Abstract

Abstract

This study examines the use of implicit sarcasm in digital interactions between SEAblings and Knetz on platform X through a pragmasemantic perspective. The research aims to identify the types and patterns of implicit sarcasm, analyze sarcastic meanings through conversational implicature based on Grice’s theory, and explore how sarcasm contributes to identity construction in online conflict. This study employed a qualitative descriptive method using documentation techniques. The data consisted of posts, comments, and replies collected through screenshots from platform X related to the SEAblings and Knetz conflict. The data were analyzed interpretatively by categorizing sarcasm types, identifying violations of Gricean maxims, and examining identity functions within ingroup and outgroup interactions. The findings revealed that implicit sarcasm and irony were the most dominant forms used in the interactions. Most sarcastic expressions relied on conversational implicature and frequently violated the maxim of quality to convey indirect criticism and mockery. In addition, sarcasm functioned as a linguistic strategy for attacking opposing groups, reinforcing solidarity, and negotiating social identity in digital communication. The study concludes that implicit sarcasm plays a significant role in shaping communication patterns and identity construction within online intercultural conflict.

Abstract

This research focuses on examining humor within online communication by investigating implicature and entailment found in comments on social media. The data were collected using a documentation technique by capturing screenshots of humorous comments on the Threads platform. The data were analyzed through implicature and entailment analysis using pragmatic and semantic perspectives. The results indicate that implicature is a key aspect in the understanding of humor, as the majority of comments depend on suggested meanings rather than direct statements. Conversely, entailment serves as an supporting component that creates logical connections but is frequently overshadowed by the interpretation based on context. Furthermore, the digital environment, including shared knowledge, informal language, and an engaging communication style, greatly impacts the way humor is created and perceived. Consequently, humor in social media serves not only as a source of amusement but also reflects the users’ pragmatic skills and inventive use of language.

Abstract

Using Grice’s theory of conversational implicature and Searle’s illocutionary taxonomy, this study examines speech acts and implicatures in Taylor Swift’s lyrics for “Love Story.” A qualitative descriptive method is applied to analyse 43 utterances, identifying the song’s implied meanings and communicative functions. The results show that assertive speech acts predominate at 58.1%, followed by directives (30.2%), expressive (25.6%), commissive (11.6%), and declaratives (2.3%); these percentages reflect frequency of occurrence and do not sum to 100% because a single utterance may realize more than one speech act simultaneously. For implicatures, classification follows criteria: Generalized Conversational Implicature (65.1%) conveys meaning understandable without specific background knowledge, whereas Particularized Conversational Implicature (34.9%) depends heavily on context and intertextual references—mainly to Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet and Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter. Combined, these pragmatic strategies construct a multi‑layered romantic narrative accessible at both universal and context‑specific levels. This study demonstrates that song lyrics constitute a rich form of pragmatic discourse, in which speech acts and implicatures interact to convey narrative meaning and emotional depth beyond literal expression.

Abstract

The increasing use of sarcasm and humour in social media discourse has transformed online comment sections into significant spaces for social criticism and public engagement. The present study investigates the use of sarcasm and humour by Generation Z (Gen Z) netizens on TikTok from a pragma-semantic perspective, focusing on their responses to viral issues during 2025–2026. It examines how sarcastic and humorous expressions function not only as forms of entertainment but also as vehicles for criticism, resistance, and evaluation in contemporary digital communication. Employing a qualitative content analysis to examine 20 TikTok comments selected from five viral topics. The analysis was guided by Austin’s (1962) dan Searle’s (1969) Speech-Act theory and a pragma-semantic framework, which integrates semantic meaning with contextual interpretation to uncover the pragmatic functions of sarcasms ang humour. The findings reveal a functional shift in online language use, in which TikTok comments serve not merely locutionary purposes of information sharing but also illocutionary functions of criticism, satire, and social resistance. Gen Z users frequently employ indirect speech, absurd humour, irony, wordplay, and (clumsy) metaphors to express scepticism toward public figures, institutions, and policies. Furthermore, conventional expressions such as “thank you” undergo semantic-pragmatic shifts, functioning sarcastically in specific contexts. The findings demonstrate that humour and sarcasm have become strategic communicative resources through which Gen Z articulates social criticism, negotiates public issues, and actively participate in contemporary digital discourse.

Abstract

This study investigated the cognitive levels and constructive alignment reflected in a seventh-grade English teaching module at SMPN 24 Tangerang. The study aimed to classify the cognitive levels of learning objectives, learning activities, and assessment tasks based on Bloom's Revised Taxonomy and to examine the alignment among these instructional components using Biggs and Tang's Constructive Alignment Theory. A qualitative document analysis was employed, supported by classroom observations and teacher interviews to triangulate data. The data were obtained from Chapter 5 (Units 1–3) of the English teaching module adapted from English for Nusantara. The findings revealed that most instructional components were categorized at the understanding (C2) and applying (C3) levels, indicating the predominance of Lower Order Thinking Skills (LOTS). Nevertheless, one assessment task reached the evaluating level (C5) and two tasks reached the creating level (C6), showing limited integration of Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS). The study also found that the instructional components were generally aligned, although several assessment tasks required higher-order cognitive processes than those specified in the learning objectives.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the interpretation of English idioms in the Monsters, Inc movie through semantic and pragmasemantic approaches. The research addressed the issue that idiomatic expressions are difficult to understand literally without considering their contextual use. A descriptive qualitative method was employed, using documentation techniques by collecting data from the movie's transcript and subtitles, contextual meaning approaches from Leech and Palmer. The findings showed that the idioms in this film were mostly pure idioms, which convey non-literal meanings highly dependent on situational context. Idioms in the film functioned not only as linguistic elements but also as tools for expressing emotion, building character identity, and delivering humor. It was concluded that idiom comprehension in films can be enhanced through contextual interpretation. This study contributes to English language teaching by promoting the use of animated films as engaging and contextual learning media.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to classify, describe, and analyze the form and sound changes that occur in English borrowing in Indonesian across various registers found in the KBBI VI online dictionary. This research is a qualitative study aimed at answering how the changes in borrowing words are analyzed within the framework of lexicology. The instruments for this research are researchers, and the data were sourced from the Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary and the Indonesian Dictionary (KBBI VI) online version. The data on English borrowings in Indonesian from 86 registers in the KBBI VI online dictionary indicate that researchers identified only 28 registers and 125 words as English borrowings from the United Kingdom. The dominant register for English borrowings is the Chemistry register. Among the 125 processed borrowing words, phonological changes were found, particularly in vowels and consonants. The types of sound changes observed include: (1) Diphthongization, (2) Monophthongization, (3) Assimilation, (4) Lenition, (5) Metathesis, (6) Syncope, (7) Apocope, (8) Prothesis, (9) Epenthesis, (10) Paragoge, and (11) Double Consonant. The dominant type of sound change in English borrowing in Indonesian is monophthongization. This indicates that when Indonesian borrows words from English, it tends to be through substitution or adaptation to match the pronunciation of Indonesian words.

Abstract

This study explores the figurative expressions present in the commencement speech delivered by Taylor Swift at New York University in 2022. The study aims to pinpoint the various types of conceptual metaphors and to analyze the connection between literal and figurative meanings by using a cognitive semantic perspective. The goal is to show how metaphors serve not just as persuasive tools but also as cognitive instruments that assist audiences in grasping complex ideas. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed in this research, utilizing the Metaphor Identification Procedure (MIP) proposed by the Pragglejaz Group, together with the Conceptual Metaphor Theory developed by George Lakoff and Mark Johnson. The data for this analysis came from the transcript of Taylor Swift’s speech, from which 20 metaphorical phrases were chosen through purposive sampling. The results indicate that structural metaphors are the most prevalent, constituting 11 phrases (55%), while ontological metaphors account for 9 phrases (45%). Notably, no significant orientational metaphors were found in the address. Additionally, the analysis reveals that the ties between literal and figurative meanings are formed through cross-domain mapping, where tangible experiences clarify abstract ideas such as identity, emotional weight, adaptation, and direction in life. These results suggest that the metaphors used in the speech are crucial for shaping meaning and enhancing audience connection.

Abstract

Some people experience subjective complaints such as redness, itching, burning, or a sensation of heat in their eyes, which can be linked to the use of digital technology. This has led to a shift in human communication, where traditional face-to-face interactions are increasingly taking place in virtual spaces that are fast-paced and ever-changing, such as YouTube. This change doesn't just affect technical aspects, but also rebuilds the user's language identity, where language now serves as a strategic tool to build social connections and maintain a positive self-image. This study aims to examine the politeness mechanisms used by Ryu Kintaro in his interview video on the YouTube channel Tom MC Ifle, using the theory framework of Brown and Levinson and the principles of politeness from Leech. Subjective complaints may include symptoms such as red eyes, itching, burning, and a hot sensation. Pragmatics is a branch of linguistics that studies the conditions for the appropriate use of language in the communication process, which is very closely tied to the external context of language. The method used was a descriptive qualitative approach, involving the analysis of 28 speech data collected through the techniques of listening and recording. The research results show that positive politeness strategies were used in 64.3% of the interactions. This shows that the subject tends to use strategies such as sharing personal experiences, providing reasons, and building optimism to reduce face-threatening situations while also strengthening cooperation among communicators. This finding shows that politeness among Generation Alpha hasn't disappeared despite the stigma around digital slang language. Instead, it has changed its function to remain relevant, responsive, and adaptable in today's digital communication environment, helping to keep social relationships in harmony.
