Abstract

Censorship, a tool of cultural hegemony often employed by colonizers, was practiced by the Dutch colonials in the Dutch East Indies through the people's reading commission or Balai Pustaka, as evidenced in the Nota Rinkes, which prohibited literary works with subversive political content, religious sentiments, and immoral themes. This study explores the content of the novel Sitti Nurbaya, a prominent publication from Balai Pustaka, using a postcolonial approach and Gramsci's theory of cultural hegemony as analytical tools. The findings reveal that Sitti Nurbaya contains elements of progressive politics through the Belasting riots, intense religious sentiment in defense of Adat teachings, and characters with flawed morals. Consequently, it is concluded that Sitti Nurbaya managed to circumvent Balai Pustaka's censorship and functioned as an organic intellectual, sparking anti-colonial awareness.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

The novel Moga Bunda Disayang Allah by Tere Liye portrays the inner struggle of a human being facing life’s conflicts through the main character, Karang, who experiences traumatic events and intense emotions. This study aimed to classify the emotions of the main character as reflected in Karang’s characterization in the novel, based on David Krech’s literary psychology perspective. A descriptive–analytical method was employed, grounded in David Krech’s emotional classification within literary psychology. The research data consisted of words, phrases, clauses, and sentences containing emotional aspects of Karang, drawn from the fifth edition (February 2024) of Moga Bunda Disayang Allah. Data were collected through intensive reading and note-taking, while data validity was ensured using triangulation techniques. The findings show that Karang experiences seven primary types of emotions: guilt, repressed guilt, self-punishment, shame, sadness, hatred, and love. Guilt emerges as the most dominant emotion, shaping his initial characterization as stubborn, egocentric, and indifferent. Through Karang’s interactions with Melati and the family of Tuan HK, the emotion of love develops and drives his personality transformation into a more caring, affectionate, and considerate figure. Thus, the dynamics of Karang’s emotions represent an inner transformation process from suffering toward acceptance and emotional recovery, while simultaneously affirming the humanistic message conveyed by the author and enriching literary psychology studies on the representation of emotion in fiction.

Abstract

This study explores the academic literacy challenges faced by night class students in English Language Education who also work full-time. Using a qualitative narrative inquiry approach, five students from Universitas PGRI Adi Buana Surabaya shared their experiences navigating English academic reading and writing under the pressure of limited time, cognitive fatigue, and minimal institutional support. The findings reveal that these learners often struggle to comprehend complex texts and structure academic writing, not due to a lack of motivation, but because of structural and emotional constraints. Many rely on coping strategies such as digital tools or peer support, though these are often insufficient for deep learning. The study highlights that current academic systems are not fully responsive to the realities of non-traditional learners. It recommends inclusive literacy support such as flexible feedback mechanisms, evening-based writing clinics, and integrated instruction. This research calls for a shift toward more equitable and empathetic approaches in English language education

Abstract

Local beliefs in the myths surrounding Lake Kuranding are relevant to the lake's existence. This study aims to uncover the ecological values embedded in the Lake Kuranding folktale and their implications for environmental sustainability. This study uses an ecocritical approach, focusing on the social phenomena of the Tanjung Beringin Village community, South Bengkulu, regarding the ecological implications of the Lake Kuranding folktale. The ecological dimension of local narratives tends to be underexplored, even though these narratives are related to the construction of awareness in environmental preservation. This research is a major step towards understanding how the local narrative of the Lake Kuranding folktale represents environmental preservation. Data sources come from literature, interviews, and observations. The results indicate that the Lake Kuranding folktale contains ecological values, namely: (1) self-sufficiency and self-awareness, (2) knowledge of land allocation, and (3) preservation of water and soil sources. The implications of these three ecological values provide numerous benefits, such as the preservation of the lake ecosystem and water sources for two sub-districts in South Bengkulu, an abundance of fish resources, and a foundation for food security for the people of South Bengkulu. The mythical aspects of the Kuranding Lake folklore have transformed into ecological values that guide the community in preserving their natural environment. The existence of the Kuranding Lake folklore today is not only relevant to the oral folklore preservation practices of the Serawai ethnic group in South Bengkulu but also has implications for the lake's sustainability and plays a significant role in the social and economic aspects of the community in South Bengkulu.

Abstract

This study is motivated by the need for a more in-depth examination of the changes that occur in the process of adapting literary works into film, with a specific focus on the adaptation of the novel A: Aku, Benci dan Cinta by Wulanfadi (print edition 2015) into the film A: Aku, Benci dan Cinta directed by Rizki Balki (released 2017). The study aims to analyze the forms of change from novel to film using ecranisation theory, which comprises three main aspects—reduction, addition, and varied modification—applied to the elements of plot, character and characterization, and setting. A qualitative descriptive method was employed, with data consisting of textual sequences obtained through close reading of the novel and detailed observation of the film as the objects of analysis. The findings show that, for the reduction aspect, 74 instances were identified in the plot, 17 in characters and characterization, and 4 in setting; for the addition aspect, 13 instances were found in the plot, 5 in characters and characterization, and 2 in setting; and for the varied modification aspect, 21 instances were identified in the plot, 10 in characters and characterization, and 4 in setting. These results indicate that the ecranisation of A: Aku, Benci dan Cinta into film involves a fairly intensive strategy of reduction, addition, and variation, particularly in the plot element, thereby producing a narrative structure that is more compact and aligned with the demands of the cinematic medium. This study contributes to the growing body of research on ecranisation and provides an empirical basis for comparative analyses between literary works and their film adaptations.
