Abstract

This research aimed to explain the improvement of the students’ reading comprehension in terms of literal comprehension dealing with and word meaning main ideas and interpretive comprehension dealing conclusion. To explain the improvement, the researcher used a classroom action research (CAR) which was conducted in two cycles in which every cycle consisted of four meetings. The location of this research was taken at the first semester students of English Education Department with a number of the subject were 25 students. The research findings indicated that the application of Inquiry Method was significant in improving the students’ reading comprehension in terms of literal comprehension and interpretive comprehension. It was proved by the mean score of cycle I was 68, 47. It was classified as fair then improved to be 81, 20. It was classified as good in cycle II. They are higher than the mean score of diagnostic test namely 58.40 that classified as poor. Therefore there was the improvement of the students’ reading comprehension in terms of literal comprehension dealing with word meaning and main ideas and interpretive comprehension dealing conclusion.Keywords: Inquiry, Reading, Comprehension, Method.Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menjelaskan peningkatan pemahaman membaca siswa dalam hal pemahaman literal dengan dan kata yang berarti ide-ide utama dan pemahaman interpretatif menyimpulkan kesimpulan. Untuk menjelaskan peningkatan, peneliti menggunakan penelitian tindakan kelas (PTK) yang dilakukan dalam dua siklus di mana setiap siklus terdiri dari empat pertemuan. Lokasi penelitian ini diambil pada mahasiswa semester I Jurusan Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris dengan sejumlah subjek 25 mahasiswa. Temuan penelitian menunjukkan bahwa penerapan metode Inquiry signifikan dalam meningkatkan pemahaman membaca mahasiswa dalam hal pemahaman literal dan pemahaman interpretatif. Hal itu dibuktikan dengan nilai rata-rata dari siklus I adalah 68, 47. Itu diklasifikasikan sebagai cukup kemudian ditingkatkan menjadi 81, 20. Hal itu tergolong baik pada siklus II. Mereka lebih tinggi dari nilai rata-rata dari tes diagnostik yaitu 58, 40 yang tergolong kurang. Oleh karena itu, ada peningkatan pemahaman membaca mahasiswa dalam hal pemahaman literal menyimpulkan dengan makna kata dan ide-ide utama dan pemahaman interpretatif menyimpulkan kesimpulan.Kata Kunci: Penyelidikan, Membaca, Pemahaman, Metode.

Abstract

The research aimed to find out the improvement of students’ reading comprehension in terms of finding main ideas and meaning of words at the students’ of SMPN 4 Libureng in the 2012/2013 academic year. This research used A Classroom Action Research that consisted two cycles. The sample of this research consisted of 22 students, those consisted of six women and twelve men .The researcher obtained the data by using reading test and observation sheet. The results of the students reading test in cycle I and cycle II had significantly different scores.  There was a better increase of gains by students at the end of action in second cycle. In cycle I, the students’ achievement of main ideas was 6,09, but after evaluation in cycle II the students’ reading comprehension become 7,62.The other hand the students’ meaning of words was improved too from cycle I to cycle II, whereas in the students’ achievement of meaning of words was 6,13, but after evaluation in cycle II the students’ achievement become 7,74. From the findings indicated that there was improvement in the students’ reading comprehension from cycle I to cycle II, whereas in cycle I students’ achievement reading comprehension was 23,81, but after evaluating in cycle II the students’ reading comprehension became 25,69. While the standard target achievement KKM 66. From these findings, the researcher made conclusion that by using an eclectic approach could improve the students’ reading comprehension achievement.   Key Word: Eclectic Approach, Improve, Reading ComprehensionPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui peningkatan siswa dalam hal pemahaman membaca mencari ide-ide utama dan arti dari kata-kata di siswa SMPN 4 Libureng pada tahun akademik 2012/2013. Penelitian ini menggunakan Penelitian Tindakan Kelas yang terdiri dua siklus. Sampel penelitian ini terdiri dari 22 siswa, mereka terdiri dari enam perempuan dan dua belas orang peneliti dan diperoleh data dengan menggunakan uji membaca dan lembar observasi. Hasil tes membaca siswa pada siklus I dan siklus II memiliki nilai yang berbeda secara signifikan. Ada peningkatan yang lebih baik dari prestasi siswa pada akhir tindakan dalam siklus kedua. Pada siklus I, pencapaian siswa pada ide utama adalah 6,09, tapi setelah evaluasi pada siklus II siswa memahami bacaan menjadi 7,62.The sisi lain makna dari kata-kata siswa itu ditingkatkan juga dari siklus I ke siklus II , sedangkan di siswa pencapaian arti kata-kata itu 6,13, tapi setelah evaluasi pada siklus II prestasi siswa menjadi 7,74. Dari temuan menunjukkan bahwa ada peningkatan pemahaman membaca siswa dari siklus I ke siklus II, sedangkan pada siklus I siswa prestasi pemahaman membaca adalah 23, 81, tapi setelah dievaluasi pada siklus II membaca pemahaman siswa menjadi 25, 69. Sementara standar pencapaian target KKM 66. Dari temuan ini, peneliti membuat kesimpulan bahwa dengan menggunakan pendekatan eklektik bisa meningkatkan prestasi pemahaman membaca siswa. Abstract

Controversial and Unresolved Topic Method (Cut) To Improve the Students’ Speaking Ability at Second   Grade of SMA Muhammadiyah 7 Makassar. The objective of the research will find out the improvement students’ speaking ability by Controversial and Unresolved Topic (CUT) Method at the second grade of SMA Muhammadiyah 7 Makassar. This research will use Classroom Action Research that consisted two cycles. The research population was the second grade of SMA Muhammadiyah 7 Makassar academic year 2013/2014. The sample of this research consisted of 24 students. The researcher will obtain the data by using speaking test and observation sheet. The reason why this research focuses on the controversial and unresolved topic method was that it will give the students motivation to study English special in English skill. Besides that this method will make the students become more confident to express their ideas, more friendship among others, and all the students can connect a good atmosphere.

Abstract

Willingness to communicate (WTC) has important roles in students’ learning. It refers to the personal variable which can affect students’ learning process and at the last stage affect students’ speaking achievement. The purpose of the research was to find out the willingness to communicate as a students’ personality through students’ response in scoring system of designed questionnaire and effectiveness of information gap technique as a teaching method to improve students’ speaking achievement. The population of this research was 368 students from 10 classes at the second semester, English Department, at the Muhammadiyah University of Makassar. This research was quasi-experimental. The sample was taken by purposive sampling. The total sample was 24 for the experimental group and 19 for the control group. Data collected from two groups of students, experimental and the control group that had been analyzed by three raters and tabulated in the table of students’ score was tabulated in Excel 2007 (Windows program and analyzed in IBM statistical package and service solution (SPPSS 20). The findings showed that there was a significant difference between pretest and post test of the experimental group while the control group that was not the significant difference between pretest and posttest. It proved that Information gap technique based on WTC improved the students’ speaking achievement.

Abstract

This research aimed to explain about how is the Improving the Students’ Reading Comprehension Through Carousel Brainstorm Strategy At The Second Students Of MA (Madrasah Aliyah) Al-Hikma Kab. Mamuju Utara. The problem statement of the research were how is the improvement of the students’ literal comprehension through Carousel Brainstorm Strategy. The researcher used a Classroom Action Research (CAR). The researcher conducted two cycles, where each cycle consisted of four meetings. It employed descriptive test as instrument. A number of subjects of the research were 47 students in the second class of MA (Madrasah Aliyah) Al-Hikma. The researcher took real data from the school to know the students’ reading comprehension. In term of collecting data the researcher used category proposed by Gay (1981) to grade students’ achievement in reading comprehension during the research sessions. The research findings indicated that Carousel Brainstorm Strategy can improve of the students’ reading comprehension where the means score of D-Test (51.1%) and after evaluation in cycles I and II, the means scores improvement from (68.1%) in the first cycle and (78.2%) in the second cycle. Thus, the improvement of the student’s reading comprehension from D-Test to cycle I (33.26%) and cycle I to cycle II (14.83%) and from D-Test to cycle II  (53.03%) While the standard target achievement KKM 75. Based on the score in cycle II the score categorized as Good. It can be stated that  the students’ reading comprehension at the second grade students of  MA (Madrasah  Aliyah) Al-Hikma was a low level before the test in the first cycle and the position of reading comprehension moved into a high level after the test in the second cycle.

Abstract

Kampanye Pelestarian Permainan Tradisional Anak (bugis Makassar) propinsi Sulawesi Selatan. Ketidaklestariannya permainan tradisional anak (Bugis Makassar) seperti; maccukke’/accangke, bulang-bulang/patte’-patte’, mallogo, mangasing/asing-asing, tander-tander/himen-himen, massanto’, maddende/dende-dende ma’boy/a’gebo’, lambasena/lompat karet, beklan/bekkel dan maggoli’/kelereng. Ini menjadi bagian besar tanggung jawab para pemuda untuk terus mengkampanyekan tentang tradisi rakyat Bugis Makassar yang mempunyai filosofi hidup didalamnya. Pengusul melihat bahwa Permainan tradisional sangat perlu dilaksanakan secara sustainability atau berkelanjutan, sehingga pada nantinya anak-anak mampu memahami dan mengaplikasikan nilai-nilai edukatif yang berdampak pada pengembangan karakter mereka. Tahap pelaksanaan dalam program pengabdian Masyarakat IbM Kampanye Pelestarian permainan tradisional anak menggunakan konsep Metode School Visit, dimana tim relawan dari setiap komunitas mitra akan bersama-sama memformulasikan beberapa sekolah TK dan SMP di yang ada di kota Makassar dan Parepare. Kedua Mitra mempresentasikan tentang permainan tradisional bugis Makassar dan mengajak siswa siswi untuk mempraktekkan permainan tradisonal. Selain itu, kedua tim juga akan melakuka seminar tentang “permainan tradisional bugis makassar”, dalam seminar ini pesertanya adalah guru, orangtua siswa, dan murid. Target luaran yang diharapkan seperti, 1) Memperkenalkannya kembali kepada anak tentang permainan tradisional anak (Bugis Makassar) Sulawesi Selatan. 2) Melatih interaksi sosial anak, dengan melalui permainan tradisional anak akan belajar berinteraksi sosial dengan teman-temannya, hal ini tentunya sangat baik bagi perkembangan anak. 3) Membangun Gerakan Sosial secara massif dalam menjaga pelestarian permainan tradisional anak. 4) Menanamkan nilai – nilai filosofi permainan tradisional kepada anak, sehingga berdampak pada perkembangan karakter diri anak.

Abstract

The objective of the study is to find out whether the use of Fix-Up Strategy enhance the students’ in reading comprehension in terms of literal and interpretative comprehensions. The research method is pre-experimental design with pre-test and post-test as quantitative research. The population of the research was students of SMP Unismuh Makassar. The total number of sample was 22 students which chosen by using purposive sampling. The instrument used to collect data in reading comprehension was reading text (narrative text).

Abstract

This research aims to know the teachers’ perspective in teaching vocabulary by using story technique at Madrasah Tsanawiyah Negeri 2 Enrekang. The research methodology of this research is descriptive qualitative. The technique of collecting data is interview, and record perspectives of the teachers about the using of story technique. Data analysis are transcribing, classifying and concluding. The result of this research found the good perspective of the teachers’ about using story technique in teaching vocabulary at Madrasah Tsanawiyah Negeri 2 Enrekang, especially the used of story techniques really helped teachers in delivering learning material and helped students more easily understand the material presented in the learning process, Story techniques can arouse students' curiosity, instill good educational values for students and can develop students' imaginations. Story technique is often used for some purposes like improving the student’s understanding of the vocabulary material, creating a relaxing and exciting environment of learning and teaching, and creating a good interaction between the class member.

Abstract

The researcher aims to determine the effectiveness of using flashcards in improving students' English vocabulary by conducting pre-experimental research and making 7th grade students at SMP Negeri 2 Galesong Utara as the research location and taking samples with a total population of 214 7th grade students while the sample used was 25 students. The process of data collection using pre-test and post-test used multiple choice by analyzing data using SPSS. The results of this study found that the use of flashcard media in the learning process to improve students' English vocabulary that considered effective based on the data obtained where the mean score in the pre-test 44,28 and the post-test 71,60. It can be seen that the mean score of the post-test is higher than the mean score of the pre-test. And it is proven again from the results of the analysis of the "paired sample test" using SPSS with a significance value of 0.000 <0.05. Based on the decision making is if the significance value is < 0.05, then H0 is rejected and H1 is accepted. Based on these results, it can be concluded that flashcard media is effective in improving students' English vocabulary.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to identify the kinds of illocutionary utterances the teacher employs during instruction. This study's design is a qualitative one that use the descriptive approach. The dialogues that the teacher conducted while teaching and learning were the source of the research data. The research instrument was observation and recording, following which the researcher did a transcription and the researcher himself collected, processed and presented the data acquired in this study. The results demonstrate that the teacher engages in four different sorts of illocutionary acts: directive, representational, expressive, and commissive. The teacher employs 68 instances of this illocutionary behavior type. Directive was employed 32 times (47.05%), representational 16 times (23.52%), expressive 13 times (19.11), and commissive 3 times (4.41%) out of the 68 utterances. During the teaching and learning process, teachers often carry out directives. Because the use of directives in the teaching and learning process can be used to manage and control student behavior and activities. By using questioning, the teacher encourages more active participation from the class.
