Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

The increasing generation of biomass waste from coconut and palm oil industries presents both environmental challenges and opportunities for renewable energy utilization. This study evaluates the potential of cocopeat, empty fruit bunch (EFB), and palm kernel shell (PKS) as alternative fuels in boiler applications through fuel characterization, blending analysis, and thermochemical performance modeling. This research aims and objective to characterize the three wastes, determine the best composition mixture as boiler fuel, and estimate the potential exhaust gas emissions. This research uses laboratory testing methods, calculation of calorific value, and estimation of exhaust gas emissions (CO₂, SO₂, NO₂) using stoichiometric calculations and steam production modeling based on energy balance principles. The test was carried out by comparing cocopeat pellets (PECO); a mixture of 50% cocopeat and 50% EFB (BCO); PKS; and EFB. The results showed that 10% PECO, 30% EFB, 60% PKS has a high calorific value of 17.05 MJ/kg. Furthermore, NO2 emissions and steam production rate are decreased to 3.42% and 7.93% than 20% PECO, 40% EFB, 40% PKS. This is due to the high value of the coconut shell fraction (PKS), which produces a high calorific value. Furthermore, the cocopeat mixture, consisting of 10%BCO, 30%EFB, and 60%PKS, has low NO2 emissions and can produce high steam in boilers. This indicates that cocopeat can be used as a new fuel when mixed with EFB, thereby maximizing the utilization of coconut waste and reducing environmental impact.

Abstract

Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) is a widely used population-based optimization method but faces challenges in premature convergence, leading to suboptimal solutions. To address this issue, this study proposes a Tanh-Based Acceleration Coefficient PSO (TB-PSO), where the acceleration coefficients are modified using the hyperbolic tangent (tanh) function. The smooth and continuous behavior of tanh enables gradual coefficient updates, limits excessive particle velocities, and maintains swarm diversity, thereby improving convergence stability and balancing exploration and exploitation. The convergence theorem analysis confirms that TB-PSO meets stability criteria before being evaluated on unimodal and multimodal benchmark functions in 10 and 30 dimensions. Its performance is compared against several PSO variants, including TVAC-PSO, SCAC-PSO, NDAC-PSO, and SAC-PSO. In the 10-dimensional experiments, TB-PSO achieves the best overall final ranking based on the average and standard deviation of best solution, ranking first for functions f₃ and f₅, second for f₂ with only a marginal difference from the best-performing method, and remaining competitive for f₁ and f₄. These results indicate superior solution quality and stable convergence. For the 30-dimensional benchmark functions, TB-PSO ranks first for f₂, second for f₅, and third for f₁, f₃, and f₄ based on the same evaluation criteria. Although its ranking decreases compared to the 10-dimensional case, TB-PSO remains competitive, reflecting the increased complexity of high-dimensional optimization problems. Overall, the results demonstrate that the tanh-based acceleration coefficient modification effectively enhances PSO performance, particularly in lower-dimensional search spaces, while maintaining robustness in higher-dimensional scenarios.

Abstract

This study presents the design and development of an IoT-based nozzle actuator system intended to improve the accuracy and efficiency of automatic fish-feed distribution. The system was designed using an ESP32 microcontroller as the central controller, a servo motor as the nozzle-direction actuator, and the Blynk application as the remote monitoring and control interface. This configuration enables users to adjust the nozzle’s direction and feed-dispersion intensity through both manual control and scheduled timer modes. A series of experiments was conducted to evaluate mechanical performance, IoT connectivity stability, response time, and cross-device application compatibility. The experimental results indicate that the proposed system improves feed-distribution efficiency by 32.6% compared to conventional manual methods. Feed waste was reduced by 28.4% due to more uniform distribution and minimized overfeeding. The average command-to-actuator response time was measured at 0.82 seconds, demonstrating stable real-time performance. Application testing across five smartphone devices (Redmi 12, Huawei P30, Redmi Note 9, Samsung M23, and Little M3) achieved a 100% success rate for login, timer functions, and manual ON commands, confirming the reliability of the IoT control interface across multiple platforms. Compared with traditional automatic feeders, the developed prototype offers more precise nozzle orientation, flexible remote operation, and an adaptive feed-dispersion pattern. The integration of actuation mechanisms with IoT-based control provides a smarter and more efficient automation solution suitable for small- to medium-scale aquaculture systems. Overall, the findings demonstrate that the proposed design delivers superior distribution performance and operational flexibility, representing a meaningful advancement over existing feeding technologies.
