Abstract

Malignant disease or cancer is a disease caused abnormal growth of certain cells, characterized continuous, unlimited growth, uncoordinated with surrounding tissue and not functioning physiologically. According to the National Cancer Institute, there was a significant increase in the number of pediatric cancers in United States from 13.8 per 100,000 children in 1973 to 17.6 per 100,000 children in 2005. Chemotherapy shows high efficacy in the treatment of cancer in children, especially on cancer that can not be treated by surgery or radiation alone. Radiation therapy can be used as a curative therapy to reduce tumor size or as palliative to alleviate symptoms. However, the administration of chemotherapy and radiotherapy associated with many side effects. Mucositis is a reactive process that resembles inflammation on the oropharynx mucous membranes, and often accour as the side effect of chemotherapy or radiotherapy. Management of oral mucositis in children who receive chemoradiation varies, both pharmacologically and nonpharmacologically. At present, there is no gold standard for management of oral mucositis in children.

Abstract

Leukemia adalah keganasan yang paling sering terjadi pada anak. Status nutrisi pada kasus leukemia anak akan lebih baik dinilai menggunakan antropometri lengan, seperti area otot lengan tengah. Leukemia is the most common malignancy in children. Nutritional status of children with leukemia is best measured with anthropometric arm such as mid-arm muscle area.

Abstract

Oral mucositis is an inflammation of the oral cavity mucosa; it is the most common complication of cancer chemotherapy. The incidence rate of oral mucositis in pediatric and adolescent population is 40-50%. Oral mucositis can cause negative impacts on quality of life, dose reduction of anticancer treatment, and increase inhealth care cost. Basic principles of oral health care consisting of periodic oral health evaluation, educating patient and/or parents, tooth brushing, flossing, and mouth rinsing are recommended to reduce the incidence of oral mucositis.

Abstract

Iron deficiency anemia is the most frequent disease caused by nutritional deficiency worldwide. Children with iron deficiency anemia suffer from various immunity impairments, including nonspecific, cellular, and humoral immunity; increasing their vulnerability to infection. Iron deficiency anemia along with infection will aggravate negative impacts toward children’s health status.

Abstract

Background: Malaria remains a significant public health concern, particularly in endemic regions, is frequently associated with anemia in children. Accurate hemoglobin measurement is crucial for diagnosing anemia, especially in resource-limited settings. This study compares the accuracy of SD Biosensor Standard G6PD Analyzer with Hemocue HB301 System for hemoglobin measurement among children in malaria-endemic areas. Objective: To determine the sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), negative predictive value (NPV), positive likelihood ratio (LR+), negative likelihood ratio (LR-), pretest odds, post-test odds, and overall accuracy of the SD Biosensor Standard G6PD Analyzer compared to the Hemocue HB301 System. Method: This cross-sectional diagnostic study involved 325 children aged 6-18 years in Kualuh Leidong District. Secondary data were obtained from a previous study conducted in August 2024, using a total sampling technique. Result: The mean hemoglobin level measured by SD Biosensor Standard G6PD Analyzer (14,22±2,21 mg/dL) was higher than that measured by Hemocue HB301 System (13,45±1,63 mg/dL), with significant difference (p=0,001). The prevalence of anemia detected by SD Biosensor and Hemocue was 12,3% and 11,4%, respectively. The SD Biosensor Standard G6PD Analyzer demonstrated a sensitivity of 70,27%, specificity of 95,14%, PPV of 65%, NPV of 96,14% and an overall accuracy of 92,31%. Conclusion: The SD Biosensor Standard G6PD Analyzer exhibited relatively low sensitivity but high specificity compared to Hemocue HB301 System in measuring hemoglobin levels among children in malaria-endemic areas. Further research is needed to compare both devices against the gold-standard automated hematology analyzer and to identify the factors influencing measurement accuracy. Abstract

In children and adolescents, depressive symptoms often presenting as irritability, anhedonia, or behavioral changes. Despite significant advancements in survival rates due to improved therapeutic protocols, the psychological burden experienced by children with ALL.Objective: To evaluate the relationship between age and the presence of depressive symptoms in children diagnosed with ALL.Methods: A cross-sectional study was done using consecutive sampling with 40 children aged from 7 to 18 years old acquired, conducted from August to October 2024 at the outpatient unit of Adam Malik Hospital, Medan. Forty children aged 7–18 years with a confirmed diagnosis of ALL were included. Depressive symptoms were assessed using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9). Categorical variables were analyzed using the chi-square test, followed by bivariate to identify significant predictors of depression. Results: Among the 40 participants, the most age group were children ≤ 10 years old (65%). A statistically significant association was found between age group and the presence of depressive symptoms (p = 0.001, OR= 33,3). Conclusions: Age is significantly associated with the severity and presence of depressive symptoms in pediatric patients with ALL. Older children were more likely to report higher levels of depression. Psychological evaluation and targeted mental health support may be especially important in older age groups.
