Abstract

Dental caries is the highest prevalence disease in many countries, it is shown by many studies have been performed to solve dental caries problem. Dental caries process had develop since the teeth are going to erupt in the mouth. However, it has been proved that not all food cause dental caries. Milk product which has high milk protein such casein and calcium, could prevent demineralization. By its ion calcium penetration in soluble enamel, the remineralization process will happen. It make a biofilm coated with calcium phosphoprotein and amorph calcium phosphate formation that formed along milk digestion. So it has a possibility to become an alternative food to prevent dental caries, as anticariogenic and cariostatic agent. As examples, human breast milk, bovine milk, cheese, and yogurt that would be explained in this paper. In conclusion, milk product consumption without any sugar can inhibit caries development.

Abstract

The examination of static and dynamic occlusal relationship are important in orthodontic diagnosis. Thus, this study aims to analysis the difference of occlusal cant and favored chewing side. This is cross-sectional study of 70 healthy dental students Universitas Sumatera Utara with complete dentition and have no orthodontics treatment history. The position of tongue spatula across on occlusal of both first bicuspids to assess the existence and degree of the canting occlusal based on extra-oral photograph. The occlusal cant positive if it coincided to inter pupil as transversal references and sectioned with facial midline as a vertical reference more than 3º. A modified direct method- visual observation was done to assess the favored chewing side. A chi-square test with p level 0.05 in evaluation of the null hypothesis that states there was a difference of occlusal cant and favored chewing side in those subjects. From 36 subjects with cant occlusal positive, there were 26 subjects with and 10 subjects without favored chewing side. Then, from 34 subjects with cant occlusal negative, there were 14 subjects with and 20 subjects without favored chewing side. There was a significant difference (p=0.017) between occlusal cant and favored chewing side. Subjects with complete teeth showed that favored chewing side tendency of 3,714 more often had an occlusal cant positive compared to favored chewing side negative. In conclusion, the significant difference of occlusal cant and favored chewing side in subjects with complete dentition can be considered as a preliminary study in order to understand the complexity of development of mandibular asymmetry.

Abstract

Introduction: Poor dental cleaning habits can lead to plaque accumulation. One of the ways to remove plaque is by brushing your teeth. The plaque will appear within one to two days if there are no oral hygiene measures. The lack of motivation on children in maintaining dental hygiene is caused by various factors such as knowledge and behavior in maintaining dental health. Health education for children is usually carried out through preventive and promotive efforts, one of which is Dental Health Education (DHE) as a form of health education. Booklet and flip chart media are usually used in giving health information because they are effective, easier in making, and can be carried everywhere. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of DHE using the booklet and flip chart media to reduce the OHI-S scores before, a week, and a month after counseling is being given. Methods: This study is true experimental research with one group pre-test post-test design. Sampling using random sampling method and were statistically analyzed by using Wilcoxon and Mann Whitney test. Results: The results showed a significant difference in the mean score of OHI-S between the booklet and flipchart groups before, after a week, and after a month (p = 0.001) and (p = 0.0001). Conclusion: DHE using flipchart media is more effective in reducing children's OHI-S scores rather than a booklet

Abstract

Background: Children's oral health is influenced by several factors related to their mother's condition. Mothers who have poor oral health generally have high anxiety about dentists and will rarely visit dental health services so their children will have poor oral health and oral problems will arise, especially caries. This has a negative impact on the quality of life of children. This study aims to determine the effect of maternal dental anxiety and child caries status on the quality of life of school children in an elementary school in Medan City. Methods: A cross-sectional design was conducted with 71 students, 6 until 7 years-old elementary schools in Medan. Maternal dental anxiety was measured using a Dental Anxiety Scale (DAS) questionnaire and children's quality of life was measured using a Parental Perception Questionnaire (PPQ). The child's caries status was assessed by taking with a smartphone camera and calculating the presence or absence of caries in each child. Results: Caries prevalence in children was 29.6%, maternal dental anxiety 88.7% low, 2.8% high anxiety. The mean score of maternal anxiety was 10.04± 3.46 and the child's quality of life score was 22.48±13. There is a significant effect between caries status and oral symptoms (p-value= 0.012) and  functional limitations (p value = 0.039). Conclusion: Mothers who have high anxiety about dental care will ignore visits to the doctor. If there are dental and oral problems such as caries in children, this condition becomes protracted and affects the quality of life of children. Keywords: Caries, Dental anxiety, Maternal, Oral health, Quality of life

Abstract

The decrease in the production of estrogen and progesterone hormones in menopausal women may result in a condition called xerostomia, which is characterized by the subjective perception of dry mouth. This condition can be treated by using a chemical or mechanical stimulus. Therefore, the aims of this study were to identify the chemical content of forest honey as well as to determine the effect of its usage as a 20% mouth rinse on the salivary flow rate in menopausal women with xerostomia at RSGM Universitas of Sumatera Utara. This is an experimental study, which was designed using a single-blind randomized pretest-posttest control group. The inclusion criteria were menopausal women aged 40-65 years old with xerostomia, were not undergoing chemotherapy or radiotherapy treatment for the neck and head, had no systemic diseases, such as uncontrolled diabetes mellitus and kidney failure, and not consuming medication that could affect the normal saliva function. Subjects who were not cooperative during the study procedures were excluded. The sample population consisted of 30 menopausal women with xerostomia, which were divided into two groups. The first group was treated by asking them to gargle with 20% honey solution, while the second group, which served as a control used distilled water. Saliva was collected before and after treatment into a pot for 5 minutes using the spitting method, and the data collected were analyzed with T-test. The results showed that forest honey was rich in diastase enzyme and it increased the salivary flow rate, with p-value=0.000<0.05. Based on these findings, the use of 20% honey solution had a significant effect in increasing the salivary flow rate in menopausal women with xerostomia.

Abstract

Access to equal oral health attention is the right of all human beings, including orphan children with hearing loss or deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) conditions. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the correlation between the level of oral hygiene and caries indexing among the sub-population of DHH orphans receiving special care at Karya Murni orphanage in Medan City. A cross-sectional design was used with non-probability sampling to select 58 orphans willing to engage in the Oral Hygiene Index-Simplified (OHI-S) and mean of Decayed, Missing, and Filled Permanent Teeth (DMFT) assessment during dental and oral cavity screening after participating in counseling activities. Furthermore, the results showed a positive correlation (p=0.007) between oral hygiene and caries, suggesting that OHI-S impacted DMFT by approximately 34.9%, with both index scores presenting proportional equivalence. There is a need to conduct regular dental health monitoring along with education on visual methods and sign language among DHH orphans. Additionally, DHH orphan caregivers should actively engage in enhancing personal health behaviors, particularly to maintain oral and dental health.
