Abstract

This paper is a study antropolinguistic with behavioral problems speaking, the characteristics of linguistic and cultural representation in the language of a question to take a place at the Floating Market Lok Lok Baitan located Baintan River District village of Tabuk Banjar District, South Kalimantan. Floating Market is a traditional market held on a tidal river. The method used is the method entholinguistic, coupled with the techniques developed in other subject areas, such as: the development of pragmatics, conversation analysis, participatory observation, interviews and recording. Linguistic evidence found in this study with regard to terminology: (1) the floating markets, (2) boats and kelotok, (3) transaction, (4) the propriety of the transaction, and (5) form of address.

Abstract

The teaching of grammar is frequently uninteresting so most of students are reluctant to learn this subject. Inviting them to learn the grammar by incorporating the use of technology may become a new way to attract their attention. In the present research, the writer conducted a research to compare the impact of grammar instructions on two classes, which used two different techniques to teach grammar: conventional method and video-making activities (VMA). There were 51 students of English Department at State Institute for Islamic Studies who participated in the research. The data were collected by using a test to measure their grammar mastery and a questionnaire to understand their respond toward the method. The resultshowed that the students who were taught by using the VMA had no better grammar mastery compared to those who were taught using the conventional method. However, the result of questionnaire yielded that most of the students agreed that the VMA was fun and interesting. This activity, according to them, also promoted creativity and technology literacy.

Abstract

This research is conducted to find out the mastery of English students department in TOEFL in Structure and written Expression in South Kalimantan of IAIN Antasari Banjarmasin, UNLAM, STKIP PGRI, and UNISKA and to know types of questions in TOEFL which are very difficult and difficult for students to answer. The researcher tested 80 fifth semester students of English Department at IAIN ANTASARI, UNLAM, STKIP PGRI and UNISKA in South Kalimantan on the academic year 2011/2012 , used test distributed to 80 students in the fifth semester The TOEFL prediction test was used to gather the data.  The result showed the mean score of TOEFL of academic year 2011/2012 classified in beginner category with the mean score 418. The results of TOEFL prediction shows that the mean score of UNLAM’s students is 469, folllowed by IAIN’s which is 454, UNISKA’s is 384, while STKIP PGRI’s is 367. Structure and Writen Expression is the most difficult type of questions are relative pronoun, possessive pronoun, personal pronoun and passive voice.

Abstract

 Language teaching of literature is the way to encourage the students ability to give responses to what they read.  This way can in one hand promote literacy and critical thinking of the students and facilitate students to build a learner center environment in learning.  In this article the writer tries to raise and discuss a literature stream of a novel A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini,it is still taking background of war going on in Afganistan. This novel has discussed the naturalism of literature which draws people's lives that portrayed in the very low life, tragic, and pathetic. It tells the story of two women who are suffering due to war and forced marriage. It also deals with an infinite love, incredible affection, sacrifice and struggle of different ages of two women, but became one family because of a polygamous marriage. This novel not only tells the life-wrenching character with family conflict, but readers are also invited to imagine and to feel pain as a result of an endless war in Afghanistan. Literature may also have a wider educational function in the classroom in that, it can help to stimulate the imagination of students to develop their critical abilities and to increase their emotional awareness

Abstract

Assessment is often considered as the most important part in instruction. The way of learners taught and the activity carried out in the classroom are greatly influenced by assessment, and the success of a learning program is commonly determined by the result of assessment. This research focuses on the TOEFL test giving the teachers opportunity to prove that they can communicate ideas effectively by simulating classroom and teacher life comunication. This research is then conducted to find out the English teachers’ mastery in TOEFL Prediction in listening comprehension, structure and written expression, and reading comprehension at Junior and Senior High Schools in Kotabaru Regency, South Kalimantan. The research form is a field research by using written test, observation, interview, and documentary technique in collecting data. The subjects of this research were 16 English teachers of Junior and Senior High Schools in Kotabaru Regency, South Kalimantan. The result shows that the teachers’ mastery of TOEFL Prediction in listening comprehension, structure and written expression, and reading comprehension is classified into good category with the mean score 423.06. It recommends English teachers in Kotabaru to apply some different strategies in teaching listening comprehension, structure and written expression, and reading comprehension of each meeting to get high motivation and interest for both teachers and students. Teachers should develop their professions joining some trainings related to English instruction, encourage their students to practice  skimming and scanning skill and identify the major poins of the passage, and use the context for vocabulary mastery by listening comprehension and for structure and written expression as well in the teaching and learning through games and fun activities.

Abstract

Curriculum is the foundation of the teaching-learning process. One of the most important activities of the university is the development of curriculum or course outlines in consonance with the national and international demands and realities.This study was conducted to the 29 alumni of English Department of Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teachers Training. The data needed were the perspective, opinion and suggestion from the alumni of English Education Department Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teachers Training of IAIN Antasari Banjarmasin. These data gained from the result of questionaire, in depth-interview and documentation. This research found out  that the course of English department curriculum has given perspective for alumni which most of them said that this curriculum has been run well and have good content. The courses have to be developed to address specific set of needs and to cover a given set of objectives. This English curriculum  develop students’ awareness of the learning process and their role as learners by developing their knowledge and skills, how to use reference words,  design to assist them in independent study, awareness of their own learning styles, strengths and weakness, familiarity with various techniques, foreign culture and  nature of learning strategies.

Abstract

Indonesian is well-known, and it is taught at institutions across the world, including Australia. This study aims at describing prospective students, teachers, lecturers,' practitioners, and the general public's reactions to the Indonesian Language Education Study Program at the Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training of UIN Antasari Banjarmasin and identified data will be described as findings and discussed using Morrison's theory of needs analysis profile for the program readiness. A survey is used in this investigation. The questionnaires and interviews in this research were both open-ended. The technique used is a questionnaire technique using Google Forms by distributing questionnaires directly to respondents, namely 173 prospective students were class XII high school students, 24 were Indonesian language teachers, and 104 were education practitioners, lecturers, supervisors, and members of the community from several districts and cities in South Kalimantan. The plan to launch the Indonesian Language Education Study Program at UIN Antasari Banjarmasin received a positive reaction from many stakeholders and will be implemented immediately. Graduates of this degree may become professional educators with Islamic perspectives and Indonesian language teachers for international and national schools, as well as Indonesian for foreign speakers with distinctive qualities. Before a new study program starts, educators, teaching staff, and infrastructure must all be carefully prepared, as must the program's documentation. Therefore, the result of this study is expected to be the consideration by the university for opening the Indonesian Language Education Study Program at UIN Antasari Banjarmasin.
