Abstract

Burns are a health problem that is often faced in Indonesia with a high incidence rate. One approach that has been taken in treating burns is using natural medicines. The red betel plant (Piper crocatum) has the potential as an anti-inflammatory and wound-healing agent. Transdermal patch preparations are an alternative form of drug dosage with various advantages. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of red betel leaf extract patches in healing second-degree burns in vivo. Patch preparations were made with several different formulations, and evaluations were carried out on the patch preparations. The treatment groups were carried out on male white rats of the Wistar strain, which were divided into four groups of red betel leaf extract patch formulations. Treatment was carried out for 14 days. Several parameters to assess effectiveness for healing second-degree burns include moisture, color, and scab. The results of the LSD posthoc test showed that there was a difference in the mean between treatment groups with significant healing of burn wounds in mice (p-value < 0.05). The F4 red betel leaf extract group (30%) showed the highest healing value of 50.37%. Red betel leaf extract (Piper crocatum) is effective in healing second-degree burns in vivo.

Abstract

Hemoglobin is an important component of the human body. It aims to transport oxygen and carbon dioxide. Anemia during pregnancy often occurs in the second trimester. Pregnant women tend to be vulnerable to malnutrition since their nutritional needs will increase to satisfy the needs of both the mother and the fetus. Protein intake plays a crucial role in the transportation of iron in the body. Meanwhile, vitamin C serves as a promoter of iron absorption. This research aims to determine and analyze the correlation between protein, iron, and vitamin C intake and hemoglobin levels in pregnant women at Kayon Public Health Center, Jekan Raya District. This research used an analytic observational method with a cross-sectional approach and a purposive sampling technique. Bivariate analysis was also applied by using the Spearman test. The latter results obtain a p-value of 0.748 between protein intake and hemoglobin level; a p-value of 0.222 between vitamin C intake and hemoglobin level; and a p-value of 0.050 between iron intake and hemoglobin level. There was a correlation between iron intake and hemoglobin level, yet there was no correlation between protein and vitamin C intake with hemoglobin level.

Abstract

The Dayak tribe, residing on the island of Borneo in Indonesia, continues to uphold their ancestral cultural customs involving using medicinal plants for disease treatment. To assess the efficacy of chosen Dayak traditional medicinal plants, commonly utilized for treating diverse infectious ailments, against bacteria responsible for infections. Samples of medicinal plants (Garptophyllum pictum, Eleutherine bulbosa, Oscimum sanctum, Cassia alata, Callicarpa longifolia Lam., Hibiscus rosa-sinensis, Dracaena cantleyi, Uncaria gambir Roxb., Rhodomyrtus tomentosa, Gomphrena globose) were extracted using absolute methanol and water and tested for their antimicrobial activities against stock isolates and standard strains of Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pyogenes, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Enterobacter aerogenes using agar well diffusion and micro titer plate methods. Crude extracts of Eleutherine bulbosa, Dracaena cantleyi, Oscimum sanctum, and Uncaria gambir Roxb. inhibited bacterial growth by 100%, 100%, 40%, and 25% against the test organisms, respectively. These plants inhibited the growth of bacteria from 7 mm to 16 mm in diameter. Most of the plant extracts had antibacterial activities, among which Eleutherine bulbosa and Dracaena cantleyi inhibited the growth of 100% of the test organisms, respectively. The activities of methanolic extracts were greater than those of their corresponding water extracts. Streptococcus pyogens was the organism most susceptible to the extract, while Enterobacter aerogenes demonstrated the highest resistance.

Abstract

Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) is an infection triggered by bacteria, viruses, protozoa, parasites and fungi which is transmitted mainly through sexual contact, including anal and oral. Apart from that, STIs can also be transmitted through direct contact with contaminated objects, for example towels, sex toys, syringes, thermometers, and also through pregnant women to their fetuses or during the birth stage. One age group that is vulnerable to STIs is teenagers. Teenagers are more often encouraged to explore sexual experiences, which can increase the risk of experiencing STIs. One of the problems of teenagers at SMAN 4 Palangka Raya based on the results of interviews with students related to STI cases is the low level of knowledge about STIs. This service activity aims to increase teenagers' knowledge about STIs and spread this knowledge to the surrounding environment. The method used is a lecture containing material about the definition and meaning of STIs, the causes of STIs, symptoms caused by STI-causing agents in both men and women, how STIs are transmitted and how to prevent them. Service activities begin with socialization, implementation and evaluation of results. The implementation of Community Service activities in the form of efforts to increase knowledge about sexually transmitted infections in adolescents at SMAN 4 Palangka Raya was successful, participants enthusiastically listened to the material presented. There was a significant increase in knowledge after counseling compared to the pretest. Counseling can increase students' knowledge about the types of STIs and their complications.
