Abstract

Conversation is one of the essential parts of communication that needs skills and knowledge between participants. Many errors happen while people are in conversation. The crucial factors are conversation more spontaneously and many aspects influencing communication. Therefore, this study aims to reveal the process of conversation using theories of conversation analysis repair and adjacency pairs by Brian Paltridge (2012) in NBC News Interview with Vladimir Putin. The documentation method is used to collect the data. The data source is collected from an English transcription interview between Keir Simmons and Vladimir Putin accessed on the official website NBC News. Qualitative content analysis is used as a technique for analysing the data. The results of this study show 39 data of repairs, 32 self-initiated self-repair, 2 self-initiated other-repair, and 5 other-initiated self-repairs. As for adjacency pairs, show a total of 52 data, 28 questions-answers, 16 assessment-agreement, 5 request-agreement, 2 blame-denial, 1 offer-acceptance, and 1 closing-leaving. In conclusion, the interview ran well despite using different languages in conversation and limited times. Furthermore, the interviewee's institutional background influenced the process of interview.

Abstract

Introducing reading text from young learners should be supported by appropriate facilities and resources adequate infrastructure. Learning Reading should be managed in such a way as to create meaningful and enjoyable learning activities. The use of big book as a medium of learning is one of the efforts to understand the reading text for young learners. This research aims at knowing the application of Big Book in teaching student‟s reading comprehension of the second grade students of elementary school. The research design in this study is qualitative approach. The data are collected by using observation, interview, and documentation. Meanwhile, techniques of analzying data are data reduction, data display, and drawing conclusion. The subject of the research is the second grade students, which consists of 13 female and 7 male. The researcher is successful to use big book to teach reading comprehension. The students feel happy and interested when using big book. The researcher asks the students to read aloud the reading text individually and in a group, and then gives questions about the content of the text. Students are able to understand the reading text using big book. Based on the findings of research, the researcher also recommends conducting further research on using of Big Book.

Abstract

The aim of this community service activity is to provide training for teachers at SDN Kalianget Timur X Sumenep, regarding the use of google meet and also google drive. The methods used are online training, and online and offline mentoring. The isntruments are Questionnaire and Documents. The descriptive analysis is use to analyze the data. The results of this community service activity are 75% of teachers are able to operate google meet and also 65% of teachers have used the google drive application in file storage and 45% of teachers have tried using the google form application to make quizzes/tests.

Abstract

The purposes of the study are to describe the use of Literature Circles in the classroom using jam board media and to know the students’ responses to Young Adult Literature (YAL) using jam board. This study is qualitative research. The data collection method is observation and interview. Using a jam board, the researcher observes the use of literature circles in the classroom. Meanwhile, the researcher interviews the teacher and the students about their perception of the use of literature circles in the classroom using a jam board. Data analysis uses three steps, namely, data reduction, data displays, and drawing conclusions. The participants are 20 students of secondary school. The result shows that there are four roles in literature circles, namely, discussion leader, summarizer, question writer, word wizard, culture collector, and passage master. The students’ responses show that they are active in reading class because Jam Board is interesting media. They also could understand the text well since they work in groups and have their own roles. In addition to addressing the requirements of many students and providing them with responsibility and participation in the class, literature circles can be a useful instrument for increasing motivation by appealing to their reading interests because the literary text is frequently chosen by the group from a selection of adequately leveled options offered by the teacher.

Abstract

The research objectives are describing the use of the CIRC (Cooperative Integrated Reading Comprehension) method to teach reading and finding the strengths and weaknesses of CIRC to teach reading to young learners. This research is applied in qualitative research with a descriptive analysis model. The data collecting is done by observation, interview, and documentation. In analyzing data, it is done by data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing and verification. The result of this research shows the implementation of CIRC Method to teach reading are: (1) partner reading, (2) story grammar and related writing (3) word out loud, (4) word meaning, (5) story retell, and (6) spelling. Meanwhile, the advantages of CIRC method in teaching reading are first, the students are easy to understand the material. Second, the students have the motivation to learn to read more. Third, the situation of the class is fun. Fourth, students pay more attention and are more focused on learning. Besides, the challenge of CIRC method in teaching reading is sometimes the students are confused by the teacher’s explanation and instruction.

Abstract

This study aims to know the implementation of Jigsaw Tasks by using Scrambled Sentences in teaching reading descriptive text and its strengths and weaknesses. This is qualitative research. The data are collected using observation and interviews. Meanwhile, the data analysis uses three steps: reduction data, display data, and data verification. The results show that in the implementation of jigsaw tasks by using scrambled sentences, the students pay attention and listen to the explanation of the teacher during the teaching-learning process. They rearrange the jumble sentences card based on the pictures by adhering to the flannel board. The advantages are it could increase the student’s vocabulary mastery, and the jigsaw task technique with scramble sentences could motivate the students to understand the descriptive text and make the students focus on the material given. Besides, the students are active, enthusiastic, and enjoy learning to read descriptive text by using jigsaw tasks with scrambled sentences The disadvantages are the students make noise. Hence, his method is recommended for all teachers to use for teaching reading descriptive text and for future research to conduct the same research but in different fields.

Abstract

Reading achievement and willingness to get involved in reading activities among young learners are affected by their reading motivation and the texts they select for reading. Since there is software that makes stories readable on personal devices, using digital stories in the classroom is one of the strategies to promote reading skills and students' motivation to read. The purposes of this research are to know the implementation of digital stories in teaching reading to young learners and to know the advantages and disadvantages of the use of digital stories in teaching reading to young learners. This research uses a qualitative method. To collect the data, the researcher uses observation and interviews. Meanwhile, to analyze the data, the researcher uses data reduction, data display, and drawing conclusions. The results show that students can use digital stories easily. They click the link given by the teacher and choose the stories they like on the website. Some interesting features can be added to story content while they are reading the text, such as interactive exercises, quizzes, and discussions that are not available in the printed text. The strengths are that digital stories are used as an interesting learning tool, particularly for students who are accustomed to technology, and help young readers enhance their literacy skills and motivation. The weaknesses are the internet connection is sometimes unstable so the students are difficult to access the stories and no quiz menu in the website. It makes the students not challenged to read it at home
