Abstract

Abstract In order to implementing the 5 health protocols (washing hands, wearing masks, keeping distance, staying away from crowds and reducing mobility) during the current COVID-19 pandemic, the Chancellor of Cenderawasih University issued a circular stating that hand washing equipment on campus must be available as soon as possible and in sufficient quantity. Responding to the circular, the Faculty of Engineering, University of Cenderawasih formed a team to produce 7 units of Portable Wash Basin. The seven units are placed in the office of the Chancellor of Cenderawasih University and the Dean of Engineering Faculty. When producing Portable Wash Basin, the team involved several students. Student involvement is deemed necessary, so that students can produce their own Portable Wash Basin. The ability to produce these Portable Wash Basin is expected to be a driving force for students to become entrepreneurs. Abstrak Dalam rangka melaksanakan protokol kesehatan 5M (mencuci tangan, memakai masker, menjaga jarak, menjauhi kerumunan dan mengurangi mobilitas) pada masa pandemi COVID-19 sekarang ini, Rektor UniversitasCenderawasih menerbitkan surat edaran yang menyatakan bahwa alat pencuci tangan di lingkungan kantor universitas harus tersedia dalam jumlah yang cukup. Menanggapi surat edaran tersebut, maka Fakultas Teknik Universitas Cenderawasih membentuk suatu tim untuk memproduksi 7 unit alat cuci tangan Wastafel Portable. Ketujuh unit tersebut diletakkan di sekitar lingkungan kantor Rektorat Universitas Cenderawasih dan Dekanat Fakultas Teknik. Pada saat memproduksi alat cuci tangan tersebut, tim melibatkan beberapa mahasiswa. Keterlibatan mahasiswa dipandang perlu, agar selanjutnya mahasiswa yang bersangkutan dapat memproduksi sendiri Wastafel Portable tersebut. Kemampuan untuk memproduksi alat tersebut diharapkan dapat menjadidorongan agar mahasiswa mau berwirausaha.

Abstract

This study aims to: (1) make briquettes from rice husk and straw with some mixture proportions, (2) determine the heating value (HHV) and the compressive strength of the produced briquettes (3) determine the physical properties of the produced briquettes through the proximate analysis and determine the best briquettes mixture, and (4) know the possibility of using rice husk and straw as briquette fuel for steam boilers. The produced briquettes contained 85% of rice husk charcoal and straw, and adhesive subtance consisting of clay (10%) and strach (5%). The briquettes were made with five mixture proportions with an average mass ratio of 260 gramsduce briquettes briquette type E as the best. The examination of heating value reveals that the higher the percentage of staw in the mixture, the lower the briquette heating value will be; while the testing of compressive strength reveals that the higher the percentage of straw in the mixture, the higher the briquette compressive strength will be. Based on the proximate analysis, it is found that generally the produced briquettes have fulfilled the briquette standard quality. The results of calculations analysis reveal that there is a possibility to use briquettes made of rice husks and straw as steam boilers the ratio between the fuel mass flow rate and vapor mass flow rate is 0.231.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis karakteriktik briket dari arang limbah tempurung kelapa dan serbuk gergaji kayu merbau sebagai energi biomassa. Metode penelitian meliputi pembuatan arang tempurung kelapa dan arang serbuk gergaji kayu merbau, pembuatan cetakan briket sarang tawon, pembuatan briket pada komposisi A, B, C, D, dan E masing-masing pada komposisi arang tempurung kelapa dan arang serbuk gergaji kayu merbaupada perbandingan 100% : 0%; 75% : 25%; 50% :50%; 25% : 75%; dan 0% : 100%. Hasil analisis nilai kalor briket pada variasi komposisi menunjukkan bahwa semakin besar persentase campuran arang tempurung kelapa akan semakin meningkatkan nilai kalor briket yang dihasilkan. Hasil pengujian analisis proksimat briket menunjukkan bahwa pengaruh penambahan persentase campuran arang serbuk gergaji kayu merbau akan meningkatkan kadar abu briket yang dihasilkan.

Abstract

Karbonisasi biomassa atau yang lebih dikenal dengan pengarangan adalah suatu proses untuk menaikkan nilai kalor biomassa dan dihasi;kan pembakaran yang bersih dengan sedikit asap. Penelitian ini akan mengolah limbah serutan kayu dan tempurung menjadi bahan bakar briket dengan proses karbonisasi dengan menggunakan tabung kompressor bekas berkapasitas 25 liter. Alat yang digunakan untuk proses pengarangan adalah tabung reaktor yang dirancang dengan mempertimbangkan lubang aliran asap, lubang pengaturan aliran udara, dan saluran pembakaran. Proses pengarangan dilakukan dengan pengaturan pembukaan lubang oksigen mulai dari 30o sampai 180o. Pembuatan briket dilakukan dengan mencampur serbuk arang serutan kayu linggua sebanyak 60 %, serbuk arang tempurung sebanyak 30 %, dan perekat sebanyak 10 % lalu diaduk hingga merata. Proses pencetakan briket dilakukan dengan alat cetak briket yang dilengkapi dengan dongkrak hidrolik. Briket yang dihasilkan dari proses pencetakan kemudian dikeringkan dalam oven pengering dengan temperatur 60 oC selama 24 jam. Briket yang telah dikeringkan tersebut kemudian diuji dengan pengujian proksimate untuk mengetahui sifat-sifat fisis briket dan nilai kalornya. Dari hasil pengujian proksimate diperoleh bukaan katup terbaik adalah bukaan katup 150o karena memiliki kadar abu terendah (4,97%), kadar volatile matter terendah (35,80%), kadar fixed carbon tertinggi (52,27), dan nilai kalor tertinggi (5911 cal/gr)

Abstract

The type of drying device known as a hybrid dryer is a tool that harnesses solar energy and the heat generated by a biomass fuel-powered heat exchanger. This study was conducted to assess the performance of the hybrid dryer by analyzing the parameters of the device itself and the dried material. The research was carried out experimentally using a solar collector and a biomass furnace (as a heat exchanger) to heat the air. The solar collector used consists of 0.35 mm thick, black-painted zinc, coated with 5 mm thick glass, and installed at a 20-degree angle. The heat exchanger pipe used has a diameter of 1.25 inches and is made of galvanized pipe. The tested sample is corn seeds with an initial moisture content of about 24.6%. The experimental results show that in the drying process using a solar dryer, the initial moisture content of 24.8% was successfully reduced to 14% at 5.50 h (rack 1), 6.50 h (rack 2) and 7.00 h (rack 3) with a thermal efficiency of 24.25%. Meanwhile, in the hybrid drying process, the required time is approximately 5.00 h (rack 1), 5.50 h (rack 2) and 6.00 h (rack 3), with a efficiency of the drying equipment used is 21.048±5.690% (hybrid) and 22.706±6.437% (solar).

Abstract

Pengelasan SMAW, merupakan metode umum dalam pengelasan busur listrik, menjadi fokus penelitian menggunakan pelat baja karbon rendah dengan variasi diameter elektroda. Tujuan utamanya adalah mengevaluasi kekuatan hasil pengelasan serta kekerasan permukaan zona spesimen. Dengan menggunakan pendekatan eksperimental, pelat baja karbon rendah dipotong berbentuk alur V, dan disambung menggunakan las listrik SMAW. Data yang dikumpulkan melibatkan uji Tarik dan pengujian kekerasan di tiga zona pengelasan. Hasil menunjukkan bahwa panas yang dihasilkan arus listrik berdampak signifikan pada perubahan kekuatan dan kekerasannya. Kekuatan tarik tertinggi tercapai pada pengelasan dengan arus 120 A, dan nilai kekerasan bervariasi di masing-masing zona. Pada base metal (BM), tingkat kekerasan tertinggi pada pengelasan dengan arus 80 A dan elektroda berdiameter 2,6 mm. Sebaliknya, zona HAZ menunjukkan tingkat kekerasan maksimal spesimen dengan arus 120 A dan elektroda berdiameter 3,2 mm. Daerah weld metal (WM) mencapai tingkat kekerasan tertinggi spesimen dengan arus listrik 120 A dan elektroda berdiameter 3,2 mm.

Abstract

Corn cobs, an abundant agricultural waste, represent a promising alternative energy source when converted into briquettes. This study aimed to characterize corn cob briquettes and determine the optimal adhesive type and concentration for enhanced performance. Charcoal was produced from corn cobs via pyrolysis in repurposed oil drums, then ground and sieved through a 60-mesh screen. The resultant charcoal was combined with either starch or sago starch adhesives at concentrations of 7.5%, 10%, 12.5%, and 15% and subsequently molded into honeycomb briquettes using a 4-inch diameter mold with 16 perforations, fabricated from galvanized iron pipes and operated with a hydraulic jack. Proximate analysis indicated moisture levels of 5.37–6.71%, ash levels of 30.64–39.16%, volatile matter levels of 20.61–23.07%, fixed carbon proportions of 32.53–42.44%, and calorific values between 2893 and 3727 kcal/kg. A Water Boiling Test conducted with 1 liter of water demonstrated that briquettes incorporating 7.5% sago starch adhesive achieved boiling within 36 minutes, indicating superior combustion efficiency. These findings confirm the potential of corn cob briquettes as a renewable energy source and underscore the critical role of adhesive formulation in optimizing biomass fuel performance.

Abstract

ABSTRACT: The quality of groundwater is significantly influenced by the mineral composition of the surrounding rocks and soil in the aquifer. High concentrations of minerals, particularly iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn), can cause discoloration typically a yellow-brown hue and an unpleasant taste in the water. This study aims to evaluate the effect of different filter media arrangements in a filtration column on the reduction of Fe, Mn, and turbidity levels in well water. The natural filter media used include sand, gravel, palm fiber, and activated carbon, arranged within a filtration column model. Water samples were taken from dug wells in Sowi 2 Village and a drilled well in Susweni, Manokwari Regency. Initial characterization of the water samples included assessments of odor, color, turbidity, and Fe and Mn concentrations. Results indicate that during the rainy season, well water from Sowi 2 meets clean water quality standards based on pH, turbidity, and Fe and Mn content. However, the drilled well in Susweni exceeds acceptable limits in terms of color and pH. Filtration using the designed column and selected natural media effectively reduced Fe, Mn, and turbidity. Turbidity reduction reached 100% in both column A and B. Fe concentration was reduced by 78.53% in column A and 73.55% in column B. Mn concentration was reduced by 76% in column A and 65.45% in column B.

Abstract

This community service activity aims to introduce biomass stoves to communities in need, particularly those with abundant biomass waste. The biomass stove's performance has already been evaluated through prior research conducted on campus. This community service initiative will be carried out with the Berkat Rama farmer group in Bibiosi Village, a major corn production area near Cenderawasih University in Arso District, Keerom Regency. Based on preliminary site assessments, local farmers reported significant quantities of agricultural waste, specifically corn cobs, left after harvest. This waste has not been optimally utilized by farmers and is typically disposed of by burning. Motivated by this, our community service team from the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Cenderawasih University aims to introduce corn cob-fueled biomass stoves to the local community. The Community Service Program (PKM) was met with strong enthusiasm from participants, who actively engaged in the socialization session through to its conclusion. The community expressed a desire for more frequent activities of this kind to broaden their knowledge and skills, especially regarding appropriate technology applications. The final outcome of this community service is an increase in both knowledge and skills among members of the Berkat Rama farmer group, specifically in the fabrication and operation of the introduced biomass stoves. They also received training in operational safety for biomass stoves. The acquired knowledge and skills are expected to be applied and shared with other community members and farmers in the area.

Abstract

The application of corn shelling machine technology aims to increase the productivity of partner farmers in Bibiosi Village, Keerom Regency so that they can improve their welfare. The target to be achieved is the adoption of corn shelling technology which works mechanically by the target community, increasing corn shelling production and community income, as well as establishing intensive cooperation between Cenderawasih University as the producer and developer of appropriate technology, the community using the technology and the local government. The method used to achieve this goal is by providing a technological touch to the community in processing corn harvests so that corn production can be optimized through the mechanical shelling process of corn. Application of appropriate technology in the form of a corn shelling machine using a petrol motor with 5.5 HP power. Based on the performance test results, this corn shelling machine has a production capacity of 1000 kg/hour. This is expected to help corn farmers to produce shelled corn more quickly and save energy. The application of appropriate technology will have an impact on the welfare of the community in the community partnership program. Apart from that, the application of science and technology is a solution for farmer groups in building insight and mindset in society.
