Abstract

Hyperlipidemia is a disease whichthe effect in increased fat levels in the blood. In hyperlipidemia, the condition of high oxidative stress is obtained due to the oxidation process of LDL (Low Density Lipoprotein) in the body, this condition showed by increased of MDA (Malondialdehyde) levels in serum. Bitter melon (Momordica Charantia L.) contains a lot of active ingredients, one of the ingredients of bitter melon that is thought to have antilipidemic effects is flavonoid compounds. This study was experimental study using a randomized posttest only control group design study with a sample size of 30 male white rats (Rattus norvegicus) wistar strain which was divided into 3 groups, namely K1, K2, and K3. In each group, different treatments are given. Negative control group (K1), given standard feed, water ad libitum; Positive control group (K2), given standard feed, high fat feed with a dose of 2.5 ml water ad libitum; The treatment group (K3) was given a standard diet, high-fat feed with a dose of 2.5 ml water ad libitum and extract of bitter melonat a dose of 250 mg / kg BB by orally every morning for 3 weeks. Data analysis using One Way Anova Test. From the results of the test shows the significance of p-value = 0.000 which is <α (0.05). The results showed that there was an effect of  administration ethanol extract of bitter melon (Momordica charantia L.) to decrease in serum MDA (malondialdehyde) levels in male white wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus) given a high-fat diet.

Abstract

Abstract Background : Obesity is an energy balance disorder, ketogenic diet can reduce body weight. Bitter melon (Momordica charantia L.) is a type of vegetable material that is often used as an antioxidant, hypocholesterolemia and hypotriglyceridemia drug. Cucurbitasin is a substance produced by bitter melon (Momordica charantia L.) with a bitter taste which causes in decreasing appetite, resulting in a decrease in triglycerides. This is caused by the bioactivity of bitter melon (Momordica charantia L.) which can increase lipid oxidation, which causes the accumulation of decreased fat tissue which can reduce weight. Methods: This research using pre and post test randomized controlled group design with sample size of 30 male white rats (Rattus norvegicus) wistar lines divided into 3 groups, group 1 as negative control group given standard feed, group 2 as positive control group given high-fat diet with a dose of 2.5 ml and group 3 as a treatment group given a high-fat feed with dose of 2.5 ml and extract of bitter melon (Momordica charantia L.) at dose of 37.5 mg / 150 gBB by feeding tube every morning for 28 days. Data were analyzed by T-paired tests. Result: The T-paired test in each group found a significantly different result of p = 0,000. Conclusion: given bitter melon (Momordica charantia L.) extract and high-fat diet can reduce weight in male white rats (Rattus norvegicus). Keywords:Bitter molon extract, high fat feed, weight loss

Abstract

Increasing levels of blood cholesterol is one of the risk factors for atherosclerosis. Currently, experts have been trying used herbal medicine as an alternative treatment of atherosclerosis. One of the highlights is the use of celery stalks. Celery is generally used as a flavouring dish. In addition, celery stalks are believed able to reduce cholesterol levels because they contain flavonoids, tannins, and saponins. This study was aim to determine the effect of celery stalk ethanol extract to reduce LDL an increase of HDL level in rats after fed high-fat diet. Randomized Post Test Only Control Group Design was used to measure the HDL and LDL blood serum levels of male Wistar (Rattus norvegicus) rats fed a high-fat diet. This study was used 27 male Wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus) divided into 3 groups; K1 was only given regular feed and water, K2 was given a high-fat diet and water, K3 was given a high-fat diet and celery stalk extract at a dose of 75mg/kg BW/day for 14 days. The data were analysed by ANOVA test and Tukey HSD test. The results of the ANOVA test showed a significance value of p-value of LDL = 0.000 and HDL p-value = 0.536.
