Abstract

This study investigates the operational frameworks, regulatory challenges, and economic impacts of Shariah-Compliant Hotels (SCHs) in Malaysia, aiming to evaluate their role in advancing Islamic tourism and strengthening Malaysia’s position as a global leader in halal hospitality. Employing a mixed-method approach, the research integrates qualitative narrative analysis with quantitative data, including semi-structured interviews with 12 managers from MFAR-recognized hotels and a review of secondary sources such as government reports and certification guidelines. The Diffusion of Innovation (DOI) framework is used to assess how SCHs adopt and implement Islamic hospitality standards. The findings reveal that Malaysian SCHs successfully embed Islamic values in service delivery, offering halal-certified food, gender-segregated facilities, prayer spaces, and Shariah-aligned amenities. However, challenges remain—particularly fragmented certification systems between JAKIM and the Islamic Tourism Centre, lack of staff training, and unclear compliance standards. Despite these barriers, the sector contributes significantly to tourism growth, as evidenced by 5.33 million Muslim tourist arrivals in 2019, and attracts foreign direct investment, especially from Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. This study offers a more holistic understanding of SCHs by bridging theoretical perspectives and empirical findings. It recommends improved standardization, cross-agency coordination, and policy innovation to sustain Malaysia’s leadership in halal tourism and expand into areas such as Islamic fintech, halal medical tourism, and value-driven investment models.

Abstract

Research Objective: Investigates Muhammad Abduh's rational hermeneutics as a foundation for Islamic legal reform, exploring how his integration of reason ('aql), ethics, and revelation (naql) reconfigures Qur'anic interpretation to revitalize ijtihad and promote justice-aligned legal principles. Research Method: The research employs a qualitative design grounded in hermeneutical analysis and Islamic legal theory. It analyses key verses from Tafsir al-Manar, Tafsir Juz 'Amma, and Risalat al-Tawhid using textual, contextual, and comparative approaches to assess jurisprudential significance. Results: Abduh's tafsir consistently elevates ethical reasoning, public welfare, and maqāṣid al-sharīʿah above rigid textualism. His interpretations of verses concerning religious freedom (2:256), family law (4:3), justice (5:8), and gender equity (33:35) reflect a reformist orientation rooted in moral deliberation. Findings and Implications: The findings reveal a transformative legal paradigm reframing Islamic law as an adaptable, ethically driven system. Abduh's approach supports institutional reform and offers credible alternatives to formalist legal reasoning in addressing pluralism, governance, and human rights. Conclusion: Abduh's rational hermeneutics demonstrates that Islamic legal thought can be renewed through a principled balance of textual fidelity and moral responsiveness, affirming ijtihad's enduring relevance in contemporary legal discourse. Contribution: The study enriches Islamic legal scholarship by offering an analytical model bridging classical jurisprudence and modern ethical challenges, positioning tafsir as a meaningful tool in legal reform. Limitations and Suggestions: The study's limitation lies in its textual focus without assessing practical implementation. Future research should examine the framework's applicability in digital ethics, environmental jurisprudence, and policy-making

Abstract

The hadith about “Prophet Solomon slept with his wives (tens/hundreds) in one night” has been presented as one example of the contradiction between hadith and logic. The hadith is described as erotic and concluded as an example of forgery by hadith scholars. This study aims to clarify this accusation, examine some responses and compare ideas from important findings from Jewish and Christian sources. The research data were obtained from nine major hadith books (kutub al-tis'ah), hadith commentaries, Biblical sources, and related articles. The data were analyzed descriptively and analytically using a qualitative approach. This study found that this hadith meets the requirements of a valid hadith because it is found in hadith books and is strengthened by other valid hadiths with meaning. Thus, the accusation of forgery is completely baseless. The number of wives should be understood in general as an indication of the number of wives, not including a specific number. This hadith meaningfully indicates that it speaks of the miracles of Prophet Solomon.

Abstract

The paper discusses method of legal interpretation as set forth by Abdullahi Ahmed An-Naim in his works. His legal views takes a historical and contextualist approach in interpreting the text with critical reinterpretation of traditional understanding of the texts by taking into account the purpose of the Syari‘ (the Law Giver) as well as the underlying principle and ideal of the Shariah. By way of deconstruction the Shariah embodies new legal postulates contextually deducted from the text which corresponds to the current situation and context. The method of study is based on qualitative technique in the form of content analysis. It draws upon Miles & Huberman’s analytical methods and techniques, namely reducing and presenting data and drawing conclusion. The finding shows that Abdullahi Ahmed An-Naim aspired toward comprehensive and broad range of legal reform by accommodating and fitting the text with the legal provisions and requirement of modern context based on the instrumentality of maslahah. It sought to reform the legal aspects of Islamic law (syariah) through independent reasoning (ijtihad) and collective argument considering the possible spirit and perspective of its viability and continuity which developed and evolved in dynamic historical and cultural context. Keywords: Abdullahi Ahmed An-Naim, deconstruction, Islamic law

Abstract

This study fills a critical gap in understanding how Islamic values are meaningfully integrated into vocational education programs across Indonesia's Islamic higher education institutions. It investigates the integration of Islamic values into the vocational training program at the Faculty of Tarbiyah, IAIN Bone, and hypothesizes that such integration significantly contributes to students' character development. Using a qualitative approach based on a logic model mini-assessment, the research involved interviews, observations, and document analysis to evaluate the program's inputs, activities, outputs, outcomes, and impacts. The findings reveal that Islamic values are embedded not only through formal curriculum but also through informal mentoring, a religiously supportive environment, and reflective practices. These results highlight that strong foundational inputs and intentional soft skills development, reinforced by educators’ role modeling, effectively shape students' character and offer a replicable framework for value-based vocational education.
