Abstract

Genetic variability is critical in order to create candidates for new superior varieties. This research objective was to evaluate the performance and variability of agronomical traits on the mungbean SSD F4 V422H/129 population. The research was conducted at IPB University, Bogor, from March to June 2021. The SSD F4 VR422H/129 population (378 genotypes with single plant as a representative of one genotype) and five check varieties were evaluated. The treatments were arranged in augmented design for RCBD in three replications. For agronomical traits, every F4 plant and 10 sample plants for each check variety were observed. Statistical analysis includes mean, frequency-distribution, heritability, genetic variability, correlation. The days to flowering, days to harvesting, generative periods, plant height on F4 V422H/129 were not significantly different from Vima 5, while total pod number, total pod weight, total seed weight, pod length were significantly higher. The agronomical traits were affected by genetic factors (heritability 0.71-0.99%), except for days to harvest. Based on the high genetic variability (CGV 0.62-0.64%), it was possible to select of total pod weight, total seed weight, or pod length in the next generation V422H/129. The total seed weight had a significant positive correlation with total pod weight and pod length.

Abstract

Evaluation of kidney bean genotypes in the lowlands is a preliminary step in a plant breeding program to develop lowland-adaptive varieties. This study aims (1) to evaluate agronomic characters, (2) analyze the associations between yield component traits and total yield, and (3) select kidney bean genotypes adapted to lowland environment. The study was conducted in lowlands (185 m asl), Leuwikopo Experimental Station, IPB, Bogor, from March to June 2023. Ten kidney bean genotypes were arranged in a randomized complete block design. Observations included growth characters and yield components, followed by heritability, correlations, and multiple regression. Genotype was significantly affects plant height, total productive bunches, total pods number, total pod weight, total seed weight, and pod length. Characters with high broad sense heritability (h2bs>60%) were plant height, total productive bunches, pod length, total pod weight, and total seed weight. Total seed weight was identified as a selection trait for adaptation in lowland. Adaptive genotypes in the lowlands exhibited high total pod and seed weight, taller canopy, numerous productive clusters, and early maturity. Genotypes KM06, KM03, and KM04 showed the highest total seed weight per plant, indicating superior adaptation potential in lowland environments.

Abstract

Jack bean or koro pedang is a potential source as a soybean substitute for food and feed. In production, the plant is also useful in crop rotation and intercropping to support sustainable agriculture systems. However, jack bean production in Indonesia is still challenging. One of the obstacles in the production is the flowers and pods dropping, which reduces yield markedly. This study aimed to evaluate the source and timing of additional potassium fertilizer on the generative phase and yield of jack bean. The experimental design used a randomized complete block design with two factors, i.e., the source of potassium fertilizer as the first factor consisting of five levels: no fertilizer application, base fertilizer, base fertilizer + goat manure, base fertilizer + rice husk ash, and base fertilizer + KCl. The second factor was fertilization time, i.e., at 46 and 121 days after planting. The treatment of the potassium fertilizer source and fertilization timing affected several generative characters, but did not have much effect on productivity. Future studies should identify other potassium fertilizer sources to find the optimal dose to support plants in the generative phase. Keywords: additional potassium; flower drop; koro pedang; pod formation

Abstract

Households are one of the contributors to organic and inorganic waste. Generally, the family needs to manage waste independently. The concept of waste recycling can be applied at the household level. The aim of waste management in the Dosen Mengabdi Reguler 2022 was to provide alternative solutions for processing organic and inorganic waste in the household based on the recycling concept. The activities were carried out from July‒November 2022 in one of the villages around the IPB campus locations, namely the Taman Darmaga Permai 2, Cihideung Ilir, Ciampea, Bogor. The core activities consist of discussions and demonstrations about compost, coenzymes, re-growing vegetable plants, and the culture of mung bean sprouts from Vima 1 and Vimil 1 varieties. About 42.9% of the 14 participants sorted household waste, and 28.6% managed waste. Compost from organic waste was harvested within one month after the process, while coenzymes were harvested after three months. Ecoenzymes were attractive to all participants as a solution for processing waste. About 50% of participants favor growing vegetables and 21.4% re-grow vegetable waste. Katuk and Welsh onion plants have 100% growth and 90% survival rates. All participants had never sprouted mung bean seeds. The sprouts can be harvested 1 to 3 days after sowing as needed. The Vima 1 mung bean variety has a sweet sprout taste and produces 657.9 g of sprouts from 100 g of seeds, while the Vimil 1 taste is slightly astringent with a lower sprout production of 543.8 g.

Abstract

Cayenne pepper is one of the important horticultural commodities and has high economic value for Indonesian people. The demand for cayenne pepper in Indonesia was relatively high, especially for household consumption. Therefore, superior varieties were needed to meet the needs of cayenne pepper in Indonesia. One way to guarantee the superiority of varieties and the validity of variety descriptions was to conduct yield testing. Our research aims to evaluate the performance and yield of seven genotypes of cayenne pepper. This research was carried out from March 2023 to September 2023 at Leuwikopo Experimental Garden, IPB University. It consisted of one factor: ten genotypes (seven genotypes and three control varieties). Experimental design in our research using randomized complete block design with three replications. The results showed that there were differences in performance and yield between cayenne pepper genotypes. The flowering ages of all genotypes ranged from 41.33 - 45.67 DAP with the harvest ages ranging from 83.33 - 92.67 DAP. The percentage of plants observed at the end of harvest ranged from 37.50 - 70.83% with the Rawita F1 variety showing the lowest percentage (37.50%). F1.372340 genotype was the highest productivity genotype, reaching 4.80 t.ha-1. The productivity of F1.372340 was higher than control varieties, which ranged from 1.48 to 2.72 t.ha-1. Line’s genotype had a shelf life ranging from 9.30 - 15.00 DAH which was the same or better than the control varieties which ranged from 9.67-12.33 DAH.

Abstract. Wirnas D, Oktanti N, Rahmi HN, Andriani D, Faturrahman, Rini EP, Marwiyah S, Trikoesoemaningtyas, Sopandie D. 2021. Genetic analysis for designing an ideotype of high-yielding sorghum based on existing lines performance. Biodiversitas 22: 5286-5292. Sorghum is a potential crop as an alternative and substitutes food source for rice or wheat. The ideal type of sorghum design for a high-yielding trait is needed to streamline the process of selecting the best genotype that can be developed into pure lines and released as varieties. The research purpose was to design the ideal type of sorghum based on the morphological, physiological, and agronomic characters that contribute to a high-yielding trait. The research was carried out at the Agriculture Research Center for Biotechnology and Genetic Resources, Bogor, West Java, Indonesia and experimental field of IPB University, Bogor, Indonesia. The genetic materials used in this study consisted of 56 F5 sorghum lines advanced from three segregating populations and 8 check varieties. The ideal type of sorghum to obtain a genotype with high grain weight per panicle was to have a phenotypic value of 150-235 cm for plant height (medium plant height). The physiological and agronomic characters obtained to design the ideal type of sorghum were stem diameter, leaf number, flag leaf area, leaf greenness, green leaf percentage, and panicle diameter with the minimum value for the traits are 17 mm, 10, 209 cm2, 44 CCI units, 48%, and 49 mm, respectively. This ideotype is going to be used as selection criteria for selection of high-yielding sorghum genotypes.

Abstract

Abstract. Ishthifaiyyah SA, Syukur M, Trikoesoemaningtyas, Maharijaya A, Marwiyah S. 2023. Yield-related traits and proximate content of winged bean for seed production purpose. Biodiversitas 24: 3609-3615. The winged bean is an underutilized plant that can produce valuable seeds with great nutrient content. Meanwhile, the lack of improved genotypes limits its large-scale cultivation. This study aimed to evaluate the flowering and maturity time of winged bean lines and elaborate on various traits correlated with the seed yield. We also performed the seeds' proximate analysis to unravel each line's nutrient content. This study was conducted in Bogor, Indonesia, between April and October 2020. Hybridization between two distinct parents had successfully developed early flowering winged bean genotypes in its progeny. The H4P and L3 had the highest seed yield (1.40 t ha-1) with brown and purple seed colors, respectively. The dried pod weight (0.56), young pod weight (0.36), and the number of dried pods (0.39) had a positive direct effect yet were still smaller than their correlation coefficient. Thus, the selection process to obtain high-yielding winged bean genotypes can be conducted simultaneously through those traits. The evaluated winged bean genotypes had various fat and protein content ranging from 11.10% to 16.48% and 28.81% to 33.45%, respectively. This information can be used as future selection criteria for the winged bean breeding program.

Abstract

Abstract. Todingrante AT, Ritonga AW, Marwiyah S. 2025. Genetic diversity and agronomic morphological characteristics of 22 hybrid purple sweet corn genotypes. Biodiversitas 26: 4124-4136. Purple sweet corn (Zea mays var. saccharata) is a nutritionally valuable crop known for its high anthocyanin content, which functions as a potent antioxidant. This study aimed to assess the genetic diversity and agronomic performance of 22 hybrid genotypes of purple sweet corn developed by Institut Pertanian Bogor. Field trials were conducted at the Pasir Kuda Experimental Station using a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Eighteen quantitative and fifteen qualitative traits were evaluated to estimate genetic variability, heritability, and phenotypic expression. Analysis of variance indicated significant genotypic differences for the majority of traits. Broad-sense heritability estimates ranged from 8.24% (leaf width) to 96.99% (silking date), with high heritability observed for ear diameter (57.08%), ear weight with husk (66.40%), and Productivity (67.68%). The genotypic and phenotypic coefficients of variation revealed substantial genetic diversity across genotypes. Correlation analysis demonstrated that ear weight with husk (r = 0.68) and ear weight without husk exhibited strong and significant positive correlations with overall yield, highlighting their importance as effective selection criteria in breeding programs. Additional yield-contributing traits such as ear length, ear diameter, and number of kernel rows also showed positive associations with productivity, reinforcing their utility in selecting superior genotypes. Cluster analysis grouped the genotypes based on morphological and agronomic similarities. Genotype G19 showed exceptional performance, with a high yield (18.55 tons ha?¹) and deep kernel pigmentation, making it a promising candidate for future breeding. These results provide valuable insights for developing high-yielding, anthocyanin rich purple sweet corn cultivars with enhanced agronomic performance and nutritional quality.
