Abstract

Abstract

Acne vulgaris is the most common skin disorder in adults and young adults. The growth of acne is caused by many factors, including excess sebum secretion and changes in microbial flora, mainly the colonization of Propionibacterium acnes and Staphylococcus aureus. This study aimed to determine the anti-bacterial activity of palm leaf extract against Propionibacterium acnes and Staphylococcus aureus. The research procedure includes palm leaf extraction and anti-bacterial tests. Palm leaf extraction was carried out using ultrasonication, while the anti-bacterial test was carried out using disc diffusion. The palm leaf extract obtained was diluted to 10, 20, 30, 50, and 50%, and each variation of this concentration was tested for anti-bacterial activity. The results of the anti-bacterial test showed that all palm leaf extract samples from 10% to 50% concentration could inhibit the growth of P. acnes and S. aureus bacteria. The 50% extract of ultrasonicated palm leaves had the largest inhibition zone diameter of 13.8 mm for P. acnes bacteria and 10.1 for S. aureus bacteria. From the results of this study, palm leaf extract has the potential to be used as a product for the prevention or treatment of acne vulgaris.

Abstract

This research was conducted with the aim to produce a biodegradable plastic from waste plastic polypropylene mixing with the starch of durian seeds by adding maleic anhydride as a crosslinking agent, and benzoyl peroxide as initiator. In this study, carried out with a variety of ingredients are added with a certain ratio that is successively waste Polypropylene, starch from durian seeds, maleic anhydride and benzoyl peroxide are (94:6:1), (94:6:1:1), (94:6:2:1), (94:6:3:1). Biodegradable plastic in the characterization of the analysis with the ability to decompose in nature biodegradable test, with embedding samples of biodegradable plastic produced into three types of soil, namely normal soil, ground litter and sand for 1 month. Each sample was observed a decrease in mass every 10 days. From Biodegradabel in nature results obtained mass loss that has been grown for 1 month is on the ground litter by 9.08% in the sample by varying the composition (94:6:1:1).

Abstract

Research on the extraction of starch from unproductive palm oil rods to utilize unproductive palm oil waste into useful materials. This study consists of three stages. The first stage is making sample preparation. The second stage is the process of starch extraction. The last stage is the characterization of starch from the oil palm rod obtained. The characterization of starch yield obtained was analyzed by functional group with FTIR test and thermal characteristic analysis by DTA test. The results showed that the starch of the palm oil rods produced has a good character where the FTIR results show the specific groups for starch and DTA results according to the decomposition point of starch that is at the temperature of 408oC.

Abstract

The first stage of this research was to make polystyrene grafted with maleic anhydride for making the couping agent with other filling compound. In the second stage, the polystyrene matrix grafted with maleic anhydride was combined with filler material derived from palm oil mill waste using the dry mixing method with an internal mixer. Among several variables tested, the optimum composition of the polymer composite was found to be Polystyrene grafted with maleic anhydride: sludge: boiler ash in a ratio of 60:25:15. This composition exhibited a Young's modulus of 856.752 MPa, a tensile strength of 6.057 MPa, and an elongation at break of 0.775%. Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) testing revealed a glass transition temperature of 403.22°C, a crystallization temperature of 426.39°C, and a cross-linking indication temperature of 478.64°C. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) tests showed an even distribution of the material. Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy indicated a decrease in absorption peaks at 3024.94 cm⁻¹ and 3025.15 cm⁻¹, while the polystyrene characteristics at the wave number 1600.57 cm⁻¹ appeared sharper. The sound absorption test results met the ISO 11654:1997 standard for the rating level of sound absorption coefficient in materials, achieving Class D and C sound absorption with an αₙₓ value ranging from 0.328 to 0.793.

Abstract

The recent application of palm empty fruit bunches as solid waste directly on soil or as organic fertilizer has enhanced palm farms. Moreover, the co-products of this palm oil mill constitute a dependable metric for assessing mill processing performance, specifically regarding quantity and weight. The quantity of palm empty fruit bunches is usually ascertained through manual counting using a hand counter during processing. The imprecision in calculating palm empty fruit bunches is a limitation of this method, as operators sometimes perform erroneous calculations, overlook quantities, and produce contradictory results for mill management. To address this issue, the sector requires enhanced execution of a monitoring and counting system methodology. The aim of this community service project is to create an empty fruit bunches count station using an IoTbased palm solid waste counting system for use in palm mills. The Ministry of Industry - Politeknik Teknologi Kimia Industri (PTKI) Medan will engage in and oversee the advancement of Industry 4.0 within the industrial sector. The initiative was executed at Tanah Gambus Estate in Batubara Regency, North Sumatra. Assistance was provided by a palm mill partner associated with PT. Socfin Indonesia. The implementation of the empty fruit bunches palm oil counting system was conducted efficiently, facilitating optimal operations, real–time online monitoring, uninterrupted functionality exceeding 24 hours daily, swift assessment of the empty fruit bunches volume, immediate identification of traditional counting inaccuracies by operators and management, and its station provides benefits to the palm industry.
