Abstract

As a genetic resource, local rice can provide insight into the inheritance of favorable traits. Local rice varieties have naturally been tested for resistance to pests and diseases, high yields, good rice quality (including class 1 quality), and a taste that people like, but also have some disadvantages, such as long life and high plant height that easily collapses. For this reason, the characteristics of local rice varieties that have these advantages are improved using the gamma-ray induced mutation technique. Before planting in the field, it is necessary to test the vigor and viability of local rice genotypes (Oryza sativa L.) Padang Pariaman seeds first. In this study, researchers used three different rice varieties, namely: "Madang Pulau", "Putiah Papanai", and "Banang Kuniang" and gamma irradiation, with radiation doses of 0, 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, and 600 Gy. Based on the results of the study, the local rice seed varieties of Padang Pariaman Regency and the dose of gamma irradiation had a significant effect on maximum germination, while germination speed, germination capacity, vigor index, and growth uniformity were significantly affected by the dose of gamma irradiation. Gamma irradiation with doses of 400-600 Gy resulted in a more significant decrease in seed vigor and viability compared to irradiation with doses of 100-300 Gy.

Abstract

Success in cultivating potatoes is the use of good quality potato seeds. Good quality potato seeds are produced through several stages starting from in vitro culture to extension seed production. One of the important stages in potato seed production is the production of first generation (G1) potato seeds. Efforts to increase the yield of G1 tubers can be made through modifying the planting media and applying growth regulators. This research aims to produce G1 potato tubers by adjusting the composition of the planting media (cocopeat, cocofiber, charcoal husk) and applying a growth inhibitor (Daminozide). The research consisted of four series of experiments. Each experiment was carried out using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with six treatments, each repeated four times. Experiment 1 (a. Cocopeat 100% + 0% husk charcoal; b. Cocopeat 20% + 80% husk charcoal; c. Cocopeat 40% + 60% husk charcoal; d. Cocopeat 60% + 40% husk charcoal; e. Cocopeat 80% + Charcoal Husk 20%; f. Cocopeat 0% + Charcoal Husk 100%. Experiment 2 (a. Cocofiber 100%; b. Cocopeat 100%; c. Cocopeat 20% + Cocofiber 80%; d. Cocopeat 40% + Cocofiber 60%; e. Cocopeat 60% + Cocofiber 40%; f. Cocopeat 80% + Cocofiber 20%. Experiment 3 (a. Cocopeat + Cocofiber + husk charcoal (1 : 1 : 1); b. Cocopeat + Cocofiber + charcoal husk (1 : 1 : 2); c. Cocopeat + Cocofiber + husk charcoal (1 : 2 : 1); d. Cocopeat + Cocofiber + husk charcoal (2 : 1 : 1). Experiment 4 (a. Daminozide 0 ppm; b. Daminozide 500 ppm; c. Daminozide 1000 ppm; d. Daminozide 1500 ppm). From the research results it can be concluded: 1) The combination treatment of 80% cocopeat + 20% cocofiber is the best treatment combination in the vegetative growth phase; 2) Composition treatment 60% cocopeat + 40% husk charcoal is the best treatment for the growth and number of G1 potato tubers; 3) Treatment of the composition of the planting media with cocopeat, cocofiber, and husk charcoal with a composition of 1:1:1 produces the highest number of tubers; 4) The best concentration of daminozide for the growth and production of G1 potato seed tubers is 3500 ppm.

Abstract

Cocoa seeds are classified as recalcitrant and have a pulp layer containing corrosive substances such as abscisic acid; if not properly cleaned, this layer can inhibit the germination process. To date, manual pulp cleaning using scouring ash remains ineffective and time-consuming. An alternative method is chemical treatment, such as using hydrochloric acid (HCl). The application of HCl at specific concentrations has been shown to effectively dissolve and break down the pulp layer attached to the seeds without damaging the seed tissue. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of various HCl concentrations for pulp extraction and their impact on the viability and vigor of cocoa seeds of the TSH 858 variety. The research was conducted at the Seed Technology Laboratory of the Faculty of Agriculture, Andalas University, employing a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with five treatments: 0% HCl (control), 1% HCl, 3% HCl, 5% HCl, and 7% HCl. Each treatment was replicated four times. Data were analyzed using the F-test at a 5% significance level, followed by Duncan's New Multiple Range Test (DNMRT) at the same level if a significant effect was detected. The parameters measured included seed moisture content, germination rate, seedling height, root length, and vigor index. The results indicated that treatment with 5% HCl yielded the best outcomes for seed vigor, particularly in enhancing root length, but had no significant effect on seed viability. Therefore, 5% HCl is effective for extracting cocoa seed pulp without compromising viability and can improve seed vigour by promoting root growth.

Abstract

Arenga pinnata (sugar palm) seeds are classified as seeds that have a long dormancy period. This dormancy can be influenced by the maturity level of the sugar palm fruit. This study aims to characterize the morphology and anatomy at various levels of fruit maturity and its relationship to the dormancy of sugar palm seeds. The research was conducted descriptively, involving data collection through morphological, anatomical, and physiological observations of sugar palm fruits and seeds randomly selected from productive sugar palms in Nagari Andaleh Baruh Bukik, Sungayang Subdistrict. The sampling technique was conducted through the purposive sampling method on 12 productive palm trees aged 10 years and above. The results showed that morphologically, there were changes in the color of the skin of the palm fruit to yellowish when it reached physiological maturity, as well as the texture of the hardened seed shell. Changes did not follow these changes in shell color and seed size. Physiologically, there is an increase in gibberellin hormone levels along with the increase in fruit maturity, and it continues to increase when entering the germination phase. Anatomically, the structure of the seed embryo does not show significant changes since the beginning of the fruit ripening. Based on this, there is a mutual relationship between the morphological and physiological characteristics of the dormancy of sugar palm seeds. The riper the palm fruit is, the harder the seed shell is, so the seed dormancy becomes longer and is known as morphophysiological dormancy.

Abstract

Abstract. Hervani D, Sari SP. 2022. The abundance of arthropods and natural enemies on two growth phases of hybrid corn, Solok District, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 23: 2966-2972. Solok District, West Sumatra, Indonesia is one of Indonesia's hybrid corn production regions. As yet, the study of arthropods is still limited. This study aimed to study the abundance and diversity of arthropods in the hybrid maize agroecosystem in Solok District, West Sumatra. The research was conducted from May to November 2020 in Tanah Garam Sub-district, Solok District. The sampling was carried out four times in two growth phases of hybrid corn: vegetative (the age of 20 and 40 days after planting/DAP) and the generative phase (the age of 60 and 80 DAP). The arthropod collection was conducted using a yellow trap and a modified vacuum technique. The identification process was carried out at the Insect Bioecology Laboratory, Andalas University. The study found two classes of arthropods in a hybrid cornfield in Solok District, namely Arachnida and Insecta. The Shannon-Weiner diversity index value (H') was 1.383, and the evenness index of species (J') was 0.997. A total of  2,927 individual arthropods, 80 families, 8 orders,  and 3 classes, were recorded in the hybrid corn ecosystem in Solok District. Insect class (2,866 individuals) dominated the diversity of arthropods, where the majority of the arthropods found belong to groups of natural enemies such as predators and parasitoids. Conservation of natural enemies (predators and parasitoids) is one of the main factors in supporting the success of pests biologically, so the act of identifying natural enemies in an area is very important.

Abstract. Anggraini T, Anwar A, Hervani D, Suhendra D, Wisnubroto MP, Noflindawati, Nst IM. 2025. Quality of sugar palm sap (Arenga pinnata) from various production centers in West Sumatra, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 26: 859-860. Arenga pinnata is a palm tree that produces palm sap, which contains high sugar content and offers a sweet taste and bioactive components that function as antioxidants. These A. pinnata trees grow in West Sumatra, where sugar palm fruit and palm sap sugar are the main horticultural products. In this study, we investigated the quality of palm sap (A. pinnata) from various sap-producing regions thrive in West Sumatra, Indonesia, focusing on their color, total sugar contents, antioxidant activities, total phenolic contents, and Fourier Transform Infra-Red (FTIR) measurements. We compared palm sap sugar from the West Pasaman, Agam, Tanah Datar, Limapuluh Kota, South Solok, and Dharmasraya regions in West Sumatra. The color of palm sugar sap is vibrant yellow-red. The total sugar content ranges from 7-15.73%. The antioxidant activity of palm sap varies based on its concentration, with its total polyphenol content ranging from 46.32-499.32 mg GAE/g, highlighting the potential health benefits of palm sap. We also used the FTIR analysis to identify functional groups in the samples. This finding showed that the quality of palm sap found in West Sumatra varies in terms of quality. Based on its antioxidant content, MNJ A has the highest antioxidant activity, and TLM A has the highest total polyphenols. These results show that total polyphenols are not the only ones that contribute to the antioxidant activity of palm sap.
