Abstract

The present study aims to analyze the process of translating the Qur'an into Tolaki. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and document analysis. Analysis was conducted using Hans J. Vermeer's Skopos theory. The findings indicate that the translation process of the Qur'an into Tolaki is tailored to the translation's purpose, utilizing Indonesian as the source language. The predominant translation ideology favors foreignization over domestication; the method employed is more inclined towards semantic rather than communicative translation. The prevalent levels of speech include 'anakia' and 'iwawo', and Arabic is sometimes used to clarify ambiguous meanings in Indonesian. Consequently, this study underscores the importance of adapting sacred texts to local social and cultural contexts. This adaptation involves selecting methodologies sensitive to the nuances of Tolaki society and employing language strategies that preserve authenticity and religious relevance. As a result, this translation serves as an effective communication tool and a symbol of the integration of religious and cultural identities in the lives of the Tolaki people.

Abstract

It has been a formula in films, comics, animations, and games to narrate a protagonist who turns into an antagonist to offer an alternate narrative to enjoy. This good-to-evil and weak-to-strong transformation is followed by changes in the names of the characters. We argue that the name changes are marked by what we called as umbralatives, an augmentative marker to indicate that a character has undergone a nuance shift from light to dark and an increase in power. This study attempts to address this phenomenon by proving the existence of umbralatives, their typology, and functions. Applying Zwicky and Pullum’s expressive morphology, Dressler and Barbaresi’s morphopragmatics, and Reinhart’s gestalt perception of narrative texts, we attempt to prove the existence of umbralatives. Implementing Spradleyan analysis on a corpus of characters from seventy one titles of animations, comics, films, and games, it was revealed that umbralatives are classified into colorative, stative, referentive, inventive, and elliptive. These five umbralatives function as a narrative marker in animations, comics, and films and a ludic marker in games. This study discloses a new field of study on morphology with special emphasis over the combination of morphopragmatics and onomastics – umbralatives. The results of the study might also disclose further investigations over good-to-evil narratives which we call umbral narratives.

Abstract

Albeit the studies on Matan Jurumiyah Book have been extensively conducted, few studies have been focusing on the critical content of Kitab Matan Jurumiyah. To fill the gap, this research aims to examine why Matan Jurumiyah Book is not applicable for novice Arabic learners. To collect the data, observation and in-depth interviews were conducted. The results of the study show that the material of the Matan Jurumiyah is not relevant to be used for the novice learners due to (1) the conciseness and condensation of the book contents, (2) the lackness of Arabic basic knowledge, (3) the raising of new problems for novice learners because of the number of syarah or explanation over the Book of Matan Jurumiyah.  That empirical evidence was anchored to the internal and external factors. Internal factors are closely related to the dichotomy of syntax and morphology while external factors are related to the absence of consideration of the Indonesian context and are arranged in a deductive way. Therefore, this study recommends empirical, contextual, and policy implications for the readers.

Abstract

The art of calligraphy painting by Syaiful Adnan and its beauty are interesting to study due to their distinctive characteristics. Adnan’s script or type of writing differs from the standard style of script from the Middle East. In his hand, creative processes and various dynamics of aesthetic aspects tend to glide calmly. Syaiful Adnan has had solo and collective exhibitions at home and abroad which present the holy verses of the Qur'an as well as hadith and Mahfudzot or words of wisdom as central themes. This research uses archival research method to study various references and documentation as well as direct interviews. Data is analysed inductively by organizing it, describing it into units, synthesizing, composing into patterns, choosing what is important and what will be studied, and present it in this article.  The study discovered that spiritual aspects found in Syaiful Adnan’s calligraphy painting is a form of representation of monotheism and dhikr. The oneness of Allah can easily be understood through a series of verses of the Qur'an that contain all the greatness, majesty and omnipotence of the Almighty. From here we can see that the works of Syaiful Adnan were made a communication medium for the audience's awareness and Syaiful Adnan's own self. Furthermore, Syaiful's calligraphy is also a form of visual dhikr, reading and realizing continuously about the verses of God.
