Abstract

The method of chemically cleaning dentures by immersion in an effervescent denture cleanser solution for a long time can affect the transverse strength. Betel leaf extract can be used as a natural disinfectant because it contains essential oils that are antimi-crobial by denaturing cell proteins. This study was intended to examine the decrease in the transverse strength of heat polymeri-rized acrylic resin plates after immersion in 15% betel leaf extract solution. The posttest only control group design study used a sample of 24 HPAR plates, which were divided into 6 groups. The plates were immersed in distilled water for 72 hours to re-duce the residual monomer, immersed in 15% betel leaf extract solution, the positive control group in Fittydent® and the nega-tive control group in aquadest for 1 and 6 hours. The transverse strength was tested using the Universal Testing Machine and the data were analyzed using the one-way Anova test. The results showed the average transverse strength after immersion for 1 hour in 15% betel leaf extract, Fittydent®, and aquadest, respectively, namely 46.512±10.965 MPa, 72.744±22.395 MPa, and 81.522±28.854 MPa; after soaking for 6 hours, respectively, namely 49.171±14.246 MPa, 73.894±25.844 MPa, and 71.860± 17.553 MPa. The LSD test showed that there was a significant difference in transverse strength (p<0.05). It was concluded that the immersion of the HPAR plate in 15% betel leaf extract solution for 1 hour and 6 hours decreased the transverse strength.

Abstract

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a condition characterized by kidney damage for > 3 months, as well as structural or functional abnormalities with or without a decrease in Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR) < 60 mL/minute/1.73. This damage leads to increased urea levels in the blood, also known as uremia, which can increase the risk of inflammation in CKD patients undergoing hemodialysis (HD). Previous studies revealed that increased urea and Neutrophil-Lymphocyte Ratio (NLR) can be used as inflammatory biomarkers to replace CRP, IL-6, and other indicators. This study aimed to determine the correlation between NLR and serum urea levels in pre- and post-HD CKD patients at Dr. Doris Sylvanus Hospital. An analytical survey method was used with a retrospective design. The process started by taking medical records of patients currently undergoing HD who were selected as respondents. The sample population consisted of 50 (70.4%) males and 21 (29.6%) females. Based on the age group, 43.7% of patients were aged 51-60. The results showed that the average NLR pre- and post-HD were 5.24±4.88 and 10.41±12.31, respectively. The average urea pre- and post-HD were 195.97±77.88 and 120.97±47.4, respectively. The bivariate analysis showed a significant weak correlation between NLR and serum urea level pre-HD (p=0.004 with r =0.338) and post-HD (p=0.039 with r =0.246) in patients.

Abstract

Concentration is centralization of the mind, motivation towards something with the addition of feeling worried, depressed, and panic so as not to hinder one's readiness. One of the factors that make it difficult to concentrate is the quality of sleep. Students can experience concentration problems, especially medical students because of the limited quality and quantity of sleep. Therefore, researchers are interested in conducting research on the relationship between sleep quality and concentration in preclinical students at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Palangka Raya. This study used an analytic observation method with a cross-sectional design. The research sample was 212 preclinical students in 2019, 2020 and 2021 who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Sampling technique with proportionate stratified random sampling. The instruments in this study were the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) questionnaire to assess sleep quality and the Stroop Test to assess concentration. This study showed that out of 212 samples, 55 people had good sleep quality and 157 had poor sleep quality. Only 39 people with good sleep quality had good concentration. There are 120 students with poor sleep quality but have good concentration. The results of the analysis showed with the Chi Square P Value test (0.416 > 0.05) that there was no significant relationship or relationship between sleep quality and concentration in preclinical students at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Palangka Raya.

Abstract

Cholesterol can be attacked by CCl4 by increasing lipid peroxidation, where CCl4 causes an increase in acetate transport into the liver, resulting in an increase in substrate (acetate) which causes cholesterol synthesis to also increase. Based on previous research, the kalakai plant (Stenochlaena palustris (Burm.F) Bedd) has good antioxidants to ward off free radicals. Objective: To determine the potential of kalakai leaf infusion to prevent the increase in total cholesterol levels induced by CCl4. Method: True experimental research with a post test only control group design, using 24 white male Wistar rats weighing 200-250 g, divided into three treatment groups and a negative (-) group induced by CCl4. Treatment groups I, II, II were given kalakai leaf infusion at a dose of 300 mg/kgBW, 400 mg/kgBW, 500 mg/kgBW. This research was conducted for 15 days. Research Results: In the normality and homogeneity test, the sig>0.05 value was obtained, so it can be concluded that the data is normally and homogeneously distributed. Then the data can be continued for Oneway ANOVA hypothesis testing, and a value of sig>0.05 is obtained. Based on the research results, there was no effect from the kalakai leaf infusion and the hypothesis was rejected.

Abstract

Peptic ulcer disease is a gastrointestinal disorder associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Enhancing the quality of life of patients with peptic ulcers often involves integrating conventional treatments with complementary alternative therapies. One such alternative therapy is herbal remedies, which local communities have long recognized. Sungkai leaves (Peronema canescens Jack) contain various bioactive components, including flavonoids, alkaloids, saponins, tannins, steroids, and phenolic compounds. This study aimed to assess the gastroprotective properties of sungkai leaf extract (Peronema canescens Jack) by analyzing the average size of gastric lesions in male Wistar rats exposed to absolute ethanol. The research used a true experimental design with a posttest-only control group approach involving six treatment groups, each consisting of four rats. Gastroprotective activity was macroscopically evaluated by measuring the average size of the gastric lesions. Statistical analyses were conducted using the Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests for post hoc comparisons. Results showed that the normal group had an average lesion size of 0 mm, the negative control group had 115.37±50.53 mm, and the positive control group had 7.40±2.57 mm. For the groups treated with sungkai leaf extract, the 100 mg/kgBW dose resulted in 6.86±3.83 mm lesions, the 200 mg/kgBW dose in 9.65±10.27 mm, and the 400 mg/kgBW dose in 29.50±19.68 mm. Statistical analysis using SPSS 26 revealed a significant difference between the groups, with a Kruskal-Wallis test result of p=0.002. These findings show that sungkai leaf extract exhibits gastroprotective activity compared with omeprazole, as seen by the smaller average size of gastric lesions in male Wistar rats treated with absolute ethanol.
