Abstract

This paper discusses the importance of both teachers’ and students’ acceptance about the fact that errors are important part of learning process. It is through students’ errors, teacher can observe what students are trying to posses, what notions students have misunderstood and what additional work they might need. For that reason, errors are often seen as a sign of learning in language acquisition process. On the other hand, teachers’ habits in responding students’ spoken errors are varied, showing different reactions they hold towards student’s spoken errors. Some teachers tend to correct all the errors while some tend to be tolerant, and still some others do not correct at all. Corrective feedbacks are provided by the teacher in responding student’s errors. From the language teacher’s point of view, the provision of feedback is a major means to inform learners of the accuracy of both their target language production. Unfortunately, sometimes, feedback as a part of teacherlearner interaction in the class is assumed as a barrier in doing a communication. This paper calls the attention to the importance of applying the appropriate corrective feedbacks toward students’ spoken errors and the impacts of that error correction behavior toward students’ uptake. Keywords: Corrective feedbacks, categories of errors, students’ uptake.

YouTube can be a preferable media for effective and engaging English learning. This survey research was conducted to investigate the students’ perceptions on the use of YouTube to learn English post-pandemic. The participants were 88 second-grade students in one of the public junior high schools in Batu. The data were taken by administering the questionnaire directly to the students. The findings revealed that YouTube was effective, attractive, and motivating to help the students learn English post-pandemic in the classroom. Abstract

Tourism is one of the largest and fastest growing economic sectors in the world and has a considerable role to play in delivering sustainable development in many countries. Over the last fifty years, tourism has become one of the largest economic sectors globally, accounting for some 9% of the world’s GDP and over 200 million jobs. Tourist movements towards developing and least developed countries are growing faster than in the developed world, accounting now for almost 50% of total international tourist arrivals. Many developing countries do have assets of enormous value to the tourism sector, such as culture, art, landscape, wildlife, and climate. They are very well positioned to develop tourism as a key sector contributing to economic growth. The development of tourism in Indonesia has given significant contribution toward national economic growth. These dynamics have turned tourism into a key driver for socio-‎economic progress. Tourism is one of the many external forces influencing the direction and options for local sustainable development. One of the interesting phenomena is focusing on the concept of Local Tourism Village: a village exploring the local tourism potentials and culture in Kota Wisata Batu (KWB), East Java, Indonesia. This research offers a design or model of Local Tourism Village which is equipped with the awareness of tourism and also language to enrich local human resources. This is in line with sustainable development to simultaneously achieve three objectives, namely: (1) to increase local social welfare; (2) to get greater and more equitably distributed local economic wealth; and (3) to enhance the integrity of local ecosystems (UN Conference on Environment and Development). The design is based on the analysis of local tourism potentials, the analysis of human resources to promote tourisms, and the need survey of English as an international language to support tourism promotions. This model requires the joint of local government, society, and education practitioners to establish autonomous learning condition. The model works on giving training on English for Tourisms presented on a module and practiced in series of tourism activities. Keywords: Local tourism village, Sustainable development, English for Tourisms, Kota Wisata Batu

Abstract

The effect of corrective feedback can result in various negative to positive effects on the student’s motivation in speaking skills. Corrective feedback has been used to correct the students’ mistakes. This research aims to explore the use of corrective feedback to the student’s motivation in learning speaking skills. It was conducted through an online platform for higher-level students at Brawijaya University. The respondents are 56 students who claimed to have experience in receiving corrective feedback as well as having knowledge of corrective feedback. The researcher used a Quantitative-Descriptive method by collecting data using questionaries. Using quantitative methods, this study employed close-ended questions. As a result, numerical data was expected to be analyzed for the source of the research data. The results showed that although corrective feedback can be seen as a way that can improve students’ academic skills, it is proven that it can be a negative aspect in improving students’ motivation in speaking skills. This research is expected to bring out an awareness about giving feedback to the students in order to improve their speaking skills.

Abstract

The development of batik has spread to almost all subdistricts and villages, especially in East Java. Each community strives to produce and find uniqueness in creating their batik motifs. In Singosari Subdistrict, Malang Regency, there is a community of batik craftsmen from villages and subdistricts in the Singosari area, namely the Singosari Batik Association. To date, numerous batik motifs have been created. However, these have not yet met sales targets due to the lack of a distinctive and unique batik identity from the artisans of the Singosari Batik Association. Therefore, guidance is needed in exploring ideas for motifs, as well as experimenting with forms, compositions, and colors in designing batik motifs that can reflect the identity of Singosari batik artisans. In exploring the uniqueness of Singosari motifs, two approaches are used. The first is through the traditional culture of Singosari, which can be traced back to the historical greatness of the Singosari kingdom in the past. The second approach is through the culture that has been developed in the present day. These two approaches can be used to describe the form of Singosari motifs. To strengthen the identity of Singosari motifs, color can also support the composition of the motifs. When determining the characteristic colors of Singosari, natural colors can be sourced from plants that grow and are endemic to Singosari. Some motifs resulting from the redesign of craftsmen's sketches have also been re-explored and transformed into new motifs that craftsmen can use as design inspiration for future batik creations. The diversity of attractive batik motifs will undoubtedly influence consumer purchasing power, thereby increasing the production output of the Singosari Batik Association. It is hoped that the batik fabric produced will once again become the signature fabric of Singosari, recognized by all segments of society, and represent East Java both domestically and internationally in the future.

Abstract

For many university-level EFL students, speaking in a second language can be quite a challenge. It often involves grappling with the complexities of the L2 language. To help tackle these hurdles and boost students' speaking confidence, Oral Communication Strategies can be quite beneficial. In this research, we used a mixed-method approach, which included surveys via questionnaires and in-depth interviews. We received responses from 110 completed questionnaires and gained further data by interviewing 10 students. The findings revealed that students tend to rely on Oral Communication Strategies when they face difficulties in communicating in a second language. They often resort to such strategies, such as using gestures, facial expressions, miming, or sound imitation, especially when they struggle to explain a vocabulary item. These results are anticipated to be a valuable resource for educators and practitioners, assisting them in tailoring the curriculum and providing a more enriching learning experience for students learning a second language. The study's findings can help language learners and educators in higher education by using oral communication strategies to create effective learning environments for improved communication.
