Abstract

Air as one component of the environment is the most important requirement for maintaining life. Data at Depok III Community Health Centre showed that in 2013 the number of health problems due to air pollution in Caturtunggal Village was 342 cases. Behavior is a determining factor for the occurrence of family health problems. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between indoor air sanitation behaviors with the corresponding family health problems in the working area of the above community health centre. Method of the study was a cross sectional analytic survey with data collection instrument used was questionnaire guidance for interviewing the 210 households sample of the villagers. The data were analysed by using chi-squarestatitistical test and odds ratio at 95 % confidence level. It was found that the sanitation behavior related with risk factors for the unfulfillness condition of indoor temperature, gained a p-value of 0,112 and OR of 1,58. Meanwhile, for the other four conditions, the results were: humidity, p = 0,048 and OR = 1;771; illumination, p = 0,168 and OR = 1,533; ventilation rate, p = 0,026 and OR = 1,961, and dust, p = 0,037 and OR = 1,875. Therefore, it can be concluded that the risk factors behavior that are not significantly correlated with the corresponding family health problems are those of indoor temperature and illumination, and those that are significant are of indoor humidity, ventilation rate and dust.

Abstract

As the medium for life development and the place for family member to get on together spending most of their times, a house shoud be healthy and comfortable. Unhealthy house is closely related with the increase of ARI incidence, which is included in the top 10 diseases among the service area of Tegalrejo Community Health Centre. A preliminary survey held in Kelurahan Bener, showed that 39% houses were identified unhealthy, 53% less healthy, and only 8% were healthy. This study were aimed to determine the relationship between house physical environment condition and ARI incidence in that kelurahan by conducting a retrospective case-control study. Member of the case group were 30 new ARI cases sought for medication to the community healthcentre who were sampled randomly; meanwhile as the control group, 30 non-ARI close neighbors who have similar characteristics with each case were selected. The observation of the physical condition parameters, i.e. ventilation width, and indoor temperature, humidity and lighting, was using proper instruments and were averaged from three measurements. The results show that the parameters under study which have significant association with ARI incidence are: indoor humidity (OR: 3,82; 95% CI: 1,15-12,71; p-value: 0,024) and indoor lighting (OR: 4,00; 95% CI: 1,37-11,70; p-value: 0,009); meanwhile, those which are not related, are ventilation width (OR: 1,80; 95% CI: 0,39-8,32; p-value: 0,448) and indoor temperature (OR: 3,79; 95% CI: 0,75-10,33; p-value: 0,117).

Abstract

Pakuncen is one of the villages in Wirobrajan of Yogyakarta City with larva-free index below the national target, i.e. 87 %. This reflects high container index (CI) and lack of the awareness among housewives in conducting mosquito nest eradication. The research was aimed to know the effect of housewives participation in community self-survey to the frequency of the eradication and container index in that village by conducting a quasi experiment with non equivalent control group design. Subjects of the research were 52 housewives live in RT 28 and RT 29, of RW 6 in Kleben Hamlet, Pakuncen Village, who were then divided into two group, the experiment group and the control group. At the beginning of the study, all the housewives were provided with conseling. Later, treatment in the form of participation in community self survey was implemented in the experiment group, meanwhile in the control group it was not. The instruments used were questionnaire and larvae observation sheet. Data were analyzed with non parametric Kruskal-Wallis test at 0,05 level of significance, and the results showed that housewives participation in the community self-survey influenced the frequency of eradication activeties (p-value = 0,018). Nonetheless, the study could not prove statistically that the participation had significant effect to CI (p-value = 0,400) even though in the experiment group a decrease of CI was observed.

Abstract

Knowledge about environmental based diseases prevention, such as acute respiratory infection (ARI), should be given to high-risk groups, e.g. elementary school children. Counseling can achieve its maximum results if the media used is suitable with the target audience. For elementary school students, one of the appropriate media is those that will facilitate them in receiving the health messages given. One of those media is pictorial card named "smart card". The research is a quasi experiment with non-randomized control group pre-test post-test design. The study subjects consisted of 41 grade 4 and 5 students of Pingit Elementary School as the experiment group, and 41 grade 4 and 5 students of Karangrejo elemnetary school as the control group. Results of the statistical analysis using independent t-test at 95 % significance level, obtained a p-value of 0,015. It indicates that the difference in knowledge improvement between those two groups are significant. To conclude, the use of "smart card" in counseling activity influences students’ knowledge about ARI prevention, because the media supports the delivery of of the counseling messages to be received properly by the students.

Abstract

DHF is one of public health problems in Yogyakarta Province and is endemic in three out of the five regencies/city. One of control efforts undertake by health agencies is pesticide fogging, that employ several active ingredients, one of which is organophosphate, that can cause poisoning if mis-appropriately used. The study wanted to know the level of cholinesterase in blood as a sign of poisoning, by conducting an analytical cohort survey, towards 20 fogging personnels of Bantul Regency. Cholinesterase levels were measured by using tintometer kit and cholinesterase kit. Meanwhile, data which were related to study subjects were obtained primarily by direct observation and through secondary sources. Study results show that in recess, all personnels indicate normal cholinesterase level, but after do the fogging 20 % of them exhibit mild poisoning. It is also revealed that 50 % o the personnels are aged 41-50 years, 45 % had educationlevel of senior high school or bachelor degree, 75 % had long service period, 70 % rarely do the fogging, 85 % had good practice when do the fogging, and 55 % did not wear complete protecting devices. The data analysis using Spearman correlation test at 95 % level of significance concludes that factor which is significantly correlated with cholinesterase level is the frequency of fogging (p value = 0,027 and correlation coefficient = 0,494 or fair association). The other variables under study show no significant correlation, i.e. age (p value = 0,715), education level (p value = 0,462), service period (p value = 1,000), fogging practice (p value = 0,374), and completeness of protecting device (p value = 0,447).
