Abstract

Al-Masudi (d. 956 CE), best known for Muruj al-Dhahab wa Maadin al-Jawhar (The Meadows of Gold and Mines of Gems), occupies an important position in the development of classical Islamic historiography. This study examines the historiographical method employed by Al-Masudi and evaluates its contribution to historical writing in the medieval Islamic world. Using the historical method through the stages of heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography, the research analyzes methodological features reflected in his major works. The findings indicate that Al-Masudi adopted an empirical, multidisciplinary, and comparative approach to historiography by combining observations derived from extensive travel with critical engagement with transmitted reports. His method incorporated geographical, ethnographic, and environmental perspectives within a thematic framework (al-tasnif al-mawdhu'i), allowing for a broader interpretation of historical phenomena. His engagement with diverse civilizations is reflected in his efforts to document and compare the customs, beliefs, and social practices of different societies rather than confining his narratives to a single cultural perspective. The study argues that Al-Masudi’s historiographical approach represents an important development within the Islamic intellectual tradition and continues to offer valuable insights for contemporary discussions on interdisciplinary and empirically informed historical inquiry.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the role of the Algemeene Vereeniging van Rubberplanters ter Oostkust van Sumatra (AVROS) in the recruitment and distribution system of plantation labor in East Sumatra during the period 1910–1942. Employing the historical method—comprising heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography—this study is further supported by the analytical framework of colonial capitalism and labor control theory. The findings reveal that AVROS functioned not merely as an employers’ association, but as an institution that actively organized, regulated, and distributed labor through centralized and bureaucratic mechanisms. While this system ensured efficiency in fulfilling plantation labor demands, it simultaneously reinforced asymmetrical power relations between employers and workers. Through instruments such as labor contracts, mobility control, and regulated labor distribution, AVROS contributed to the maintenance of an exploitative colonial labor structure. The study argues that plantation labor systems under colonial rule were shaped not only by economic imperatives but also by institutionalized mechanisms of social control. These findings advance the scholarship on colonial capitalism by demonstrating the inseparability of economic practices and coercive labor governance, while offering important insights into the structural dynamics of labor exploitation in colonial plantation economies.

Abstract

Rapid urban transformation has increased the need for non-formal Islamic educational institutions that strengthen both religious values and social cohesion. This study examines the history and development of the Darusshofa Majelis Taklim in Medan, the implementation of its da'wah activities, and its significance as a religious institution amid modernization. Employing a qualitative descriptive-analytical design, the research applies a historical approach to reconstruct the institution's development through in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation, with data analyzed through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The novelty of this study lies in integrating historical reconstruction with an analysis of the institutional development and socio-religious contribution of the Darusshofa Majelis Taklim within an urban context. The findings show that the institution originated from a local da'wah initiative pioneered by KH. Mufty Ahmad Nasichin, who successfully integrated Islamic teachings with community realities. Its activities promote spiritual education, strengthen social solidarity, and reinforce religious identity. Despite challenges arising from social change, urban lifestyles, and limited youth participation, the Darusshofa Majelis Taklim has remained a sustainable model of community-based da'wah and non-formal Islamic education in Medan.

Abstract

This article examines Syekh Hasan Maksum as the Mufti of the Deli Sultanate in the twentieth century, emphasizing his biography, scholarly works, and contributions to Islamic education in East Sumatra. Although widely recognized as a prominent Muslim scholar, his intellectual legacy has received limited scholarly attention. This study aims to analyze his life, works, and educational contributions within the socio-religious context of the Deli Sultanate. A qualitative biographical approach was employed by analyzing archival records, historical documents, manuscripts, and relevant literature to reconstruct the significant experiences that shaped his intellectual and institutional roles. The findings demonstrate that Syekh Hasan Maksum served not only as the Mufti of the Deli Sultanate but also as an influential Muslim intellectual whose scholarly works and educational activities advanced Islamic education in East Sumatra. His contributions illustrate the close relationship between religious authority, Islamic scholarship, and educational development during the twentieth century. This study contributes to Indonesian Islamic historiography by highlighting Syekh Hasan Maksum's intellectual legacy and enduring role in advancing Islamic education.

Abstract

This community service program aims to empower PKK mothers and children in Sipare Pare Village through training on eco-print tote bag production based on local assets. The program applied a participatory educational method using the Asset Based Community Development (ABCD) approach, which includes asset identification, participatory planning, implementation, and evaluation stages. The activity was carried out through hands-on practice in making eco-print tote bags by utilizing locally available leaves and plants as environmentally friendly natural materials. The results indicate an improvement in participants’ creativity and practical skills, as well as increased awareness of the potential for creative economy development based on local resources. Active participation and enthusiasm of the participants became key indicators of the program’s success. This activity is expected to encourage community economic independence and promote sustainable development of creative products at the village level.
