Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Salak or snake fruit cultivar madu is a supreme salak which has a higher economic value than prime of salak pondoh. The skin of the fruit is thin, bigger shell, and more juicy flesh, making the pell dry out easily and the flesh of the fruit rot due to transpiration and fungi. The coating of aloe vera combined with beeswax is expected to maintain the quality of salak during the distribution. The aim of this research was study of the coating application made from aloe vera-beeswax on honey salak was. The concentration of aloe vera was 30% and beeswax was 3%. The coating was done by dipping method in the form of emulsion (composite) and bilayer. Bilayer application was done by dipping salak in the aloe vera solution, after being dry, dipping it again in the beeswax solution. Storage was carried out at room temperature without packaging. This study used a completely randomized design with no coating as a control. Aloe vera 30% combined with 3% beeswax was able to maintain the quality of salak at room temperature up to 8 days with a level of damage 32.38 % - 34.29% while control (without coating) reaching 55.24% and no drying of the fruit peels. Application of coating in the form of an emulsion gives better results and is significantly different in weight loss and skin discolouration so it is advisable to use an emulsion. Keywords: bilayer, dipping, emultion, room temperature.

Abstract

Abstract

Performance of soybean growth and development is influenced by environmental conditions. On similar soil fertility conditions but different environmental conditions such as rainfall will also lead the changes in the performance of the plant. The research aimed to study the agronomic performance of the potential soybean lines in two different drought acid land agroecologies. The experiment was conducted at the South Lampung Tegineneng experimental station and East Lampung Taman Bogo experimental station from February until May 2013. The South Lampung Tegineneng experimental station has a pH of 5.50 and an average rainfall of 89 mm per month, and The East Lampung Taman Bogo experimental station has a pH of 5.12 and an average rainfall of 213 mm per month. The experiment consisted of 10 soybean lines adapted acid land and two check varieties. The experiment was arranged in randomized completely block design with four replications. The least significant different test (LSD) at α = 0.05 was used to calculate significant differences among all treatments. The results showed that rainfall influenced agronomic performance of soybean more than soil acidity. The yield performance in South Lampung was lower than in the East Lampung. Four genotypes produced higher grain yield than the Tanggamus variety in both locations, i.e. Tgm/Anj-862, Tgm/Anj-784, Tgm/Anj-888 Tgm/Anj-857, and Tgm/Anj-858. Tgm/Anj-862 was the most superior genotypes for having the highest number of branches, number of pods, and 100-seeds weight and seed yield and consistent at both locations. The four genotypes, especially Tgm/Anj-862, were potential to be developed in both locations or other locations with similar environmental conditions. Keywords: grain yield, ultisol, yield components

Abstract

Kombucha is a functional beverage produced by fermenting tea with a symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast (SCOBY).  It is known for its various health benefits but is limited by its short shelf-life. To improve its stability, kombucha can be converted into powder using the foam-mat drying method, the effectiveness of which depends strongly on the formulation of foaming and filling agents. This study aimed to determine the optimal formulation of foaming and filling agents in kombucha. This study evaluated four formulations combining maltodextrin (15% and 20%), Tween-80 (0.25–1%), egg albumen (0–5%), and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC; 0.3%). The formulation of 500 g kombucha with 15% maltodextrin, 0.3% CMC, 0.5% Tween-80,  and 5% egg albumen produced the best results, yielding 14.38% powder with 5.78% moisture, a hue value of 1.32, chroma of 14.80,  and whiteness index of 81.84. These findings indicate that the selected formulation is effective in producing kombucha powder with desirable physical properties.

Abstract

The quality of national vanilla still does not fully meet national and international standards, one reason is the suboptimal conditioning process, namely, the final storage stage to stabilize quality. This study aims to examine the effect of packaging type, combined with temperature and conditioning duration, on vanilla's physical, chemical, sensory, and microbiological quality, and determine the best treatment combination in producing vanilla quality that meets SNI. Factorial Completely Randomized Design (CRD) was used in this experiment with three factors namely different material packaging (wax paper and HDPE plastic), various temperatures storage (25 °C, 30 °C, 35 °C), and conditioning durations (1, 1.5, and 2 months). Results showed that temperature, type of packaging, and conditioning duration significantly affect most of the physical, chemical, and microbiological quality parameters of vanilla, except for ash content and organoleptic aroma, which are not significantly different. The best treatment combination was obtained using HDPE packaging with a temperature of 35 °C for 1.5 months of conditioning, producing quality according to SNI 01-0010-2002 with high vanillin content and stable color. However, the total microbial count (TPC) in this treatment still exceeded the limits set by FAO.

Abstract

The determination of robusta coffee roast levels is commonly conducted through visual assessment, which is inherently subjective and prone to inconsistency due to overlapping visual characteristics between adjacent roasting stages. On the other side, objective measurement equipment is often costly and not easily accessible. This study addresses this problem by proposing a digital image–based classification method for five robusta coffee roast levels (green, light, medium, medium-dark, and dark). Parameters included color feature extraction from RGB (Red, Green, Blue), HSV (Hue, Saturation, Value), and shape features including area, perimeter, and circularity are extracted from captured images. A hybrid Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) and K-Nearest Neighbor (KNN) classifier with Manhattan distance is employed to enhance class separability and improve classification accuracy. Model performance was evaluated using a confusion matrix (precision, accuracy, recall and F-1 score). Results showed that by integrating multiple visual features and employing a hybrid classification strategy, the proposed approach was able to improve the classification of Robusta coffee roasting levels. The evaluation using a 90:10 data split with an optimal k = 16 resulted in the highest accuracy of 83%.
