Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the media framing of Kompas.com regarding public demands for the establishment of a national disaster status following the floods and landslides in Sumatra at the end of 2025. The research employs a descriptive qualitative approach using the framing analysis model proposed by Robert N. Entman, which consists of four elements: problem definition, causal interpretation, moral evaluation, and treatment recommendation. The data consist of three news articles published by Kompas.com between November and December 2025, highlighting demands from political actors, religious leaders, and civil society organizations. The findings reveal that Kompas.com frames the disaster as a humanitarian crisis that exceeds the capacity of local governments, with causes attributed not only to natural factors but also to structural and policy failures. From a moral perspective, the media emphasizes the state's responsibility to protect its citizens while criticizing the slow response of the central government. The recommended solution consistently highlighted is the declaration of a national disaster status to accelerate resource mobilization, improve inter-agency coordination, and enable access to international aid. The study also identifies two dominant framing patterns, namely structural criticism and humanitarian framing, reflecting the media’s role as a social control mechanism and a bridge for public aspirations during crises. These findings underline that media not only disseminate information but also shape public perception and influence policy accountability   Keywords: Media Framing, National Disaster, Kompas.com, Sumatra Flood, Entman Analysis

Abstract

Online media play a significant role in shaping public understanding through the framing of issues and public figures. This study addresses the limited attention to how media framing constructs legitimacy and public image in Indonesian digital journalism by analyzing the coverage of Kompas.com on Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa using Robert N. Entman’s framing model. The research employs a qualitative approach with framing analysis of ten news articles published in October 2025. Data were collected through documentation and analyzed based on four elements: define problems, diagnose causes, make moral judgments, and treatment recommendations. The findings indicate that Kompas.com constructs Purbaya’s image dynamically through patterns of legitimacy, criticism, conflict neutralization, and positioning as a problem-solving actor. He is portrayed as a professional and rational figure, while also receiving critical framing related to authority and communication style. The framing tends to maintain balance by providing space for clarification and multiple perspectives. These results demonstrate that media framing functions not only as a mechanism of selection and emphasis but also as a process of negotiating public legitimacy in digital journalism. The study contributes to the development of Entman’s framing model by highlighting its contextual application in Indonesian online media.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze political communication in mass media reporting in Medan and its implications for contemporary social dynamics. The research focuses on patterns, forms, and impacts of political communication in shaping public responses at the local level. This study employs a qualitative descriptive-analytical approach. Primary data were collected through in-depth interviews with six purposively selected informants: two journalists, two mass media editors, one political communication academic, and one active media audience member. Secondary data were collected through documentation and literature studies, particularly the analysis of mass media reporting. Data collection techniques included in-depth interviews, non-participant observation, and document analysis, while data analysis followed the stages of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. Data validity was ensured through source and method triangulation. The findings, derived from both interview data and analysis of media reports, indicate that political communication in Medan’s mass media functions not only as a channel for delivering political information but also as a mechanism for framing issues, personalizing political actors, and dramatizing conflicts. The forms of political communication identified include informative, persuasive, symbolic, interpretive, and confrontational modes. These practices contribute to increased public sensitivity toward local political issues, the shaping of political images of key actors, and the emergence of fragmented perceptions within contemporary society.

Abstract

The rapid development of digital media has transformed political communication practices by enabling faster information dissemination, broader public participation, and greater interaction between political actors and audiences. However, these developments have also raised ethical concerns regarding the accuracy, objectivity, and responsibility of political communication in digital environments. Despite extensive discussions on digital political communication, limited research has specifically examined how political communication ethics are practiced within digital mass media and how these practices influence the quality of political information and public opinion formation. This study aims to analyze the implementation of political communication ethics in digital media, identify the factors influencing its application, and examine its implications for political information quality and public opinion formation. A qualitative approach with a descriptive-interpretive method was employed. The research participants consisted of online journalists, editors, and media and political communication experts selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through non-participant observation of political news content, in-depth semi-structured interviews, and documentary analysis of news texts, journalistic codes of ethics, and editorial policies. Data were analyzed using an interactive model involving data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that the implementation of political communication ethics in digital media is often situational and characterized by compromises between ethical standards, market demands, and political interests. Individual factors, organizational structures, and socio-cultural dynamics within the media ecosystem influence the practice. Furthermore, inconsistencies in ethical implementation contribute to the decline of political information quality and encourage the emergence of emotional, polarized, and less rational public opinion. The study concludes that strengthening political communication ethics is essential for maintaining information credibility and promoting democratic discourse in the digital era. This research contributes to the development of political communication theory by highlighting the interaction between ethical principles and digital media dynamics, while also providing practical recommendations for media organizations, journalists, and policymakers to enhance ethical standards in political communication.

Abstract

This study examines the self-presentation strategies of students at the State Islamic University of North Sumatra (UINSU) through Instagram as a space for identity formation and self-image construction. A qualitative method with a phenomenological approach was employed, with data collected through interviews, observation, and documentation. Four students were selected as informants using purposive sampling. The findings show that students use Instagram as a front stage through strategies such as self-promotion and deliberate content selection to obtain social recognition. A gap exists between real life (back stage) and the image projected online, indicating that identity on social media is a selective construction that does not fully reflect the authentic self. Social media also encourages the formation of particular social standards that shape how students present themselves in the digital public space. These findings confirm the relevance of Erving Goffman's dramaturgical perspective in analyzing identity construction among university students

Abstract

Optimal utilization of academic data is an important requirement in supporting data-based learning decision making. One approach that can be used is Educational Data Mining (EDM) through clustering techniques to map students' academic abilities. This study aims to apply the K-Means Clustering algorithm in grouping students based on exam score patterns in one subject at MAN 2 Labuhanbatu Utara. The data used consists of daily scores, midterm scores, and final exam scores of 11th grade students, which were processed through pre-processing, data normalization, and clustering analysis stages. The determination of the optimal number of clusters was carried out using the Elbow method with the Within Cluster Sum of Squares (WCSS) indicator. The results showed that the three-cluster configuration was the most representative grouping structure, which could be interpreted as groups of students with high, medium, and low academic performance, respectively. The differences in centroid values between clusters indicate significant and structured variations in academic achievement. These findings prove that the K-Means algorithm is effective for mapping student learning groups objectively without requiring initial labels. The clustering results are expected to serve as a basis for teachers and schools in designing more adaptive learning strategies tailored to students' ability characteristics.
