Abstract

Collocational competence plays a critical role in shaping the fluency and naturalness of second language use, yet it remains a persistent challenge for learners in foreign language contexts. This study examined the development of collocational knowledge among Indonesian university students from non-English majors through a six-week instructional intervention combining noticing tasks, matching exercises, and productive writing activities. Using a quasi-experimental pre-test and post-test design with 20 participants, results revealed significant gains in collocational competence, with the group mean rising from 43.2 to 79.6 and a very large effect size (d = 4.36). Learners with the weakest initial performance showed the greatest improvements, and overall variance decreased, indicating the equalizing impact of explicit collocational instruction. These findings suggest that collocational competence is highly responsive to focused and contextualized learning, even in contexts with limited exposure to authentic input. The study contributes empirical support for integrating collocational instruction into EFL programs for non-English majors and highlights the pedagogical potential of phraseological approaches to vocabulary teaching in higher education.

Abstract

This study investigates the relationship between sociolinguistic competence and communicative engagement among Indonesian EFL learners. Using a mixed-methods design, the research combined quantitative analysis of scenario-based questionnaire responses with interpretive commentary of learners’ written answers. Descriptive results showed that students demonstrated strong pragmatic awareness in authority-related contexts but more variability in informal and ambiguous situations. Reliability analysis indicated that sociolinguistic competence is multidimensional rather than uniform. Inferential statistics revealed a moderate positive correlation between sociolinguistic competence and communicative engagement, while qualitative analysis highlighted the influence of cultural scripts of deference, harmony, and accountability on learners’ communicative choices. These findings underscore that willingness to communicate is not determined solely by linguistic ability but is shaped by sociocultural orientations and identity negotiations. Pedagogically, the study calls for greater integration of pragmatic and sociolinguistic instruction in EFL classrooms, emphasizing both authority-based and peer-oriented interactions. The study concludes that fostering pragmatic awareness within cultural contexts can enhance learners’ confidence and participation, supporting their development as contextually responsive communicators.

Abstract

This research aimed to find out whether the effect of using Wattpad in Improving students’ Reading Comprehension or not at Tenth Grade Students of SMA Negeri 9 Makassar. This research used quantitative research with a pre-experimental approach. The researcher gave pre-test to students, and then the researcher gave the students’ treatment using Wattpad Application. After treatment is given, researcher gives the students’ post-test. The population in this study were students of the class X SMA Negeri 9 Makassar. The sample of this research was the students of the class X.7, included 29 students. The sample was taken by Purposive Sampling. The result showed that the t-test value was higher than the t-table value. The t-test value of reading comprehension in terms of Literal Comprehension was higher than the t-table (14.75>2.04841), and the t-test value in terms of Interpretative comprehension was higher than the t-table (15.17>2.04841). The t-test of the indicators in the students' Reading Comprehension skills t-test produced a result that was higher than the t-table (29.92>2.04841). It was concluded that the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (H1) was accepted. It means that using the Wattpad application was effective to improve students’ reading comprehension.

Abstract

The aims of this research was to find out How Effective the use of English Cartoon Film in Improving Students' Vocabulary mastery. This research conducted by used Quantitative method with a Pre-Experimental design with one group of pre-test and post-test. This research population consisted of eighth grade students at SMP Negeri 2 Mappakasunggu, with the research sample being Class VIII C, which consisted of 23 Students, selected by purposive sampling technique. The data from this research gathered through the supply of pre-test and post-test materials to be utilized as a comparison to find out how the improvement of students' vocabulary mastery before and after using English cartoon film with as a teaching/learning media. The results of this research revealed that using English cartoon films as a media of teaching and learning is effective for students in eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 2 Mappakasunggu in improving their vocabulary mastery. This is demonstrated by how much the student's grades have improved. where the pre-test mean score of students is 42.17 and the post-test mean score of students is 70.43, indicating a 67.01% increase in students in this research. Furthermore, data analysis results show that the value of t-test (13.57) is greater than the value of t-table (2.074). Based on these findings, it is possible to conclude that there is a significant difference in students' "vocabulary mastery before and after they use English cartoon film as a media of teaching and learning process," demonstrating that English cartoon film are effective for improving students' vocabulary mastery..

Abstract

This research aimed at findings (1) Students’ perceptions on the use of WhatsApp as a mobile learning platform in learning English; (2) The challenges faced by students of Madrasah Aliyah Swasta DDI CITTA in using WhatsApp as a mobile learning platform in learning English. The methodology of this research was descriptive quantitative and qualitative method.The population is 118 students at Madrasah Aliyah Swasta DDI CITTA.The sample consist of 30 students that took randomly at Madrasah Aliyah Swasta DDI CITTA. The instruments used in this research were questionnaire and interview. The findings shows that from 20 items on questionnaire, disagree and strongly disagree has the highest percentage on positive statement. Disagree had a percentage of 30-63% and strongly disagree had a percentage of 26,67-60%.Then, agree and strongly agree had the highest percentage on negative statements. Agree had a of 20-73% and strongly agree had a percentage of of 20-70%. Meanwhile interview results show that there were three challenges faced by students in using WhatsApp as a mobile learning platform namely, students did not understand the material, bad network and internet data. Based on the data obtained, the researcher concludes that students gave negative perceptions on the use of WhatsApp as a mobile learning platform in learning English.
