Abstract

Sand mining in coastal regions, particularly on Kodingareng Lompo Island, has emerged as an environmental concern that profoundly affects ecosystem sustainability and the livelihoods of local populations. This study aims to analyze the impact of sand mining activities on coastal ecological conditions and their relationship to Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 12 on sustainable consumption and production. A qualitative approach will be adopted, using interviews with local stakeholders such as fishermen, women entrepreneurs, the Neighborhood Association, and the Neighborhood Unit. Sand mining causes coastal erosion, habitat destruction, and water quality degradation. As a result, fishermen's catches and the economic incomes of local communities decline dramatically. This practice accelerates environmental damage contrary to the SDGs and exacerbates damage contrary to the principles of SDG 12. Recommendations for stricter regulations and implementing environmentally friendly mining methods can reduce adverse environmental impacts and support the sustainability of coastal ecosystems and the well-being of local communities. Such policies are essential to balance natural resource utilization and conservation efforts, aligning with SDG target 12. The novelty of this study lies in the need for more literature discussing this issue in Kodingareng Lompo Island.

The Horn of Africa waters are the busiest trade routes and are often passed by thousands of merchant ships worldwide. Merchant ships must overcome the threat of Piracy in the Horn of Africa waters, and the danger comes from Somalia, the center of pirate operations. This article discusses how international law, more precisely the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), reduces acts of ship piracy in the Horn of Africa waters, either in the form of court sentences or by sending patrol teams and forming military operations under the auspices of the U.N. or operating under UNCLOS law to combat Piracy. Abstract

This paper explores the difficulties of unblocking the operations of Black Sea ports that remain under Ukrainian control, as well as the geopolitical dynamics between Russia and Ukraine in the area. There are two primary obstacles: first, Ukraine must preserve its coastal defense capabilities against the threat of Russian invasion without undermining the security of its land; second, it is crucial to ensure that Russia adheres to the regulations that safeguard freedom of navigation in the Black Sea. Since Russia's annexation of Crimea in 2014, Russia's influence in the Sea of Azov and the Black Sea has expanded, jeopardizing the security interests of Ukraine as well as Western partners, such as the US and NATO. The analysis suggests measures that NATO and other allies can implement to enhance maritime security in the region, including bolstering Ukraine's navy and augmenting NATO's presence in the Black Sea. This dispute not only impacts relations between Ukraine and Russia, but also influences regional political and security stability in Southeastern Europe as well as broader international diplomacy.

Abstract

Southeast Asia, as a strategic region connecting two of the world's major oceans, faces a range of maritime security challenges, both traditional, such as territorial disputes in the South China Sea, and non-traditional, such as piracy, human trafficking, and illegal fishing. This article discusses maritime security strategies in the region, with a primary focus on maritime diplomacy cooperation under the ASEAN framework. Using maritime security theory, maritime diplomacy, and a literature analysis, the article examines the effectiveness of ASEAN's regional cooperation in addressing the complexities of maritime threats in Southeast Asia. The study's findings indicate that although challenges such as strong nationalism and geopolitical disputes still hinder collaboration, ASEAN has made progress in building more structured cooperation mechanisms. The article emphasizes that strengthening maritime diplomacy between countries, as well as with global actors, is an effective step to ensure stability, security, and sustainability in Southeast Asia's maritime domain.

Abstract

As an archipelago, Indonesia has a vast ocean and is rich in biodiversity. With a vast ocean, Indonesia has considerable marine ecotourism potential. However, the problem that needs to be solved is destructive fishing in Indonesian waters. Destructive fishing can damage the marine ecosystem and reduce the number of marine life that characterizes Indonesian waters. Kapoposang Island is one of Indonesia's areas with great marine ecotourism potential. However, on Kapoposang Island, there are cases of destructive fishing which are feared to hurt the development of marine ecotourism. Besides that, community participation is needed so that an increase can follow the growth of marine ecotourism on Kapoposang Island in the standard of living of the local community, one of which is the economy. This study examined the relationship between destructive fishing and tourism development on Kapoposang Island. The research was conducted using a qualitative approach to analyze the impact of destructive fishing on the development of marine ecotourism on Kapoposang Island, Pangkajene Islands Regency, South Sulawesi. Researchers used data sources in the form of interviews and literature studies.

Abstract

Sebatik Island, which is located on the border of Indonesia and Malaysia, is a very strategic area but is vulnerable to illegal immigration problems. The unclear geography, as well as the social and economic dependence of the community on Malaysia, worsens the situation by creating illegal crossing routes that are difficult to monitor. This article explores various collaborative efforts made by Indonesia and Malaysia to strengthen supervision and law enforcement in the Sebatik Island area. These efforts include joint patrols, cross-border coordination, improving immigration facilities, and more integrated law enforcement. However, obstacles such as differences in policy, limited personnel and the strength of smuggling networks still hamper the effectiveness of border management. For this reason, more intensive cooperation is needed, to ensure the protection of state sovereignty and the welfare of border communities.

Abstract

The Russian invasion of Ukraine, which began in February 2022, has not only caused a humanitarian crisis but also triggered severe environmental consequences, particularly along the Ukrainian-Russian border. This study explores how military actions, occupation of sensitive ecological zones, and the targeting of industrial and critical infrastructure have led to widespread environmental degradation. Using a qualitative approach grounded in document analysis and legal frameworks, the research highlights how security actors have influenced the scale and nature of environmental damage. The findings reveal serious threats to soil quality, water safety, air purity, and biodiversity, as well as disruptions to waste management and energy systems. The paper also discusses the role of ecocide as a potential legal category for holding actors accountable for deliberate environmental harm. By situating the war within the broader context of environmental security and conflict ecology, the study argues for stronger international mechanisms to address ecological risks in armed conflict and post-war recovery.

Abstract

The plan for the construction of the Kra Canal has emerged since 1977, initiated by King Narai. The Kra Canal will connect the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea, making it an alternative to the congested and vulnerable Strait of Malacca. Despite its great potential and benefits and having been planned for a long time, the canal has yet to be built. This paper aims to discuss the reasons behind the difficulties in constructing the Kra Canal. The method used in this paper is qualitative descriptive by conducting library research. The theories applied are Security Dilemma and Maritime Diplomacy. The data used are secondary data sourced from books, journals, credible official news, and relevant trustworthy websites. The findings indicate that there are complex geopolitical and economic aspects. Major challenges include high costs, risks of damage, environmental concerns, and Thailand’s unstable internal political situation. The presence of the Kra Canal has the potential to complicate the security situation in the Southeast Asian region with the involvement of major powers such as China, India, and the United States.
