Abstract

Abstract

Oil palm plants are the belle of the community in the Dharmasraya Regency today. One of the causes of the low productivity of community plantations is caused by the production technology that is applied relatively simple, starting from seeding to harvesting. With the application of appropriate cultivation technology, it will be directed to increase palm oil production. The activity objectives are to 1) increase the understanding and knowledge of the Nagari Silago community about oil palm production technology, 2) improve the community's knowledge and skills in processing agricultural waste to be more useful 3) encourage the enthusiasm of farmers so that they can better utilize Nagari Silago's agricultural potential. This community service activity was carried out in Nagari Silago District IX Koto Dharmasraya Regency on 26-27 October 2019. This community service activity was carried out using the lecture, discussion method. The number of students involved numbered 150 people. Previously, the community service participants only followed the coconut cultivation technique, which was carried out by the farmers before, even though the cultivation technique was not correct. The Nagari Silago community is very enthusiastic about welcoming and discussing about the technology of oil palm cultivation. Many people ask questions, and good discussions are starting from the origin of seedlings and oil palm nursery techniques, land clearing, fertilizing, castration, pest control, and diseases of oil palm plants. Farmers can consider the concept of 5 T, which is the right way, the proper dosage, the right time, the right type and the right quality that is important in providing that which is not suitable enough for vegetative and generative growth of oil palm.

Abstract

Nagari Sungai Abang is one of the areas in Lubuk Alung District, one of the rice production centers in Padang Pariaman Regency. One farming group that intensively cultivates rice is the Farming Business group. The problem with the farmer groups is their ignorance of the benefits of straw as a source of organic matter in the soil. The composting process is long, so farmers always burn rice straw after harvest in preparation for planting the following season. If the burning of straw is carried out continuously, it is feared that nutrients will be deficient in the soil. This activity aims to empower Farming Business groups in Nagari Sungai Abang, Lubuk Alung District, to utilize Plant Growth Promoting Rhizobacteria (PGPR) as a bio activator in making straw compost as organic fertilizer and an alternative to addressing the problem of straw waste in Nagari Sungai Abang, Lubuk Alung. This activity has been carried out in the Farming Group of Farmers in Sungai Abang Dalam Nagari Sungai Abang, Lubuk Alung District, Padang Pariaman Regency. The method used is outreach, counseling, and training to demonstrate making PGPR suspension and compost from straw. From the activities that have been carried out, ready-to-use PGPR is obtained as a bio activator reproduced in coconut water media and used as a bio activator to speed up the composting process. The conclusion of this activity is increasing farmers' understanding of the benefits of straw as a raw material for compost and the use of PGPR as a bioactivator in making straw compost.

Abstract

Arenga pinnata (sugar palm) seeds are classified as seeds that have a long dormancy period. This dormancy can be influenced by the maturity level of the sugar palm fruit. This study aims to characterize the morphology and anatomy at various levels of fruit maturity and its relationship to the dormancy of sugar palm seeds. The research was conducted descriptively, involving data collection through morphological, anatomical, and physiological observations of sugar palm fruits and seeds randomly selected from productive sugar palms in Nagari Andaleh Baruh Bukik, Sungayang Subdistrict. The sampling technique was conducted through the purposive sampling method on 12 productive palm trees aged 10 years and above. The results showed that morphologically, there were changes in the color of the skin of the palm fruit to yellowish when it reached physiological maturity, as well as the texture of the hardened seed shell. Changes did not follow these changes in shell color and seed size. Physiologically, there is an increase in gibberellin hormone levels along with the increase in fruit maturity, and it continues to increase when entering the germination phase. Anatomically, the structure of the seed embryo does not show significant changes since the beginning of the fruit ripening. Based on this, there is a mutual relationship between the morphological and physiological characteristics of the dormancy of sugar palm seeds. The riper the palm fruit is, the harder the seed shell is, so the seed dormancy becomes longer and is known as morphophysiological dormancy.

Abstract

Abstract. Anggraini T, Anwar A, Hervani D, Suhendra D, Wisnubroto MP, Noflindawati, Nst IM. 2025. Quality of sugar palm sap (Arenga pinnata) from various production centers in West Sumatra, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 26: 859-860. Arenga pinnata is a palm tree that produces palm sap, which contains high sugar content and offers a sweet taste and bioactive components that function as antioxidants. These A. pinnata trees grow in West Sumatra, where sugar palm fruit and palm sap sugar are the main horticultural products. In this study, we investigated the quality of palm sap (A. pinnata) from various sap-producing regions thrive in West Sumatra, Indonesia, focusing on their color, total sugar contents, antioxidant activities, total phenolic contents, and Fourier Transform Infra-Red (FTIR) measurements. We compared palm sap sugar from the West Pasaman, Agam, Tanah Datar, Limapuluh Kota, South Solok, and Dharmasraya regions in West Sumatra. The color of palm sugar sap is vibrant yellow-red. The total sugar content ranges from 7-15.73%. The antioxidant activity of palm sap varies based on its concentration, with its total polyphenol content ranging from 46.32-499.32 mg GAE/g, highlighting the potential health benefits of palm sap. We also used the FTIR analysis to identify functional groups in the samples. This finding showed that the quality of palm sap found in West Sumatra varies in terms of quality. Based on its antioxidant content, MNJ A has the highest antioxidant activity, and TLM A has the highest total polyphenols. These results show that total polyphenols are not the only ones that contribute to the antioxidant activity of palm sap.
