Abstract

Abstract

Mechanism of parasitism of Trichoderma harzianum on Fusarium oxysporum on Acacia mangium seedlings. Fusarium oxysporum is one of the most important soil-borne fungi the causal agent of damping-off disease. Detailed information it needed to know how the pathogen can be inhibited by Trichoderma harzianum. The objective of this research was to investigate the inhibition mechanism of T. harzianum on F. oxysporum in vitro and in planta. Green Flourescent Protein (GFP) T. harzianum was used as biocontrol agent of F. oxysporum. An in vitro inhibition test of T. harzianum was performed using dual culture method. In the in planta inhibition tests, seedlings of A. mangium were applied with GFP T. harzianum two days before inoculation of F. oxysporum; GFP T. harzianum was simultaneously applied with F. oxysporum and GFP T. harzianum was applied two days after inoculation of F. oxysporum. The inhibition effect of T. harzianum GFP was observed at seven days incubation, indicated by attachment of T. harzianum to F. oxysporum hyphae. GFP T. harzianum hyphae covered the colonies of F. oxysporum at 12 days after incubation. The highest life percentage of A. mangium seedlings was found on the treatment of GFP T. harzianum two days before inoculation of F. oxysporum (82.22%), whereas the lowest life percentage was found on seedling applied with GFP T. harzianum two days after inoculation of F. oxysporum (64.44%).

Abstract

Abstract

Fusarium oxysporum is the causal agent of damping-off disease. The fungus attacks seedlings of many plant species, including Acacia mangium. In order to effectively control the disease, detailed information on how the fungus infects seedlings of A. mangium and how the plant responds to the fungal infection is essentially needed. The objectives of this research were to investigate: (1) the infection process of F. oxysporumon seedlings of A. mangium, (2) the defence response of A. mangium seedling to infection by F. oxysporum. The fungal pathogen was identified, followed by performance of pathogenicity test. The infection process was followed by macroscopic observation as well as microscopic observation. The result indicated that fungal spore germination was observed at two-day post inoculation in planta. At four-daypost inoculation, hyphae of F. oxysporum had penetrated the collar root of A. mangium seedling via stomata aperture. In addition, fungal hyphae had grown intercellulary in to the vascular tissue. Correspondingly, hypersensitive response was also detected at the stomata aperture. However, this defence mechanism is not effective in stopping the fungus since F. oxysporum is a necrotropic pathogen. Moreover, accumulation of lignin, but not callose, was observed. Abstract

This study aims to preserve the diversity of orchid species that are used as useful plants and have economic value. The methods used in this study are exploration, observation, species description. The technique used in sampling was carried out purposively when orchid species were found in the roaming area which was carried out randomly in an area of 10 hectares. It was revealed from the results of observations that 128 individuals were collected which were classified into 25 genera and 31 species were identified. The observed orchid habitus lives as epiphytic and terrestrial or lithophytic plants. Generally, species that live as epiphytes are more often found. Orchid habitats can be significantly distinguished in lowland tropical rainforests and swamp forests with humidity ranging from 80-85% and temperatures between 26-28% at night and 30-34% during the day. Topographic conditions are relatively flat to a slope of 45%. Vegetation cover is quite dense, but in some location, there are gaps in the canopy, providing opportunities for breakthroughs in sunlight intensity during the day. Conservation efforts are carried out on species that are often hunted and used as ornamental plants such as Bulbophyllum phalaenopsis, Coelogyne beccarii, Coelogyne asperata, Dendrobium antennatum, Dendrobium macrophyllum, Dendrovium shiraishii, Dendrobium spectabile, Grammatophyllum scriptum, Grammatophyllum speciosum and Pomatocalpa marsupiale. The Conservation Status of the collected species is generally categorized under IUCN Redlist as Data Deficiency (DD) and Least Concern (LC) clusters .

Abstract

Abstract. Tasik S, Widyastuti SM, Musyafa, Suryanto P. 2021. Vegetation diversity and its interspecies association with merbau (Intsia bijuga) at three habitats of tropical rain forest in West Papua, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 22: 3383-3391. The stability of vegetation community indicated by species diversity, structure and composition affects the relationship between species. The understanding of interspecies association in their natural habitat is important especially for management and conservation strategies of species with particular interest, including merbau (Intsia bijuga O. Colebr Kuntze), a timber tree species with high commercial value. This study aims to investigate the diversity and composition of vegetation coexisting with merbau, and to see whether there is pattern of interspecies association with merbau. Vegetation analyses of species richness, diversity index, evenness index and interspecies relationship were conducted at three research locations in West Papua, Indonesia, namely Mount Meja Natural Tourism Park (Hutan Taman Wisata Alam Gunung Meja/HTWAGM), Bembab Beach Forest of South Manokwari (Hutan Bembab Pantai Manokwari Selatan/HBPMS) and Bembab Mountain Forest of South Manokwari (Hutan Bembab Gunung Manokwari Selatan/HBGMS). The results showed that the species Caryota rumphiana, Licuala sp 1, Calophyllum inophyllum, Garcinia pichoriza, Pometia coreacea and Pometia pinnata always grew side by side with Intsia bijuga in three locations. Furthermore, the association analysis indicated a positive and strong relationship between Intsia bijuga and Pometia coreacea, Licuala sp1, Licuala sp 2, Caryota rumphiana at all three research sites. In addition, Pometia coracea had the highest Chi-square value (X2 = 20.00) with the value of the three association indexes reached maximum value. We also found that the vegetation communities in the habitat of merbau had varying vegetation structure and composition as well as biodiversity indicators, yet they were all at stable state. The finding on vegetation analyses was confirmed with the result of soil analyses in which the physical and chemical properties had optimal conditions for vegetation to grow, including for merbau.

Abstract. Moeljono S, Gunawan E, Husodo SB, Nugroho JD, Mofu WY, Tampang A, Beljai M, Sadsoeitoeboen BMG, Kesaulija FF, Mahmud, Iwanggin MP, Simbiak VI, Tasik S, Worabai MS, Padang DA, Yogaswara R. 2025. Analysis of sago starch (Metroxylon sagu) quality from various cultivars in the Yapen Islands, Papua, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 26: 2717-2725. Sago (Metroxylon sagu) is a palm plant that produces carbohydrates and possesses significant potential to support food security and industry in the Yapen Islands District, Papua. This study aimed to analyze the quality of sago starch from the various cultivars that thrive in the region. A quantitative method using a survey research design was applied, with sampling conducted in the Eastern and Western Yapen Sub-Clusters from January to March 2024. The physicochemical analysis of sago starch was carried out at the Forest Products Technology Laboratory of the University of Papua. The results indicate a diversity of sago cultivars in both areas, with the Woru and Noyn cultivars dominating Western Yapen, and Kurai and Amiri in Eastern Yapen. The starch yield varied significantly between cultivars, with the Noyn (630 kg/tree) and Huworu (264 kg/tree) cultivars recording the highest production. The physicochemical characteristics revealed a variation in moisture content (1.66-4.78%), fineness (88.98-95.12%), ash content (0.91-1.39%), and degree of acidity (1.3-5.7). The Kurai, Huworu, and Woru cultivars exhibited superior characteristics for food industry applications, while Makubong and Dami showed potential for non-food applications. The development of sago agro-business in the Yapen Islands District necessitates the selection of appropriate cultivars and the strengthening of post-harvest management systems to optimize both economic and ecological value.

Abstract

Red fruit (Pandanus conoideus Lam.) is an indigenous food species in Papua with nutritional, cultural, and livelihood importance, yet its local silvicultural management and contribution to climate resilience remain poorly documented. This study characterised local knowledge-based silvicultural practices in Hingk Village, Manokwari, and examined farmers’ perceptions of climate-related production changes. A descriptive mixed-methods approach combined field observations with interviews involving 20 red fruit farmers. Quantitative data were analysed descriptively, while qualitative information was interpreted thematically. Red fruit was predominantly propagated vegetatively using 30–80 cm shoots, planted at approximately 2–4 m spacing, and managed with low external inputs, principally manual weeding without synthetic fertilisers. Plants generally began fruiting 4–6 years after planting and produced approximately 1–5 fruits per plant annually, with individual fruits weighing 3–10 kg. Sixty-five per cent of respondents reported changes in fruiting periods, yield stability, or production patterns associated with increasing climate variability. Integrating red fruit into mixed agroforestry systems may diversify production, reduce dependence on external inputs, and strengthen household adaptive capacity. These findings identify local silvicultural knowledge as a valuable foundation for climate-resilient food systems in Papua and support its integration with scientific research, improved planting materials, and locally appropriate extension services.
