Abstract

Research on the determination of lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) heavy metal contamination levels using the GFA-AAS method has been carried out in food samples. The aim of this study was to determine the levels of lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) metal contamination so that they do not exceed the threshold limit set according to the Food and Drug Supervisory Agency Regulation No. 9 of 2022. The research was carried out by destroying the sample using HNO3(p) and H2O2(p) into microwave. Additions were made of matrix modifiers (mixture of Mg(NO3)2. 6H2O in 0,5% HNO3 and 1% NH4H2PO4 in 0,5% HNO3 (1:1)). Determination of heavy metal content in food was determined by the Carbon Furnace Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry (GFA-AAS) method with a wavelength of 283.3 nm for lead (Pb) and 228.8 nm for cadmium (Cd). The results of measuring the levels of heavy metal lead (Pb) contamination in food samples were 0,016 mg/kg and 0,015 mg/kg for the heavy metal cadmium (Cd). Based on the Regulation of the Food and Drug Supervisory Agency No 9 of 2022 concerning Requirements for Heavy Metal Contamination in Processed Foods, the maximum limit for metal contamination of lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) in processed food is 0,30 mg/kg, where the results obtained do not exceed threshold, so that the sample is fit for consumption. Keywords: Lead, Cadmium, Carbon Furnace Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry, Food.

Abstract

Green synthesis of silver nanoparticles using plants has been interesting in recent years. In the present study, the silver nanoparticles were synthesized using a bioreductor from ketapang leaf extract (Terminalia catappa L.) assisted by sonochemical methods. This green synthesis provides an economic, eco-friendly, and clean synthesis route for silver nanoparticles. Different concentrations of AgNO3 precursors (0.5; 1.0 and 1.5 mM) were initially reacted with ketapang leaf extract with PVA 1% solution as stabilizers that were sonicated for 30 minutes. Silver nanoparticle colloidal solutions were characterized using UV-Vis spectrophotometers, Particle Size Analyzers (PSA), and Transmission Electron Microscopes (TEM). Maximum absorption of silver nanoparticles was obtained at wavelength 420-450 nm. Based on UV data, the silver nanoparticles showed stability for up to 3 weeks. The XRD peaks indicated that the (111) crystallographic plane was more predominant than other planes. The average size of the silver nanoparticles was 79.7 nm from the PSA result. TEM imaging depicted that the nanoparticles were spherical. Finally, the result proved that the silver nanoparticles effectively removed the methylene blue up to 76.43% within optimum conditions (3 ppm of methylene blue, 15 minutes contact time, and 8% nanoparticle concentration).

Abstract

Tests of sunscreen activity of meniran (Phyllanthus niruri L.) herbs extract has been done. The methodwas carried out using an UV-Vis spectrophotometer in vitro based on the method of A. J. Petro. The sunscreenactivity based on the value of the Sun Protection Factor (SPF) meniran herbs extract, respectively, was 1,826;3,337; 6,096; 11,132 and 20,354. The SPF value of sunscreen activity showed that meniran herbs extract has aminimum to ultra protection category.

Abstract

Adsorbent silica from rice husk ash supported by chitosan can be used to adsorb Mn (Total) metal. The adsorbent is regulated by adjusting the composition of 65% silica and 35% chitosan. The characteristics of the silica-chitosan adsorbent and the adsorbent interaction with Mn (Total) are believed to be based on Fourier Transform Infared (FTIR) data. The concentration of Mn (Total) ion after adsorption is determined by Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS). The results showed optimum pH at pH 5 percentage adsorption 79.45% and optimum contact time at 60 minutes with adsorption percentage 96.78%, and obtained chitosan-silica adsorption capacity of Mn (Total) ions of 1.0349 mg/g.

Abstract

Abstract

The study investigates chitosan crosslinking from clam shells (Cerithidea obtusa) with tripolyphosphate for cadmium (II) adsorption. Chitosan was prepared by deacetylating chitin using 60% NaOH and heating at 140°C for 60 minutes. Chitin was isolated from Cerithidea obtusa shells, an abundant waste in East Kalimantan. Crosslinking of chitosan with tripolyphosphate was synthesized via gelation methods, dissolving 5 g of chitosan in acetic acid and adding 0.1% tripolyphosphate as a crosslinker. The chitosan-tripolyphosphate characterization was conducted using FTIR, XRD, and SEM. FTIR spectra revealed an N-H vibration at 1635 cm−1, NH3+ deformation at 1534 cm−1, C-O stretching at 1072 cm−1, and P-O vibration at 1026.91 cm−1, indicating the presence of tripolyphosphate in chitosan. The XRD pattern showed broad peaks at 19.85° and 23.50°, characteristic of amorphous chitosan-tripolyphosphate. SEM images depicted a flat sheet without pores and a tight surface. Cadmium (II) adsorption on chitosan-tripolyphosphate at an optimum pH of 4 followed a pseudo-second-order kinetic model. It adhered to the Langmuir isotherm model, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 27.8 mg/g. The results demonstrate that chitosan crosslinked with tripolyphosphate effectively for cadmium (II) adsorption.
