Abstract

This research examines the function of taglines and the semiotic structure of taglines used in the Free Palestine movement. The research examines the issue of how these taglines function as communicative tools and struggle tools, shaping meaning through semiotic mechanisms. Despite their widespread use on digital platforms, academic exploration of the communicative role and semiotic dimensions of these taglines is rare. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, this study applied semiotic theory, specifically using Charles Sanders Peirce's triadic model to analyze the selected taglines. The results of this study reveal several types of taglines, including descriptive, specific, superlative, imperative, provocative, each of which has a function as a form of support, expressing solidarity and challenging the dominant narrative. This research also identifies a semiotic structure consisting of Representamen (tagline as a sign), object (socio-political issue) and interpretant (ideological meaning constructed by the audience). This research concludes that the tagline in the Free Palestine Movement does not only convey linguistic expression but is a powerful semiotic instrument to provide resistance and mobilize public sentiment.

Abstract

Translation of metaphors in song lyrics presents a unique challenge, especially in the context of human versus machine translation. This study investigates how metaphors in Maher Zain’s Insha Allah and Harris J’s Worth It are interpreted and translated differently by human translators and machine translation tools such as Google Translate and DeepL. Using a descriptive qualitative approach with a comparative analysis method, this research identifies the translation techniques used and evaluates how effectively the metaphorical meanings and emotional tones are conveyed in both types of translations. The findings reveal that machine translators tend to translate metaphors literally, often missing cultural and emotional nuances. In contrast, human translators employ strategies like adaptation and paraphrasing to preserve implied meanings and emotional resonance. Furthermore, machine translation performs better on culturally universal metaphors but fails to accurately render idiomatic and emotionally rich metaphors. This study highlights the ongoing relevance of human translators in conveying metaphorical meaning in creative texts and contributes to the broader discourse on translation quality and technique in the age of artificial intelligence.

Abstract

This research aims to contribute to the analysis of feminism related to patriarchal culture and its resistance in the Why Women Kill television series that was released in 2019 and directed by Marc Cherry. The television series Why Women Kill (2019) illustrates that patriarchal culture grows and develops in people's lives as shown by the dominance of men over women in various aspects of society which causes women to experience underdevelopment and limited access to many fields in life. The analysis in this study includes the depiction of patriarchal culture in Why Women Kill (2019) and the resistance to patriarchal culture by female characters in Why Women Kill (2019). In conducting the analysis, the researcher used literary criticism method by using the theory of feminism from the thoughts of Mary Wollstonecraft and Helene Cixous to analyze feminism related to patriarchal culture and its resistance. This research found data analysis of 70 scenes in the film in the form of screenshots and dialogues. This research depicted patriarchy as a culture that is limiting women which makes women backward and disadvantaged, that patriarchy is depicting women as good mothers and wives, depending on men superiority, and as objects to satisfy men desires. In its resistance, women reject the traditional norms by being educated and having dreams and jobs. Women also resist to patriarchy by being independent from role of men, independent in defending themselves, and independent in making life decisions. Women also depicted to rebel against control of men. This research makes an answer to the title of this television series that “why women kill” because they wanted to “kill” norms and cultures that limit and harm women themselves and only fellow women understand how to be in that position.
