Beauty is defined through the process of social interaction and the use of symbols. Social interaction could define distinct meaning about reality. Youths in Waingapu, East Timor, interact within cultural context that is filled with values passed from generation to generation, and that includes how to define the meaning of beauty. As youths who live in an era of fast development of conventional and social media, youths are interacting with both cultural and social – constructed by media – values. This research aims to describe how the meaning of beauty is defined in Waingapu. To accomplish its objective, the research uses descriptive qualitative approach by conducting interview with ten youths from Waingapu. The result shows that youths in Waingapu define meaning of beauty from two opposite sides. They are facing a dissonance in which two values are going to two different directions. They however realize that the meaning of beauty is mainly defined by character – in accordance with the culture of people in Sumba – but they are unable to set aside the ideas that are constructed by media on the definition of beauty.

Abstract Globalization changes the nature of media and information dissemination, where media plays an important part in enhancing peace. But on the other hand, media is not only a tool to promote harmony but conflict as well. However, peacebuilding depends largely on media literacy. Media literacy offers people potentialities to promote peace, especially at young ages. Therefore, this program aims to help students improve their media literacy competence, specifically regarding how to use media wisely. This program also collaborates with Jawara Internet Sehat to promote the internet for positive use to 100 Wijaya Kusuma School students. The implementations of this program are divided into 3 stages, preparation, delivery, and evaluation. The preparation stage focused on analyzing the problems faced by Sekolah Wijaya Kusuma to help us build suitable training modules. Then in the delivery stage, we conduct training through seminars and workshops that focus on using media wisely and avoiding hoaxes. And lastly, we evaluate the feedback given by the students and the result shows that this program helps the student to improve their media literacy and promote peacebuilding through media.

Indonesian women’s lives had been challenging at times, leaving little room for them to work. Numerous reasons contribute to these restrictions. One of the influencing elements is that men in Indonesia are given more flexibility to participate in the wider context of society, including being the primary source of producing revenue, but women in Indonesia are forced to play a role as someone who is responsible for household duties. The deeply ingrained patriarchal culture in Indonesia is to blame for this. Women in East Nusa Tenggara are also affected by this social issue, particularly those who reside on Solor Island in East Flores. Due to the poor and inconsistent quality of education, women who live there frequently receive social evaluations from other Indonesians and are stereotyped as being unintelligent, leading to the belief that women can only rely on men. However, there are other things that can be seen on the Instagram account @duAnyam, where women have the chance to become empowered in the production of woven goods, giving them the same opportunities as men who can establish economic and financial independence. Based on this social phenomenon, it is intriguing to do this research in order to understand what independent women lies @duAnyam on Instagram imply. To describe how women perceive their function as independent, typically tied to males, this study will employ qualitative methods and a phenomenological approach. The findings reflect what women mean in terms of their varying perceptions of the intrinsic independence that they possess.

The low level of community participation in development activities has driven the Pamalar congregation of the Christian Church of Sumba (GKS) in Central Sumba Regency to play an active role in mobilizing local residents. As a regency with a predominantly Christian population, the church holds a central and strategic position in the community. GKS Pamalar is required to establish strong relationships with the community and adapt to cultural identities to develop approaches based on local wisdom that can encourage community participation in development initiatives. This study aims to analyze the strategies implemented by GKS Pamalar to foster community participation in development activities. To examine this issue, the study employs several key concepts, including strategy, local wisdom, participation, and community development. A qualitative approach with a case study method is used to explore how GKS Pamalar carries out its strategies to build community participation in the development process. The findings indicate that community development programs must be oriented towards the interests and needs of the local population. The success of these programs is also attributed to the active role of the church and its leaders in creating programs related to the main sources of community livelihoods. Furthermore, church leaders often serve as a bridge between the village government and the people of Pamalar. The compatibility of the church leaders’ leadership style in this study is also reflected in their strategies of engagement, recognizing, and directly encouraging participation, which builds a sense of trust — a crucial social capital for driving community development. This study examines the representation of Indonesian women in the film Home Sweet Loan (2024) using Roland Barthes’ semiotics to analyze meaning production at the levels of denotation, connotation, and myth. The findings reveal that the film constructs female selflessness through three narrative themes: (1) the responsibilities of daughters within the family, (2) the negotiation between modern womanhood and selflessness, and (3) the positive incentives given to women who sacrifice their personal aspirations. Although the character Kaluna is portrayed as an urban woman with the agency to express discomfort and negotiate her boundaries, the narrative ultimately directs her toward prioritizing family needs, reaffirming the myth of the ideal Indonesian woman within a patriarchal cultural framework. At the same time, the presence of a female director introduces an emotional framing that opens a reflective space regarding gendered burdens experienced by women. This study is limited to a single film and descriptive semiotic analysis without incorporating audience perspectives. Future research should explore audience reception or conduct comparative studies across multiple films to deepen the understanding of gender ideology in Indonesian cinema.
