Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of learning vocabulary using word wall media for seventh grade students of SMP Negeri Selangit in the 2018/2019 Academic Year. This research method is pre-experimental with one group pre-test and post-test design. The results showed that there were four main findings, namely the student’s scores on the pre-test 51.25, the student's scores on the post-test 70.53. The normality in the pre-test was 3,200 and 11,070, while the post-test results showed 5,427 and 11,070 and the result of the paired t-test calculation was 11.14. In conclusion, learning vocabulary using word wall media is significantly effective in class VII students of SMP Negeri Selangit in the 2018/2019 Academic Year. Abstract

This study aims to describe the attitudes and challenges of students towards the teaching practicum program (PPL) of STKIP-PGRI Lubuklinggau in Junior High School. The research method used is descriptive qualitative research. The research subjects were 16 respondents who were selected by purposive sampling. In collecting data, researchers used interviews and questionnaires. The results showed that many respondents had the most positive attitudes towards the affective and behavioral components. However, the component with the lowest teacher candidate teacher attitudes is the cognitive component. In terms of challenges for prospective teachers, most respondents (37.5%) rated field workload as a challenge, while the least field of supervision was faced by respondents during PPL (6.25%). In conclusion, the analysis of findings related to the attitudes of prospective STKIP-PGRI Lubuklinggau teachers in Junior High Schools is an almost positive attitude. Abstract

This study aims to explain the choice of language and domains in the Lubuklinggau indigenous people, language attitudes towards the selected language, and the factors determining language choice in the Lubuklinggau indigenous people. The research method used is the descriptive qualitative method. The subjects of this study were the indigenous people of Lubuklinggau. The data collection techniques used in this study were questionnaires and interviews. This study shows three common languages commonly used by the Lubuklinggau indigenous people and seven domains. The three languages are PMLD, BI, and Cul. In conclusion, the Lubuklinggau indigenous people usually use three common languages in seven territories. The choice of language is influenced by several factors such as dominant language, solidarity, prestige and politeness. Abstract

The problem of the research was: “What are the teacher’s problem found in blended learning at SMAN 8 Muara Beliti?”. The objective of the research was to find out the teacher’s problem found in blended learning at SMA N 8 Muara Beliti. The sample of the research was an English Teacher at SMAN 8 Muara Beliti. The samples were taken through Purposive sampling. The researcher used descriptive qualitative research and the data were collected by interview, and documentation. A kind of interview used by the researcher was unstructured interview. Interview and documentation used to identify English teacher’s problem in teaching English when daring and luring process. Abstract

ABSTRACTThe aim of the research was to find out whether or not it was significantly effective to teaching students speaking by using elicitation technique to the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 2 Lubuklinggau. The sample of the research was 38 students taken from class of Eighth-five. In this research, the researcher used pre-experimental research with one group of pre-test and post-test. Based on the collecting the data by used oral test, the result of the research indicated that elicitation technique was significantly effective to improve students speaking at eighth students. It could be seen from the score students in pre-test and post-test. The average of student’s score in pre-test was 66 achieve by one students and 100% failed in test, meanwhile the students’ average score in post-test was 88 achieve by 3 students and 27 students passed in test or 71%. In addition, the result of paired t-test was that tobtained was 13.24 and ttable was 1.70. it mean tobtained was higher than ttable (13.24 ≥ 1.70). Alternative (Ha) was accepted and it was significantly effective to teach speaking by using elicitation technique to the eighth grade students at SMP Negeri 2 lubuklinggau.Key words: Teaching Speaking, Elicitation Technique

Abstract

The research aims to describe the functions of humor used in an American comedy movie The Boss. The subject of the research was American comedy movie The Boss. Descriptive qualitative method was used to conduct the research. Data collection was done through library research and documentation. Data analysis was done through identification, coding, classification and description. The researcher found several findings. Supported by Meyers theory of joke, there are 6 functions of jokes found in the movie such as to insult someone, to express anger, to tease someone, to relieve tension, to get attention, and to amuse others. The dominant function was differentiation particularly to insult and to express anger 21 times, the second was clarification particularly to relieve tension humorous lines and amuse others 15 times, the third was enforcement particularly to tease 18 times, and the last was identification particularly to relieve tension and to get attention 27 times. These functions were also analyzed and discriminated by different setting and participant based on formality and participants distance. According to the analysis, most jokes occurred in informal situation with intimate relationship among the participants and functioned to tease someone and to relieve tension. This finding also proves that American humor is expressed with more slapstick and vulgarity as the characteristic of American humor used in daily communication. Abstract

The research aims at describing politeness used by Americans in Bad Neighbors movie to express apology. This is a qualitative descriptive research which identified, observed, transcribed the data as well as described them in the sentences. The findings present the strategy of apologizing and the use of address terms overviewed from politeness strategies such as positive politeness, negative politeness and off record. The use of address terms in expressing apology covered terms of addressing in negative politeness includes the use of title plus last name (TLN) (such as Mr. Haywood and Maam) and positive politeness includes different nick names (NN) (such as Mac, Baby, Scoonie, Guys, etc). The variation of apologizing includes direct apology (sorry and I am sorry). In the application of direct apology I am sorry, no address term was used in the expression and it indicates positive politeness. In a direct expression of apology sorry, there was a term of address used preceded the expression and sometimes it also occurred afterward. Based on the description, it can be inferred that most of expression of direct apology expressed in positive politeness because the first speaker wanted to show a more intimate relationship to the second speaker. The position of the terms also affects the purpose and the quality of sincerity of the speakers. This strategy considered to be an effective way to express apology to show that the speaker who committed a responsibility of apologizing regretted the mistakes. Abstract

This study was conducted to find out the answer of question about what the English lexical collocation found in English Newspaper, The Jakarta Post. This study was designed as a descriptive qualitative research and data of the study was described in form of qualitative description. The data was taken from the headlines of the Jakarta post newspaper which published on April 4th - 9th 2016. The sources of the data in this study were sentences and utterances that contain collocation. Human instrument was the only instrument used in collecting and analyzing the data gathered. The result of this study showed that (1) there were fourty four English lexical collocations found in the Jakarta post newspaper and (2) the meanings of English lexical collocation were fourty three had denotative meaning and one had connotative meaning. Abstract

This study aims to explain the views of lecturers and students of STKIP-PGRI Lubuklinggau on disruptive behavior in online English learning during the Covid 19 pandemic and describe the level of seriousness in providing the best solution to these problems. The research method used is descriptive qualitative research using grounded theory with an inductive approach. Data was collected through interviews as primary data, observation and document analysis. The subjects of this study were seven lecturers and 14 students (disruptive behavior) English Education STKIP-PGRI Lubuklinggau. The results showed seven general categories of disruptive behavior: breaking time, dishonesty, disrespect, lack of concentration, skipping lessons and assignments, doing things privately, and giving slow responses. The lecturers offered several solutions for these problems by considering the level of seriousness, such as applying positive discipline, formulating and designing rules strategies and teaching media, giving punishment and expecting to end online learning. In conclusion, by knowing students' disruptive behavior, lecturers and other parties will be more concerned about taking some appropriate actions to minimize and avoid some behaviors in improving online English learning. Abstract

ABSTRACT The problem of the study was “What are the types, meanings, and functions used in novel ‘Koala Kumal’ by Raditya Dika?” The objectives of the study were to find out the types, meanings, and functions of code mixing used in novel “Koala Kumal” by Raditya Dika. This study mainly aimed to describe code mixing found in novel “Koala Kumal”. The writer used a qualitative descriptive method to classify and analyze the data. The data were analyzed through some steps including identification, classification, reduction, description, and conclusion. After the data were analyzed, the writer found the types, the meanings, and the functions of code mixing in novel “Koala Kumal”. The types of code mixing that were found in novel “Koala Kumal” were insertion of word (112 words) and phrase (53 phrases), alternation (4 clauses), and congruent lexicalization (3 words). Denotative meanings (170 words and phrases) and connotative meanings (65 words, phrases, and clauses) were found in novel “Koala Kumal”. The functions of code mixing which found were to involve the topic of conversation (146 words and phrases), adapt with new participant (21 words, phrases, and clauses), and express solidarity (5 words). In summary, code mixing which is used by Raditya Dika in his novel had the purpose to inform and convey the topic which Raditya talk about, then to express his feeling, and also to measure the level of solidarity among the relationship between Raditya Dika with other people in intimate and distance relationship.
