Abstract

Excessive fat accumulation in the body causes an increase in Body Mass Index (BMI). Increased BMI and comorbidities affect the metabolic rate. Metabolic age was influenced by the individual metabolic rate. The purpose of this study was to determine the description of metabolic age to BMI increasement. This cross-sectional study used a purposive sampling method to obtain 82 male and female subjects. Subjects were measured for BMI and metabolic age. Collected data was analyzed univariately and bivariate correlatively. The result showed a significant correlation between metabolic age and BMI (p = 0,001) with r = 0,812. The conclusion of this study is the increase in BMI, the higher the metabolic age.

Abstract

The incidence of urolithiasis tends to relapse, causing increased mortality and medical costs. In 2015, there were 22.1 million cases of urolithiasis which caused death in about 16,000 people. Obesity is a risk factor that can increase the incidence of urolithiasis. However, there are differences in the results of studies regarding the relationship between obesity and urolithiasis. This literature review aims to analyze the factors that influence the relationship between obesity and urolithiasis. This literature review study uses a systematic review design. The data source used in this literature review is secondary data in scientific journals that have met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Based on data synthesis from the fifteen journals studied, twelve journals stated a relationship between obesity and the incidence of urolithiasis. In contrast, the other three stated that there was no relationship between obesity and the incidence of urolithiasis. Obesity is associated with a spectrum of metabolic disorders that lead to increased excretion of urinary lithogenic factors. In addition, obesity can increase urolithiasis in types of calcium oxalate and uric acid stones.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a metabolic disease that global concern and characterized by hyperglycemia. Tests for antidiabetic agents, either discovering new drugs or antidiabetic components, have been developed using experimental animals induced with the diabetogenic agent streptozotocin. The side effects of streptozotocin were reported lower than alloxan. The sensitivity of streptozotocin induction can be relied on by several factors such as sex and hormones—the difference in results in several studies regarding the relationship between streptozotocin induction sensitivity with gender. The research method is a literature review using a systematic approach. Articles are collected through search engines like NCBI, Google Scholar, and ResearchGate by entering keywords. Based on the results of data synthesis on the relationship between streptozotocin induction sensitivity and the sex of the experimental animal, it was found that fifteen articles were related and three articles were not. Sex has a relationship with streptozotocin induction's sensitivity through the hormones estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone.

Abstract

Excessive fat accumulation in the obese body causes chronic low-grade inflammation. The continuous occurrence will affect health, which may lead to damage to cell metabolism related to metabolic age. Therefore, anthropometric application by measuring neck circumference (NC) and body mass index (BMI) was performed. The aim of this study was to determine NC cut-off which can be used to identify the increase of metabolic age in an individual. This study is a diagnostic study using cross sectional design using subjects who met the criteria needed for this study (n = 82). BMI and NC anthropometric measurements were performed in this study. Metabolic age was measured using Bioelectrical Impedance Analyzer (BIA). Data were analyzed using 2 x 2 diagnostic table and Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve to obtain Area Under Curve (AUC). The results showed that the highest BMI was obese (65.8%) with the most common age of 30-57 years old. The result of ROC-AUC NC on metabolic age showed that AUC value of NC measurement was 0.77, cut-off ≥ 33 cm, sensitivity 71.2%, and specificity 69.6%. This study concludes that the cut-off value of NC in predicting the increase of metabolic age had good sensitivity and specificity.

Abstract

Hyperglycemia that occurs in diabetic Mellitus leads to glycation reactions in protein molecules and oxidative stress resulting in damage to cells and organs. Swiftlet’s nest believed society could lower blood glucose. The objective of the study was to evaluate the effect of Swiftlet’s nest (Collocalia fuciphago) extract on glucose level, Malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, and Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) activity in blood serum. The study used Posttest-Only with Control Group Design, consisting of 1 control group (given aqua dest) and 3 treatment groups (dose 1; 10 and 100 mg/kg BW). Each group consisted of 6 Rattus norvegicius. Before being treated, Streptozotocin-induced rat at a dose of 68 mg/kg BW intraperitoneal. On the 7th day after induction, rats had elevated glucose ± 102 - 108 mg/dL. Then the rats were given water extract Swiftlet’s nest for 28 days orally. All data were analyzed by the Kruskal-Wallis test, followed by the Mann-Whitney test, with a 95% confidence level. The results of blood glucose levels in each group (K, P1, P2 and P3) were 111.0 vs 88.5 vs 86 vs 83 mg / dL (p = 0.035), MDA levels experienced an increase in the treatment group compared to controls namely 193.50 vs 193.83 vs. 198.50 nmol / mL, p = 0.001. While the SOD enzyme activity has increased, namely 0.0050 vs. 0.0075 vs. 0.0263%. In conclusion, Swiftlet’s nest water extract can reduce blood glucose levels and increase MDA levels and SOD enzyme activity in blood serum.

Abstract

Peptic ulcers are one of the global health problems in the world. However, most of these drugs have unwanted side effects and drug interactions that this research focuses on the use of plant products as an anti gastric ulcer. The phytochemical of Passiflora foetida L. leaves or better known by the name of the Central Borneo with 'Cemot' such as flavonoids, alkaloids, and tannin has potential as a gastroprotective. This study used the method of extraction of non-conventional, namely the UAE, because it has advantages compared with other conventional methods. This study aims to investigate the gastroprotective activities of ethanol extract of Passiflora foetida leaves-UAE. Cemot extract was obtained by UAE method using a concentration of ethanol (70%), the ratio of sample/liquid (10g/mL) for 3 minutes. Three groups of rats treated with a respective dose of the extract (50, 100 and 200 mg/kg BW), one group of rats treated with omeprazole 36 mg/kg BW for seven days before peptic ulcer induction using ethanol. The activity gastroprotective with measurement of lesion of gastric ulcer index and the percentage of inhibition ulcer. Group of rats treated with 200 mg/kg BW extract showed a decreased the ulcer index and ulcer inhibition than the other extract dosage groups, respectively 2.83 and 35.34%. Conclusion: Based on the results of this study concluded that the cemot extract has potential as a gastroprotective.

Abstract

Data based on the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2018 shows that 650 million people in the world suffer from obesity. Indonesia is a country that ranks 4th in Southeast Asia with 14.3% of obesity cases. One of the factors that causes the increase in obesity is the consumption of junk food. However, there are differences in research results regarding the effect of junk food consumption on obesity in terms of the frequency of junk food consumption. The purpose of this literature review is to determine the effect of the frequency of consumption of junk food on obesity when studied scientifically. This literature review research uses a systematic review approach. Sources of research data using secondary data include scientific journals that meet the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Based on the synthesis of data from 15 journals studied, there are 13 journals which state that consumption of junk food has an effect on obesity, and 2 journals which state that it does not have an effect of consumption of junk food on obesity. Most obese patients have leptin resistance, which will make leptin levels high so that it does not cause a decrease in appetite.
