Abstract

The door to globalization for an Indonesian product is believed possible only when fulfilling some characteristics of other nation’s culture. To ensure the global popularity of a product, therefore, there is a need of mixing the local with a global culture. The cultural hybridity strategy of mixing local-global scenes is evident in the invention of a TOEFL-like game software, which based itself on a mobile application for its platform. With the platform, the game becomes easily downloadable through Google Playstore. It is innovative as it accommodates the Generation Z’s characteristics who are digital savvy. In the game, an animation is created for Listening section which takes in some forms of Javanese culture that are made hybrid with some American and Japanese ones. In finding out how successful the game is in fulfilling the needs of TOEFL-like game players, a Technology Accepted Model questionnaire is given to students from Indonesia and Japan. Japanese players, who are English Department students, were chosen on the assumption that they are more digital savvy. This article reports that the game is useful and beneficial in raising the English competence of both Indonesian and Japanese students. With the cultural hybridity strategy in creating the animation, the players agree that the game is a good model for learning about the English language in a fun and innovative way.

Abstract

Historically, quilt making has been recorded in the United States (U.S.) since the 18th century not only for its function but for the social expression of its people to their environment. The different colors and symbols used in designing and making quilts give knowledge to what quilt creators want to express. By use of library research and semiotics for an analytical-descriptive discussion, the socio-cultural and historical perspectives of U.S. quilts are found to explain how designs have evolved from the 18th to the 21st century of the U.S. The semiotics method has also shown how through an American Studies transnational process of cross bordering countries, the U.S. quilt has influenced its neighboring countries, like Indonesia. This article shares how a number of U.S. quilt patterns, colors and cultural values are found in Indonesian quilt. Among the cultural values found are the maintenance of loyalty and obedience. Interestingly, while the U.S. cultural value of individualism is respected, the Indonesian collectivism is preferred more in quilt making.

Abstract

People doing work from home are mostly depending on what the internet has to offer for communication. Because people want to make good use of the Internet for communication, such information is available in English as a global language. One of the advantages of having ready information in English is that local cultural products can now have better chances to compete globally with products from other cultures. One of those products is Indonesia’s Batik Semarangan, which is produced in Semarang, the capital city of Central Java. Through studying the motifs found in Batik Semarangan, an intercultural communication awareness of rich hybrid culture can be achieved. To ensure awareness, a group of English Department’s literature students was trained to do library and field research on Batik Semarangan. By applying Roland Barthes’ semiotics, students were encouraged to explore the hidden reasons for the unique choice of Batik Semarangan motifs. By doing this activity, not only were the students equipped to be more critical in researching local products but the lecturer has also helped preserve and elevate Batik as a traditional heritage that has global potentiality.

Abstract

Misunderstanding and misperception in communication often occur due to listeners’ failure to grasp the accurate meaning of a speaker’s utterances. These failures are typically caused by a lack of pragmatic competence in understanding the contexts and conditions of speakers when interacting with listeners in specific situations. An example of communication failure is seen with individuals experiencing serious mental illness (ISMI). Communicating and interacting with ISMI is challenging due to their communication disorders. Their speech and behavior are often impacted by hallucinations, delusions, disorganized talk and abnormal thought processes. This study aimed to explore effective communication strategy to deal with ISMI. The case study involved 3 (three) ISMI who met the eligibility criteria. An inductive qualitative method employing participant observation and documentary analysis was used. Data collection included primary, secondary and tertiary sources, which were triangulated with in-depth interviews with their families. Data analysis was conducted through thematic coding, which revealed that pragmatic competence (80%), Compassionate Psychiatric Care (CPC; 15%) and ecological conduciveness (5%) are key factors in improving communication fluency with ISMI. This article concludes that the speech therapy method developed by Angelicdolly, which combines pragmatic principles with compassion for the ecological conduciveness of ISMI is an effective strategy for enhancing communication with these individuals.

Abstract

Gudeg, a traditional culinary dish from Yogyakarta, Indonesia, is prepared by cooking young jackfruit with coconut milk and spices. It is commonly served with rice, eggs, chicken, and sambal goreng krecek, which is a spicy blended chili cooked with savory edible soft cowhide. Gudeg is interesting to discuss as it holds a rich history and is a cultural legacy that has been passed down through generations in Indonesia. Over time, gudeg producers have introduced an innovation of providing a visually attractive label on canned packages.  This gives reason for research on gudeg using a cultural, food safety, and visual design perspective. The research found that culturally gudeg was the staple for the Mataram Kingdom army to survive the battle against enemies who wanted to colonialize the area. Next, the food safety test revealed that canned Gudeg Bagong had a microbial count of 1.3 x 10-1 CFU/ml, while canned Gudeg Andrawina Loka had a count of 2.4 x 10-2 CFU/ml. The findings demonstrated that the microbiological analysis met the standards set by Ministry of Health Regulation No. 416/MENKES/PER/IX/1990 and Indonesian Food and Drug Authority Regulation No. HK.00.06.1.S2.4011. Lastly, through visual design research, it was found among others that local and foreign tourists prefer to see the actual photo display of gudeg set with its jackfruit, egg, chicken, and sambal goreng krecek contents.
