Abstract

The issue of maintaining the Sundanese Brebes language in the Sundanese community in Brebes Regency was raised because the existence of the Sundanese Brebes language is potentially threatened economically, socially, and politically by Javanese, Indonesian, and foreign languages. Previous studies suggest that monolingual communities are vulnerable to switch to languages with higher political power, whereas established multilingual communities tend to survive. However, this is different from the Sundanese Brebes language. The purpose of this paper is to examine the pattern of Sundanese Brebes maintenance based on heterogeneity. The number of respondents in this study was 400. The results of the analysis showed that monolingual communities type 1 and 2 maintain Sundanese Brebes language more active than multilingual communities type 3 and 4. In the monolingual community, the presence of Javanese and Indonesian languages with dominant economic and political power did not influence significantly language maintenance. In contrast, the maintenance of Sundanese Brebes in the multilingual community is more passive. The maintenance of Sundanese Brebes still occurs because of the strong identity of Sundanese Brebes. This study is expected to contribute to the study of language maintenance patterns in several community characteristics.

Abstract

There have been quite a lot of studies on the Samin community with various approaches. This research aims to explain the symbolic meaning and essence of Samin's teachings/stitutors using the concept of signs as stated by Saussure and semantics as explained by Pateda using the literature study method. The data was processed using steps as offered by Miles Haberman: data reduction, data recording, and inference. The results of this research are (1) Samin's teachings contained in angger-angger (pratikel, pangucap, and lakonana) are still being maintained, (2) social changes have begun to be discovered, (3) using ngoko language in every domain, (4) symbolic meaning of the three anggers: do good to others, do not indulge in lust, be honest, one word with deeds, pay attention to property rights; (because) the essence of life is one, forever, and death is essentially just "changing clothes", (5) the symbolic meaning and essence of certain words/situations in the Samin community as a distinguishing characteristic from communities outside Samin, such as ibu bumi, bapak angkasa, rukun(an), anak, turun, dan siji.

Abstract

In the field of comparative historical linguistics, examining language kinship can illuminate the relationships between languages in a particular region and their evolutionary paths over time. Sundanese and Balinese are two prominent languages that originated in different areas of Indonesia, yet both are part of the Austronesian language family. This study aims to investigate the kinship relationship between Sundanese and Balinese by employing lexicostatistics and phonemic correspondence techniques, providing a structured approach to analyzing their linguistic connections. Data collection was conducted through interviews, focusing on 200 Swadesh vocabulary words that encompass basic terms. The findings reveal a kinship degree of 41% between Sundanese and Balinese, indicating that they diverged approximately 2,058 years ago. Several phonemic correspondences were identified, including /a ~ ə/, /ɣ ~ ə/, /d~ r/, and  /a,u/ ~ o/. The analysis further unveiled sound change processes such as lenition, merger, and splitting. Notably, Sundanese appears to be more closely aligned with Proto-Austronesian (PAN) than Balinese, as it has preserved certain phonemes, including /b/, /d/, and /h/, without significant alterations. These findings support the conclusion that Sundanese and Balinese belong to the same language family classification.
