song lyrics do not merely serve as entertainment, but also as a medium for conveying positive values and self-reflection. Academically, this research contributes to the study of contemporary linguistics and culture in understanding how the theme of self-development is represented and accepted by the younger generation through musical works.   Penelitian ini menganalisis makna lirik lagu JKT48 berjudul “Saatnya Kesempatan” sebagai representasi pengembangan diri melalui pendekatan semantik. Melalui metode kualitatif deskriptif, penelitian ini mengidentifikasi makna leksikal dan kontekstual pada transkrip lirik untuk mengungkap narasi motivasi di dalamnya. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa diksi seperti kesempatan, pemenang, takdir, tujuan, dan mimpi berfungsi sebagai simbol keteguhan, kepercayaan diri, dan ketekunan. Penggunaan metafora dan teknik pengulangan (repetisi) memperkuat pesan utama agar pendengar tidak menyerah menghadapi tantangan. Secara struktural, lirik lagu ini membangun aliran emosional yang koheren: dimulai dari kesiapan mengambil peluang, proses perjuangan yang gigih, hingga pencapaian yang memberikan afirmasi positif. Temuan ini membuktikan bahwa lirik lagu populer tidak sekadar berfungsi sebagai hiburan, tetapi juga menjadi media penyampai nilai positif dan refleksi diri. Secara akademis, penelitian ini berkontribusi pada studi linguistik dan budaya kontemporer dalam memahami bagaimana tema pengembangan diri direpresentasikan dan diterima oleh generasi muda melalui karya musik.

Abstract

The fast growth of digital technology in today's world makes digital literacy and education more important than ever. Many women in the Cisauk Subdistrict, near BSD City in Tangerang, still lack access to digital knowledge. It becomes difficult for them to support their families and participate in public services, education, and healthcare. To address this issue, the lecturer at Universitas Terbuka initiated a community service program to enhance digital skills among women. The program focused on the integrated health post (Posyandu) cadres, Family Welfare Empowerment Team (TP PKK) members, and homemakers. They took part in discussions, hands-on sessions, and mentoring. The learning was based on four main ideas. These are digital skills, safety, ethics, and culture. The training showed them how to use mobile apps for health, education, finance, and other services. After the program, the women showed familiarity and confidence in using digital tools. They learned how to protect their data, spot false information, and make safe choices when using the internet. Many also began sharing what they learned with their families and neighbours. This program suggests that targeted and locally adapted training initiatives can effectively bridge the digital divide among underserved populations. By equipping women with the skills to navigate digital environments, the program not only enhanced individual agency but also strengthened community-level resilience and participation. The success of this initiative underscores the importance of collaboration with local organizations and the necessity for ongoing support to achieve a lasting impact. Future programs should scale this model to other underserved areas and continue building digital competencies that promote inclusive digital transformation.
