Abstract

Contestations related to hierarchy among the Balinese have long been discussed.  In present-day Bali, one of the most spectacular cases of hierarchical conflict was the conflict surrounding the prohibition of a high priest from Wangsa Pasek (Pasek Maxima Clan) from officiating rituals in Pura Dasar Bhuana in Gelgel, Klungkung. This conflict triggered the construction of a new temple, called Pura Catur Parhyangan Ratu Pasek Linggih Ida Bethara Mpu Ghana located in Pundukdawa village, also in Klungkung district. This research aimed to analyse in depth the motivation of the temple construction and its ramifications, employing a qualitative research approach. It concluded that the development of the new temple is a movement to search and strengthen identity (wangsa identity, identitas ke-wangsa-an), and to increase the maxima clan’s standing. The findings of this research suggest that in analysing the current hierarchy and dominance in Balinese society, it can no longer employ analytical theories based on static hierarchy.

Abstract

Bali's economic landscape, intricately interwoven with tourism, integrates cultural-urban agriculture via the Subak system. Subak is an organization owned by the farmers in Bali that specifically regulates water management. The government has selected several Subak in urban area to become dynamic agricultural centers named Subak Lestari. The research explores farmer perspectives on urban agriculture tourism and offering insights for future sustainable urban agriculture and cultural tourism. This qualitative study is involving 23 farmers of Subak Lestari management and reflecting scores in technical (4.01), socio-cultural (3.87), economic (4.29), and environmental (4.32) aspects. These assessments underscore confidence in Subak Lestari's potential to catalyze a development in tourism-centric urban agriculture. Farmers seriously support positions of Subak Lestari as a potent force in reshaping urban agriculture. The study advocates for stakeholders to foster a sustainable fusion of traditional agriculture and tourism to safeguard agricultural spaces and ensuring urban farmers existence.

This research examines the management and development of Subak Lestari as a sustainable tourist attraction in Denpasar City. Subak Lestari consists of five pilot subaks namely Anggabaya Subak, Umadesa Subak, Umalayu Subak, Subak Intaran Barat and Subak Intaran Barat Timur. The purpose of this study is to analyze institutional management and formulate a strategy for developing Subak Lestari as a sustainable tourist attraction in Denpasar City. This study uses an interpretive qualitative analysis method. Data collection was carried out through literature study, observation, in-depth interviews, triangulation and focus group discussions (FGD) with key informants including Subak Lestari officials, Denpasar City Government Agencies, Expert Team from academics who designed Subak Lestari, the Government and Pokdarwis in the Village and local Villages, as well as tourism actors. The results of this study found that there is a need for special management that manages Subak Lestari as tourist attraction, comprehensive HR training and assistance from related agencies, construction of tourism support facilities that still pay attention to paddy field productivity, implementation of policies and giving strict sanctions for violations related to land conversion and outreach to the community regarding the benefits of subak development as a sustainable tourist attraction. The conclusions from the research results are (1) Krama Subak is expected to maintain awig-awig in preserving agricultural land and open up to the concept of developing Subak as a tourist attraction; (2) the government is responsible for determining policies and collaborating with various related parties; (3) Academics conduct studies on concepts that are suitable for development in Subak, especially as a tourist attraction; (4) The community participates in preserving the Subak environment which has been designated as a tourist attraction.

Abstract

Conducting cremation ceremony (ngaben) in crematorium among Balinese Hindus is relatively a new phenomenon, pioneered by Maha Gotra Pasek Sanak Sapta Rsi, the biggest maxima-clan in Bali. This maxima-clan constructed a crematorium called Santhayana in 2008. The number of cremation ceremony conducted in Crematorium Santhayana increases over time, mainly due to the practical values and efficiency, compared to conducting the ceremony conventionally in one’s own village. The more affordable cost and the less intensive communication with the village of origin are yet additional reasons, especially for those residing outside Bali. By employing participant-observation and in-depth interviews in data collection, analysed qualitative-interpretively, this research confirmed Giddens’ Structuration theory, that as duality, structure is both constraining and enabling the actors. On the other hand, actors’ patterned activities will develop new structure. However, it is interesting in the case of cremation in crematorium Santhayana, that the transformation toward modernity is by making use of traditional reference, i.e. old lontar, named Yama Purana Tatwa.

Abstract

While government authority has a vital role in tourism management and destination marketing, social media serves as an essential tool in tourism communication and promotion. The shifts in consumer digital behavior, especially in the aftermath of the pandemic, created potential and challenges for government authorities to embrace social media in driving tourism recovery. This study explores the social media usage pattern of local government in post-pandemic tourism recovery, focusing on the Klungkung Regional Tourism Authority. Using content analysis methodology, social media posts were studied from official social media accounts of the authority (Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok) from January to April 2023. The result indicated that while the authority maintains its online presence on multiple platforms, engagement strategies remain suboptimal, marked by irregular posting patterns, low interactivity, and inconsistent hashtag usage. This study also revealed a significant gap in platform popularity and actual usage effectiveness. This study contributes to social media in tourism promotion literature, and the practical implications are discussed.
