Abstract

Kitolod plant (isotoma longiflora (L) C.Presl) contains alkaloids, flavonoids, and saponins. The content of this compound has antibacterial activity. This study aims to determine the antibacterial activity of the n-hexane, ethyl acetate and water fractions from the ethanolic extract of kitolod leaves against Staphylococcus aureus, and to determine the most active fraction in inhibiting bacteria. This research is an experimental descriptive study. The ethanolic extract of kitolod leaves was obtained by maceration method using 96% ethanol solvent, the viscous extract obtained was fractionated with three solvents, and dissolved in 1% DMSO then tested for its antibacterial power by diffusion and dilution method against Staphylococcus aureus at concentrations of 15%, 20%, 25%, and 30% using ofloxacin positive control. The test results obtained were analyzed using the One Way Anova test followed by the Post Hoc Test using the Tukey method using SPSS16. The results of the test using the diffusion method showed that the ethanol extract, n-hexane fraction, ethyl acetate fraction and water fraction had antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus. The most active fraction was the water fraction at a concentration of 30%, with an average inhibition zone diameter of 19.0 mm. The inhibitory power was lower than the positive control ofloxacin (28.3 mm). The dilution method of the water fraction showed a minimum inhibitory concentration and a minimum kill concentration at a concentration of 15%.

Abstract

Lemongrass (Cymbogoncitratus (DC.) Stapf) leaves contain alkaloids, saponins, tannins, anthraquinones, steroids, phenols and flavonoids. Flavonoids act as antioxidants as they can reduce free radicals. This study aims to determine the total flavonoid content, antioxidant activity, and IC50 value of lemongrass leaf extract (Cymbogoncitratus (DC.) Stapf). Extracts were made by maceration using 96% ethanol as solvent. Testing of total flavonoid content with the AlCl3 method using UV-Vis spectrophotometry was carried out three times. The antioxidant activity test used the FRAP (ferric reducing antioxidant power) method on extracts containing 100, 200, 300, 400, and 500 ppm. The test results showed that the leaf extract of citronella (Cymbogoncitratus (DC.) Stapf) had a total flavonoid content of 22,60 mg QE/g extract. Furthermore, there was antioxidant activity in the leaf extract of lemongrass (Cymbogoncitratus (DC.) Stapf indicated by the formation of a blue color purplish when reacted with FRAP solution, and IC50 extract value was 71,59 ppm and included in the category of strong antioxidants.

Abstract

The pandemic encourages us to look for various ways to overcome it, from various sides, including physical mobility management, vaccine development, to drug discovery. Indonesia has long recognized and used medicinal plants as an effort to overcome health efforts. Piper betle Linn or betel is a plant known to have antiseptic properties. Traditional use is usually by boiling the betel leaf. Utilization of stew and betel leaf extract as natural antibacterial agents has advantages. This is because these plants have natural compounds that are safer than the use of drugs that contain synthetic ingredients. Research reveals that betel leaf with an extract content of more than 15% is equivalent to alcohol and ethanol content. Research and utilization of betel leaf as an antiseptic and hand sanitizer products have been done a lot, one of which is by using extracts and essential oils from betel leaves. The aim of this study was to compare the antibacterial activity of the betel leaf hand sanitizer formulation using extracts and essential oils against the tested bacteria. This research is a literature review. Information on the hand sanitizer formulation of Piper betle Linn betel leaf was collected from online databases such as Pub Med, Direct Scient, and Google Scholar.

Abstract

Candida albicans is a fungus that causes vaginal discharge in women. Leucorrhoea is a discharge from the vagina with a relatively small frequency, odorless, and clear. In Indonesia, there are many plants that have medicinal properties that are used in traditional medicine and are believed to have antifungal activities.Feminine hygiene soap is a liquid cleansing preparation for femininity which is made from basic ingredients and is used to clean the feminine area without causing irritation to the skin. This study aims to provide information about plants that have anti-fungal activity and their formulation as a good female liquid soap preparation with their activity as an anti-candida albicans. The method in this research is by searching literature studies from various journals. The results showed that each female liquid soap preparation with plants as the active substance gave different inhibition diameters. The difference between the active substance and the additive in the formulation affects the resulting inhibition diameter. Based on the results of a literature review, basil, cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. capitata alba) and waru (Hibiscus tiliaceus), has activity as an antifungal against Candida albicans.

Abstract

Antioxidants are compounds that have a molecular structure that can donate electrons to free radical molecules and can break the chain reaction of free radicals. This research was conducted to analyze the flavonoid content in the ethanol extract of ketepeng cina leaves and to determine the antioxidant activity of the ethanol extract and the fraction of the ketepeng cina leaves. This research is an experimental descriptive study. Ketepeng cina leaves were extracted using 96% ethanol, then partitioned using the liquid-liquid partition method. Flavonoid levels were determined using UV-VIS spectrophotometry at a wavelength of 435 nm. Antioxidant activity test using the ABTS method at a wavelength of 740 nm. The results showed that the flavonoid content of the ethanol extract of the ketepeng cina leaves was 11,054 ± 0.228 QE. The results of the antioxidant activity test of the ethanol extract, n-hexane fraction, ethyl acetate fraction, and water fraction with IC50 values were 23,709 ppm, 106,598 ppm, 14,534 ppm, and 49,844 ppm, respectively. The highest antioxidant activity was indicated by the ethyl acetate fraction with an IC50 value of 14,534 ppm with very strong activity

Abstract

One of the herbal plants that have medicinal properties is Abrus precatorius L or commonly known as Saga in Indonesia. Empirically, the boiled water of saga leaves is widely used as an ingredient in cough medicine, cancer sores and swollen tonsils. The chemical constituents of antibacterial activity in the saga leaves are glycosides (abrusoside AD and abrusgenin), flavonoids and saponins (glycerin). This study aims to determine the antibacterial activity of extracts and fractions from saga leaves and the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) of the most active fraction of saga leaves on the growth of Streptococcus mutans ATCC 25175. Saga leaf powder was macerated using 96% ethanol, then fractionated using n-hexane, ethyl acetate, water as solvent, 96% ethanol extract, and n-hexane fraction. The antibacterial activity test using the diffusion method showed that the extract, n-hexane fraction, ethyl acetate fraction, and water fraction of saga leaves had antibacterial activity against Streptococcus mutans. The most active fraction was the ethyl acetate fraction, with a concentration of 50% with an average inhibition zone diameter of 12.2 mm. The ethyl acetate fraction from saga leaves had the most active antibacterial activity compared to ethanol extract, n-hexane fraction, ethyl acetate fraction, and water fraction, as seen from the average diameter of the inhibition zone obtained. The test results of the dilution method of the ethyl acetate fraction of saga leaves showed a Minimum Inhibitory Concentration of 12.5% and a Minimum Killing Concentration of 25%.
