Abstract

Translation competence is a concept that everyone who would like to become a translator should know and understand. Moreover, novice translators or translation students need to achieve all translation competences if they desire to become professional translators. Thus, they must be taught about these translation competences. This paper is the result of a conceptual study, not an empirical one. It explores the literature on translation competences from Translation Studies scholars and adapts them for Indonesian novice translators to learn and achieve. This paper provides explanation, examples, and recommendations for translation students to accomplish translation competences. From the study, 13 translation competences are acquired and those are considered the most suitable with the recent situation of the translation industry in Indonesia. The number of these competences is a not a fixed one as it may decrease or increase in the future following the trends in the translation world. Keywords: translation competences, professional translators, novice translators, translation students

Abstract

Different types of social or cultural background, combined with a region or social status, go into the making of spoken or written discourse. One of the interesting spoken discourses to discuss is political interview. It often reveals the intention of political leaders’ way of speaking. While there are those who are subtle in their way of talking, there are also a few who do not, one of whom is the Philippines’ president, Rodrigo Roa Duterte. Known for his outspoken personality, he often states controversial things that influence his country and derive critics from various places. Using van Dijk’s (2004) framework, this study analyzes the macro and micro discursive strategies used by Duterte in delivering his views on other countries’ relations with the Philippines based on his most-watched English interview with Russia Today. The findings revealed that the macro strategies used by Duterte are positive self-presentation, negative other-presentation, and outside polarization. Meanwhile, the mostly micro discursive strategies used are implication, lexicalization, and example/illustration.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Dysphemism and euphemism expressions are frequently used in news texts, especially in hard news reporting on politics, conflicts, and tragedies. This study aims to analyze the change of dysphemism and euphemism expressions in Target Text (TT) Merdeka.com when they are translated from Source Text (ST) BBC.com. This study was descriptive qualitative research with linguistic data corpus and used critical discourse analysis proposed by Van Dijk in analyzing the meaning of each expression based on a semantic lexical approach. The data used in this study were corpus parallel data taken from 25 ST and 25 TT. The result of this study shows that dysphemism is mostly found in ST which is 65% while euphemism is only found in 35%. This study also reveals that some dysphemism and euphemism expressions change when they are translated to TT, namely euphemism into dysphemism by 23%, dysphemism into euphemism by 7.57%, deletion of dysphemism by 1.01%, and addition of dysphemism by 0.5%. Based on these results, it can be concluded that dysphemism is mostly found in ST and TT and both dysphemism and euphemism can change when they are translated into TT to be adjusted with the condition of the TT reader. Keywords: translation, euphemism, dysphemism, critical discourse analysis, corpus. Abstract

This study focuses on the translation procedures of biological terms in the “Sel” chapter in Biologi Edisi Kedelapan Jilid 1 and compares which procedures are the most precise in delivering meanings. The precision was analyzed based on the standard spelling using online KBBI; the conformance to the adopted word’s element writing rules using PUEBI (2016); and/or the componential analysis of meaning by Nida (1975). 10 translation procedures were used to translate 530 biological terms, i.e., in descending order, phonological translation, literal translation, transference, couplets or triplets, transposition, contextual conditioning, generalization, addition, descriptive translation, and particularization. Phonological translation was the most used as the terms were mostly cell parts, biochemical compounds, enzymes, biological processes, and biochemical processes. Literal translation, couplets or triplets, and generalization were more prone to causing imprecision with fatal consequences, while phonological translation and transference were not. In addition, 5 tendencies were found in the translation of the suffixes in biological terms, and special rules are necessary to regulate them.

Abstract

This research is a development of Low’s theory (2008) on assessing the quality of song lyric translation based on its translation method. The objective of the study is to discover the quality of rhyme and rhythm of song lyrics in the album We Love Disney which have been translated from English to Indonesian. Therefore, this study focuses on the quality of rhyme and rhythm of the translation because these elements are significant parts of the songs. Low’s theory has been applied in the present study to measure the song lyric translation quality using three translation methods: communicative, free, and semantic methods. The study employs a qualitative approach through comparative analysis. Data in the analysis are the song lyrics and their translation, and their rhymes and rhythms. The values of the rhyme and rhythm in the translations were obtained from the comparative analysis. The findings reveal that song lyrics translated using the communicative translation method have a higher rhyme value than the original song lyrics; in contrast, the lyrics translated using a free method yield a rhyme value with a considerable difference. The assessment of rhythm reveals that a song translated using the free method shows a substantial difference in value compared to translations using the other methods. KEYWORDS

Abstract

This paper reviews the theories used by new scholars in Translation Studies (TS) in Indonesia, to determine whether TS or translation theory there has followed the development of TS throughout the world. The study investigated the terms and authors/ scholars of TS found in the final papers of students at Universitas Indonesia and Universitas Negeri Jakarta between 2006 and 2016. Using a corpus tool, WordSmith Tools 6.0, keyword and cluster analyses were applied to search for terms and authors. Results show no significant progress in attainment of knowledge on TS. Indonesian students’ knowledge of translation theory seems to come primarily from the 1960s–1990s era.

Abstract

One of the difficulties in translating English legal texts derives from the uses of specialized language, also known as “legalese“. This research is a preliminary study which sets out to investigate the translation of English legalese into Indonesian in four open-accessed agreements. The data in English, which cover terms and expressions commonly used in legal documents, are classified into seven categories of legal English features. Their Indonesian translations are analysed by using Indonesian dictionaries to discover whether they can be considered as Indonesian legal language. The research finds that most English legalese terms and expressions studied are translated using common words and expressions, which can be looked up in the official monolingual Indonesian dictionary (Kamus Besar Bahasa Indonesia/KBBI) but cannot be found in an Indonesian law dictionary. Therefore, it is concluded that Indonesian legal language is not yet established.

Abstract

This research analyzes a corpus-based appraisal from the subsystem of attitude and graduation (force) with Kevin Kwan’s Rich People Problem and its Indonesian translated novel Masalah Orang Kaya as the main data. This study aims to see which type of attitude has the highest frequency, and whether or not there is a graduation change of the attitude in the translated novel. The method is descriptive qualitative, using appraisal theory, and AntPConc software. The result shows that all types of attitudes occur in the translated novel, and they are affect, graduation, and judgment. The most prominent attitude found in the excerpt is judgment with 29 in total, followed by affect with 21 in total, and appreciation with 18 in total. There are 16 types of judgment that change its graduation and 13 types of judgment do not. Out of 21 types of affect in the data, 7 changes in the graduation and 14 do not change. Lastly, out of 18 types of appreciation, 9 changes in graduation and the other 9 do not change. The novel shows that each character in the beginning of the story gives appreciation towards each other, in each situation, and materials mentioned in the story line.Penelitian membahas appraisal dari subsistem attitude dan graduation (force) berbasis korpus dengan data utama berupa novel bahasa Inggris berjudul Rich People Problem dan novel terjemahan bahasa Indonesia berjudul Masalah Orang Kaya.
