Abstract

The present study dealt with the correlation between vocabulary mastery and speaking skill of the eighth-grade students of SMP Pancasila Canggu in academic year 2021/2022. The samples were chosen by random sampling method with lottery system as many 38 students. The researchers used two tests to get the data vocabulary mastery and speaking skill, such as: fill in the blank items for the vocabulary mastery and video tell their experience for the speaking skill. The obtained data were analyzed by using Pearson Product Moment using SPSS 25.0 version windows. Based on the data analysis it showed that there is a high and significant correlation between vocabulary mastery and speaking skill of the eighth-grade students at SMP Pancasila Canggu in academic year 2021/2022. Therefore, it answered the research question that there is a significant correlation between vocabulary mastery and speaking skill.

Abstract

The present study was devoted to the implementation of a community service to Elementary school teachers aiming at improving the teachers’ competence in designing and implementing authentic assessment. Participants of this activity were the elementary school teachers in Klungkung district in which the total number was 35 teachers. Before the training started, the teachers were given preliminary test to determine the extent of the ability or competences of teachers on authentic assessment. After figuring out the initial abilities and identifying the needs of the teachers on authentic assessment, then the training was conducted. The results of the final test showed that the ability of teachers in designing and implementing authentic assessment increased significantly. In addition, interviews and questionnaires showed that the motivation of teachers on designing and conducting authentic assessment also increased positively.

Abstract

The present study aimed at improving speaking skill through simulation technique assisted with realia toward the first semester students of ELESP FKIP Unmas Denpasar in academic year 2019/2020. The subjects consisted of 32 subjects. Based on the result of the pre-test which was carried out in pre-cycle, the subjects’ speaking skill in performing the oral dialogue was categorized to be insufficient. This present study was then carried out through implementing simulation technique assisted with realia in two-planned cycles and in each cycle consisted of two successive sessions. The results of post-tests in each cycle showed that there was a significant improvement concerning the subjects’ speaking skill in which it improved from insufficient to good level. This research also showed that there were positive responses concerning the technique implemented in improving the subjects’ speaking skill. To sum up, the present study provided empirical evidences that speaking skill of the first semester students of ELESP FKIP Unmas Denpasar in academic year 2019/2020 could be improved through simulation technique assisted with realia.

Abstract

This study aimed at investigating the correlation between high school students’ grammar and writing ability. The study made used of a correlational research design. The study utilized two types of tests, those are grammar test and writing test. This study found that there is a positive correlation between grammar and the writing ability of high school students. Moreover, the study suggests that teachers should intensifies the teaching of grammar and writing to improve students’ language skills. This study implies that grammar and writing ability should be really taught intensively in the classroom.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to know whether or not the writing skill of the eighth-grade students of secondary school can be improved through the implementation of ESA with video animation. The subject was the eighth-grade students of secondary school that consisted of 33 students, 17 females and 16 males. The researchers used some instruments such as a pre-test, post-tests and a questionnaire to collect the data in this present study. This classroom action research that conducted into two cycles, such as cycle I and cycle II. Each cycle consisted of two sessions. Based on the result of pre-test, the students had problems in writing. Based on the data of mean scores from pre-test until posttests, it showed that the mean score of pre-test was 39.15, post-test I was 68.36 and post-test II was 78.03. It meant that there were significant improvements in the subjects. In addition, the data also was supported by administering a questionnaire. The result of the questionnaire showed more than 90% of subjects gave positive responses through the implementation of ESA to improve their writing skill. In conclusion, writing skill of the eighth grade students of secondary school could be improved through ESA with video animation.

Abstract

The study is aimed at finding the correlation between vocabulary mastery and descriptive writing ability of the tenth-grade students. It aims to find out whether there is a significant correlation or not between students’ vocabulary mastery and descriptive writing ability. This present study used 33 samples of the tenth-grade students. The researcher used tests to collect the data of vocabulary mastery and descriptive writing ability. The technique of analysing the data by using SPSS version 25.0 for Mac. The result of the analysis data showed that the coefficient correlation (r) was 0.716, with the level of significance was 0.000. It indicated that there was a positive significant correlation between vocabulary mastery and descriptive writing ability of the tenth-grade students.

Abstract

This study dealt with the correlation between students’ vocabulary mastery and descriptive paragraph writing ability. The study carried out in grade 8D and 8F of SMP N 1 Kuta Utara in academic year 2021/2022. The purpose of this research was to find out whether there was significant correlation between students’ vocabulary mastery and descriptive paragraph writing ability. The present study used an ex-post facto research with correlational design. The population of the present study consisted of 404 students and the samples were 68 students. The researcher used two tests to get the data of vocabulary mastery and descriptive writing ability, such as procedure rational deletion cloze task items for vocabulary mastery and picture description test for the descriptive paragraph writing ability. The obtained data were assessed by using Pearson Product Moment Correlation and analyzed by using SPSS 25.0. Based on the data analysis, it showed that there is a very high, positive and significant correlation between vocabulary mastery and descriptive paragraph writing ability of the eighth-grade students of SMP N 1 Kuta Utara in academic year 2021/2022. Therefore, it answered the research question that there is a significant correlation between vocabulary mastery and descriptive paragraph writing ability.

Abstract

Self-confidence has an important role in the learners’ willingness to communicate. The present study was to find out whether there was a significant correlation between self-confidence and speaking skill of the tenth-grade students of SMA N 1 Abiansemal in academic year 2022/2023. This research used an ex-post facto. The samples consisted of 34 students which were chosen by means of purposive cluster sampling method. The data were collected through administering the research instruments which were questionnaire and speaking test. The obtained data were statistically analyzed by using Pearson product moment correlation and t-test. The result of the data analysis clearly revealed that the alternative hypothesis was accepted. In other words, the research findings confirmed that there was a significant correlation between self-confidence and speaking skill of the tenth-grade students of SMA N 1 Abiansemal in academic year 2022/2023.

Abstract

Coursebook plays an essential role in English language teaching. It is a guide to the prescribed curriculum and syllabus. However, the coursebook does not always match the needs of students and lecturers. This study aims to develop a speaking coursebook using the ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation) model based on OBE Curriculum. Researchers used Research and Development (R&D) in which the data were collected through questionnaire and interview. There were 26 students and two lecturers in the English Language Education Study Program. From the finding, the design and development of the coursebook are highly influenced by the result of the needs analysis. From the impact of the need analysis, the researchers developed the coursebook for Speaking for Informal Interaction that provides achievable teaching ideas for lecturers, including speaking activities, vocabulary, grammar, dialogue examples, exercise (individual, pair, or group work), and lesson learned related to the topics discussed. The result of validation from experts (design, content, and language), students, and lecturers agreed that the coursebook had met the criteria of a good coursebook. The results of this study can later be effectively used to support the achievement of student communicative competence, especially in the Speaking for Informal Interaction course.

Abstract

This study used classroom action research design which was conducted in two cycles in which each cycle consisted of two sessions. The subject was class IX F of SMP (SLUB) Saraswati 1 Denpasar which consisted of 38 students. In this present study, the research instruments used were tests (pre-test, post-test 1, and post-test 2) and questionnaire. The result of the pre-test showed that the students' ability in speaking was still low. They still had problems with vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, comprehension, and fluency. To solve that problem, the researcher used storytelling technique assisted with picture series that was carried out in two cycles. Based on the data of pre-test, post-test 1, and post-test 2 which were respectively 60.52, 70.13, and 80.52, it showed that there were improvements in speaking when they retold the narrative story. In addition, the questionnaire data showed that there were positive responses towards the implementation of storytelling technique in improving the subjects’ speaking skill. In conclusion, this study research proved that speaking skill of the ninth-grade students of SMP (SLUB) Saraswati 1 Denpasar in academic year 2022/2023 can be improved through storytelling technique assisted with picture series.
