Abstract

This study aims to find out the development of vocabulary mastery by using a story' retelling technique. The researchers used a quantitative method with a pre- experimental research design and used cluster random sampling. The sample of this research is class X MIPA Tahfidz, with 34 students. The instrument used is a vocabulary test (pretest and post-test) that aims to obtain data in this research. The results of the data analysis showed that with the use of story' retelling techniques, students' vocabulary mastery increased. It can be proven by the t test value was lower than P (0.000 ˂ 0.05), which means (H0) of this research was rejected and (H1) was accepted. Therefore, it is concluded that the use of the story' retelling technique can develop the vocabulary mastery of the tenth-grade students of SMAN 6 Wajo.

Abstract

The aims of this study are to determine the vocabulary mastery and the ability to translate of junior high school students in Pangkep also whether vocabulary knowledge and translation competence are linked. This study employed a quantitative approach. This article only contains the third research question. The data of this research was collected through a test. Cluster-stratified random sampling was used to obtain the sample. In this study, 108 seventh-grade students in Pangkep were recruited from three accredited schools: SMP 1 Pangkajene, SMP 3 Bungoro, and SMP 5 Bungoro. The Pearson correlation results for vocabulary mastery and translation ability at A-certified schools are 0.653, which is 0.61-0.80, indicating a high correlation. Pearson correlation -0.595 is in the interval 0.41-0.60 for accredited B schools so that the correlation is obtained, and 0.112 is in the interval 0.00-0.20 for accredited schools so that no correlation is found.

Abstract

The objective of this research was to find out whether or not the use of humor stories in teaching reading improves students’ reading comprehension. This research took place at MTs Negeri 1 Sidrap. The population of this research was the third-grade students of MTs Negeri 1 Sidrap. The researchers used cluster random sampling technique in selecting samples. These researchers used pre-experimental design. The instrument of this research was a reading test which administered as a pretest and posttest. Based on the result of mean score, the researchers found that the use of humor stories in teaching reading comprehension improves because it was found that the post-test score is higher than the pre-test (78.2 > 85.0). So, it can be concluded that the use of humor stories improves students reading at MTs Negeri 1 Sidrap academic year 2021/2022.

Abstract

This study aimed to identify the effectiveness of flashcards media strategy in improving young learners’ vocabulary in the 7.2 class of SMPN 30 Makassar as a sample of this study. The method of this study used a quantitative method and a pre-experimental research design. The instrument of this study was a vocabulary test. The given tests to the students were pre-test-post-test vocabulary tests. The tests contained 50 items of each digital and non-digital flashcards, those included 3 association flashcards which were Animal, Fruit, and Transportation. It was formulated in multiple-choice and matching items to find the words or picture meaning, true or false to identify the use of words in a sentence, and essay to write the words correctly. As the result of this study, the first null hypothesis (H01) was rejected and the first alternative hypothesis (Ha1) was accepted, the value of Sig. (2-tailed) P = 0.000 less than α = 0.05 was obtained for both pre-test-post-test of digital and paper flashcards media strategy. Otherwise, the second null hypothesis (H02) was accepted and the second alternative hypothesis (Ha2) was rejected, the value of Sig. (2-tailed) P = 1.000 higher than α = 0.05 was obtained for both post-test-post-test of digital and paper flashcards media strategy. To be concluded, the flashcards media strategy was effective to improve young learners’ vocabulary for both digital and paper flashcards media strategy. Both of them were equally effective to improve young learners’ vocabulary in the 7.2 class of SMPN 30 Makassar.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the level of students’ motivation for the use of Zoom application in learning English. A mixed-method design was adapted in this study. The population of this research was the students of SMP Islam Wasuponda in the academic year 2022/2023. Through the total sampling technique, there were 32 students in eighth grade were chosen to be the sample of this research. The instruments of this research were a questionnaire and an interview. The research findings showed that the use of the Zoom application was effective to increase students’ motivation in learning English. It was proved by the level of students’ motivation where there were 53% of 32 students got high level of motivation, 28% of 32 students got moderate level of motivation, and 19% of 32 students got low level of motivation. There were three causes of increased students’ motivation as follows: Zoom has some features, Zoom is easy to access, and Zoom makes the students more confident.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine students' interest in learning English. This study uses a quantitative method. The researchers chose class X MIA 1 SMA Negeri 1 Mowewe Kolaka Timur which consisted of 40 students. The research instrument is a questionnaire. The results showed that the general interest of students was a moderate category towards students interested in learning English. This is supported by the results of data analysis obtained from the questionnaire and types of interest. the results of the questionnaire interest have a moderate category. the type of manifester interest is included in the very strong category. The author concludes that the student's interest in learning English in class X MIA 1 is still low. Teachers must create a comfortable environment during the teaching and learning process of English.

Abstract

The objectives of the research are to describe the ideal teachers’ personality as perceived by students, to describe what is students’ motivation in learning English taught by teachers who have this ideal teachers’ personality and to describe a correlation between teacher personality perceived by students and students' learning motivation. This research was designed for descriptive methods with quantitative approaches. The participants of the research were 149 students from MAN 1 Makassar and 4 teachers. They were chosen by cluster random technique. The data were obtained through questionnaires, interviews, and observation. The result of the findings showed that the ideal teachers’ personalities as perceived by students were friendly with (93.95%) positive choice. It equals 139 students along with sincere (93.29%), polite (93.28%), patient (92.62%), good teaching skill or ability (91.95%), organized (89.27%), care or empathy (83.89%), cheerful (83.21%), creative (81.88%) and interesting (81.21%). The findings also showed that most of the motivation of students from MAN 1 Makassar City has motivation between very high, high and medium levels and were motivated by 10 different ideal teachers’ personality such as friendly, caring, organized and so on. On the other hand, there were still some students who have a negative assessment of their teacher. The findings also showed that there was a significant correlation between teachers’ personality and students’ motivation in learning English.

Abstract

This study’s goal was to identify the variations in listening strategies utilized by female and male students during the learning process. This research was conducted at SMP Negeri 1 Sungguminasa. To achieve the research objectives, this research was conducted using a comparative descriptive technique using a qualitative strategy. Students from SMP Negeri 1 Sungguminasa's class IX A made up the study population. The instruments employed in this study were questionnaire and interview. The collected research data were analyzed to describe the percentage, frequency and students’ statements in listening strategies. According to the findings, there are disparities in the listening strategies used by male and female students. The study findings revealed that 63% of female students used metacognitive, 68% cognitive, and 69% socio-affective strategies when listening, compared to 59% of male students who used metacognitive, 61% cognitive, and 37% socio-affective strategies.
