Abstract

The aim of this study was to find out the emotional experiences of students in online learning English using an online platform in the middle of Covid-19. The research was a single case study. Data were garnered from the results of interviews and documents. The participants in this study were three students at a senior high school in Luwuk, Central Sulawesi. The researcher analyzed the data thematically as proposed by Braun Clarke (2006). The finding showed that online learning English affected the emotional experiences of the students. The students experienced a positive emotion, i.e happiness. The happiness feeling was driven by the provision of feedback and explanation by teachers before giving tasks, allowing the students to send their tasks on the platform they wanted, explaining the materials through Zoom Application, and did not provide tasks in each meeting. However, they also experienced negative emotions such as frustration, anger, and anxiety in English learning using an online platform. They perceived frustration because online English learning was difficult for them. In this case, they had to purchase internet quota, did not meet in person with the teacher, had limitations of time, felt bored due to frequent use of Zoom Meeting, experienced many disturbances, such as; their smartphones’ memory filled up fast because of getting many files from their teachers. Consequently, the negative emotions decreased the students’ time invested and the amount of knowledge gained from the learning process. The study implies that learning English using an online platform influenced students’ emotions

Abstract

This research was aimed to obtain the most problematic dental fricative sounds to pronounce and to determine the factor caused by the students to produce error in pronouncing dental fricative sounds. The researchers applied descriptive qualitative design by purposive sampling technique to choose the participants. There were 15 participants taken from the first-year students of English Education Study Program 2020/2021. The instruments of data collection were documents and interview. The document is in the form of video speaking from the participant, used to analyze students pronunciation and the interview used to decide the factor of students error. The result of the research showed that the frequency of students error were 15 percent in /θ/ sound and 85 percent in /ð/ sound. Most of the students substituted sound /θ/ with /t/ and sound /ð/ with /d/. They made the error because they have interference from their mother tongue. Thus, the most problematic dental fricative sound is /ð/ sound and the error caused by the students is interlingual error.

A pretest was given, followed by different treatments for both classes. The experimental class used English videos as learning media, while the control class did not. After giving the posttest, the researcher analyzed the results statistically to determine the significant difference between both classes. The results show that the mean score of the experimental class significantly developed from 36.30 to 56.54, while the mean score of the control class developed from 38.23 to 42.64. The hypothesis testing results also show that the t-counted value (3.188) was higher than the t-table value (1.688) at a significance level of 0.05, thus confirming that the use of English videos is effective in developing students' speaking skills of grade VIII of SMP Negeri 12 Palu.

Abstract

This study aims to determine whether the effect of tongue twisters can improve the pronunciation of eleventh-grade students at SMA Negeri 1 Lembo. A quasi-experimental design was employed with a sample of 64 students selected using random sampling techniques. Random sampling was chosen to reduce bias, produce a representative sample, facilitate statistical analysis, and allow for replicability of the research. Data were collected through writing tests administered twice as pre-test and post-test. The pre-test was given to the experimental group before the treatment, while the post-test was administered afterward. The researcher collected and analyzed the data using the formula proposed by (Cohen et al., 2007) and SPSS 22. The results indicated a significant improvement in the pronunciation scores of the experimental group, with a pre-test average of 51.56 and a post-test average of 77.97. In contrast, the control group showed a smaller improvement. The Mann-Whitney test revealed a significant difference between the two groups (p < 0.05), indicating that innovative teaching methods can enhance students' pronunciation skills. These findings suggest integrating interactive activities into English language teaching, and training for teachers is necessary to implement this method effectively. The study also opens up opportunities for further exploration of other variations of games in teaching pronunciation.

Abstract

Self-confidence plays a crucial role in second language learning, particularly in enhancing speaking ability. In many senior high schools in Indonesia, English is taught as a foreign language (EFL), and students often struggle with speaking due to low self-confidence. This study investigates the correlation between self-confidence and speaking ability among eleventh grade students at MA Nurul Muttahidah Pinotu. Employing a quantitative research approach with a correlational design, the study involved 25 students as the total sample. The instruments used were a self-confidence questionnaire consisting of 20 items based on a Likert scale and a speaking test assessing five aspects: pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, fluency, and comprehension. The data were analyzed using SPSS version 24, including normality and linearity tests, followed by Pearson Product Moment correlation analysis. The results revealed a statistically significant positive correlation (r = 0.505, p = 0.010) between students’ self-confidence and their speaking ability. This finding suggests that the more confident students are, the better their speaking performance. However, the small sample size is a limitation of this study, and further research with larger samples is recommended. These results highlight the importance of fostering students’ self-confidence to improve speaking skills in EFL contexts, especially in underrepresented educational settings such as senior high schools.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to determine whether the Duolingo application can enhance the English vocabulary of grade VIII students at SMPN 1 Sindue Tombusabora. This research focused on teaching concrete nouns and action verbs, including their spelling, meaning, and use in sentences. A quasi-experimental design was employed, involving two classes: an experimental class (VIII C) and a control class (VIII A), each consisting of 20 students selected through purposive sampling. Data collection was conducted using pretests and posttests to measure changes in vocabulary knowledge before and after the intervention. The experimental class utilized the Duolingo application, while the control class did not receive this treatment. After the posttest, the researcher used statistical analysis to evaluate whether there was a significant difference between the two classes. Based on the data analysis tests, the mean pretest score for the experimental class was 30.62, compared to 35.97 for the control class. After administering the treatment, the mean score on the posttest for the experimental class was 66.45, which is significantly higher than the mean score of 36.96 for the control class. Using a significance level of 0.05, the researcher found that the calculated t-value of 7.50 exceeded the t-value of 1.687 from the t-table. It indicates that the hypothesis was accepted. In other words, grade VIII students at SMPN 1 Sindue Tombusabora can increase their English vocabulary by using the Duolingo application.
