Abstract

English has long been recognized as a crucial medium of international communication, serving not only educational purposes but also supporting career development. However, many students experience difficulties in understanding English expressions and sentences, a challenge that is particularly evident in listening comprehension among EFL students in Indonesia. Listening is widely regarded as one of the most difficult language skills for learners of English. This study aims to investigate the barriers faced by Indonesian university students in English listening comprehension and to explore the implications of these barriers for listening curriculum development. The data were collected through semi-structured interviews with eight students from Indonesian higher education institutions. The findings reveal that the main obstacles encountered by students include limited understanding of pronunciation and exposure to different accents, insufficient English vocabulary, poor clarity of audio input, and difficulty in comprehending fast speech rates. To enhance listening comprehension, students need continuous and repeated exposure to authentic listening materials, such as audio recordings from native speakers, English podcasts, speeches, motivational videos on YouTube, English songs, and movies. The implications of these findings for the development of an effective listening curriculum are discussed in this paper.

Abstract

The development of micro features on social media has introduced new forms of self expression that have not been widely studied in depth, one of which is Instagram Notes. This study aims to understand how students interpret and use Instagram Notes as a space for self expression in their digital lives. The study employed a qualitative approach with phenomenological methods, involving students as purposively selected participants. Data were collected through in depth interviews and analyzed thematically to uncover patterns of experience and meaning in using the feature. The results indicate that Instagram Notes is used as a personal, ephemeral, and non performative space for expression, primarily for channeling emotions and self reflection without the need for visual representation or an orientation toward audience response. These findings confirm that Instagram Notes functions as a space for intrapersonal expression within the digital public sphere, thus broadening the understanding of self expression practices and emotion regulation in contemporary digital communication studies.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze therapeutic communication practices employed by volunteers in community-based care for people with mental disorders (ODGJ). The focus of the research is directed at the meaning, communication strategies, and challenges faced by volunteers in the mentoring process. This study used a qualitative approach with a narrative study method. Data were obtained through in depth interviews with volunteers directly involved in mentoring people with mental disorders. Data were analyzed by tracing the informants' narrative flow to identify key themes in therapeutic communication practices, which were then interpreted using a therapeutic communication theoretical framework. The results indicate that volunteers' therapeutic communication is adaptive and contextual, not tied to formal clinical procedures. Volunteers interpret therapeutic communication as a process of building a sense of safety and empathetic relationships, especially in crisis situations. These communication practices involve strategic flexibility, the use of nonverbal communication, and the communicator's emotional regulation. These findings confirm that volunteers play a strategic role as therapeutic communication actors in community-based mental health services. This research contributes to the development of therapeutic communication studies by expanding its application beyond formal professional settings.

Abstract

Kawasan Ekonomi Khusus (KEK) Mandalika merupakan salah satu destinasi super prioritas nasional yang mengalami peningkatan signifikan kunjungan wisatawan mancanegara dan domestik. Kondisi ini membuka peluang ekonomi bagi masyarakat lokal, khususnya pedagang informal di sekitar kawasan wisata. Namun, keterbatasan kompetensi bahasa Inggris dalam konteks layanan pariwisata menjadi kendala utama yang menghambat kualitas interaksi dan daya saing pedagang lokal. Kegiatan Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat (PPM) ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kompetensi komunikasi bahasa Inggris kontekstual bagi pedagang sekitar KEK Mandalika melalui pendekatan berbasis masyarakat. Metode pelaksanaan kegiatan menggunakan pendekatan partisipatif dan kontekstual, yang meliputi identifikasi kebutuhan mitra, penyusunan modul bahasa Inggris layanan pariwisata (hospitality communication), pelatihan intensif berbasis praktik (role-play dan simulasi lapangan), pemberian media pembelajaran sederhana, serta pendampingan dan evaluasi pascapelatihan. Evaluasi dilakukan melalui pre-test dan post-test, observasi langsung di lokasi berdagang, serta umpan balik dari peserta. Hasil kegiatan menunjukkan adanya peningkatan kemampuan pedagang dalam menggunakan ungkapan bahasa Inggris dasar untuk menyapa wisatawan, menjelaskan produk, menyebutkan harga, dan menjawab pertanyaan sederhana. Selain peningkatan aspek keterampilan, terjadi perubahan sikap berupa meningkatnya kepercayaan diri dan keberanian pedagang dalam berinteraksi dengan wisatawan asing. Kegiatan ini juga berdampak positif terhadap kualitas pelayanan dan persepsi wisatawan terhadap keramahan masyarakat lokal. Secara keseluruhan, program ini membuktikan bahwa pelatihan bahasa Inggris kontekstual berbasis masyarakat efektif sebagai instrumen pemberdayaan ekonomi lokal dan mendukung pengembangan pariwisata yang inklusif dan berkelanjutan di KEK Mandalika

Abstract

The rapid development of digital technology has brought significant changes to the business landscape, transforming how products are marketed, services are delivered, and business relationships are built. In this context, students, as future members of the workforce and potential entrepreneurs, are required to possess strong digital literacy skills in order to effectively face challenges and seize emerging business opportunities. This study aims to analyze the importance of digital literacy in supporting students’ readiness to respond to future business trends. The research employed a descriptive approach using a literature review and observations of the entrepreneurship learning process in vocational schools. The findings indicate that digital literacy plays a crucial role in enhancing students’ creativity, adaptability, and ability to utilize digital platforms for online marketing, branding, and business communication. Furthermore, digital literacy helps students understand market dynamics, analyze consumer behavior, and adopt innovative business models that align with technological developments. Students with adequate digital literacy are better prepared to face rapid changes in the business environment and demonstrate higher confidence in applying technology to entrepreneurial activities. In conclusion, the integration of digital literacy into entrepreneurship education is essential to produce competitive, innovative, and adaptable graduates who are capable of thriving in the digital era and contributing to sustainable economic development.
