Abstract

Dental caries is an infectious disease caused by demineralization of enamel and dentin which is closely related to the consumption of cariogenic foods. Generally children entering school age have a high caries risk, because at this school age children usually like food and drink snacks as they wish. The impact that occurs when since the beginning has experienced caries is in addition to the function of the teeth as chewing that is disrupted, swollen gums, the child will also experience disturbances in carrying out their daily activities, so the child will not eat and consequently malnutrition can occur, this causes the child to be unable to study because of lack of concentration so that it will affect intelligence. The results of the field analysis and preliminary interviews with school leaders as partners in community service obtained data that students in Muhammadiyah Private Elementary School 03 Medan aged 6-8 years experienced dental caries with the characteristics of cavities, porous, and stains / plaques. These characteristics are related to the patterns or behavior of students who like to consume sweet foods like candy, bread, and chocolate. School Dental Health Efforts (UKGS) have also not been implemented in schools. Therefore, community service is needed to be carried out with a form of socialization prevention for early caries in order to provide knowledge of the main causes, ways of spreading, impact, efforts to prevent dental caries, and providing remineralization (dental caries prevention) containing Casein Phosphopeptid-Amorphous Calcium Phosphate (CPP-ACP) to students of grade II Muhammadiyah Primary School 03 Medan. Community service activities were carried out by five service teams from the Faculty of Dentistry, University of North Sumatra on August 27, 2019, involving as many as twenty two USU FKG students who were undergoing clinical clerkship. The socialization and provision of caries prevention materials to 111 students who were in grade II of Muhammadiyah Primary School - 03 Medan.

Abstract

Background: Candida albicans (C. albicans) was reported as a primary cause of oral candidiasis. Phospholipase enzymes and cell surface hydrophobicity (CSH) are involved in the pathogenesis of its infection. Gracilaria verrucosa (G. verrucosa) is reported to contain flavonoids, tannins, and phenolic compounds, which can inhibit the development of C. albicans. Purpose: The study analyzed the effect of the ethanol extract of G. verrucosa on the inhibition of the phospholipase enzyme and CSH of C. albicans. Methods: The G. verrucosa chemical compounds were examined by phytochemical tests and phospholipase enzyme-inhibiting egg yolk media, and a CSH assay was conducted using xylene. Results: Gracilaria verrucosa contains steroids, terpenoids, tannins/phenolics, and flavonoids. The 25%–100% concentrations inhibit the phospholipase enzyme of C. albicans more strongly at 48 hours than at 12 hours and 24 hours (p < 0.05). Furthermore, the 100% and 75% concentrations substantially affect the inhibition of CSH of C. albicans, with a strong relationship. Conclusion: Gracilaria verrucosa has a more substantial inhibitory effect in suppressing the phospholipase enzyme and CSH of C. albicans.

Abstract

Background: The polishing procedure is an important stage in producing a successful restoration. Polishing involves the use of abrasive materials, and blood cockle shells contain these natural components, such as calcium carbonate, which can be used as a polishing paste. One of the factors that influences the polishing quality is the polishing duration. Purpose: This study evaluated the polishability of a nanohybrid composite using blood cockle shell polishing paste by measuring the surface roughness and gloss value, and by observing the surface qualities based on different polishing times. Methods: Ninety samples of maxillary premolars were immersed in artificial saliva in an incubator at 37°C for 24 h. A total of 45 samples were subjected to a profilometer to observe surface roughness, and the rest were subjected to a glossmeter to observe the composite resin gloss. These included blood cockle shell paste, Prisma Gloss polishing paste, and without paste for 30, 60, and 90 seconds. The data were statistically analyzed using repeated measures ANOVA and post hoc least significant difference (LSD). Results: It showed that the group of 90 seconds had the highest gloss and the lowest surface roughness in the blood cockle shells. The difference was statistically significant (p>0.05). The results of the surface roughness test of the blood cockle shells with a duration of 30 and 60 seconds were found to be not significant (p<0.05). Conclusion: There were significant differences by adding the polishing duration, which decreased the surface roughness and increased the surface gloss, in which the lowest roughness and highest glossiness was found with a polishing time of 90 seconds. The polishability of composite resin restorations in this study obtained the best gloss and smoothest surface results from the longest polishing time duration of 90 seconds with the blood cockle shell polishing paste.
