Abstract

Introduction: Impression material is a material used to obtain negative impressions of teeth and oral tissues. Alginate impressions have deficiencies in dimensional stability, thus affecting the accuracy of the impression. The imbibition and syneresis processes affect the dimensional stability of the alginate. To overcome the change in dimensional stability, modification of alginate with sago starch was carried out. Purpose: The aim of this study was to determine the effect of adding sago starch (Metroxylon sago) at concentrations of 32.5%, 37.5%,   and    42.5%    on    the    dimensional    stability    of alginate. Methods: In this study, a comparison of the dimensional stability of pure alginate and alginate-added sago starch will be observed. The method used was an experimental laboratory study with a pre-and post-test control group design. Results: The mean difference in the dimensional measurements of the two treatments in group A was 0.0110; group B was -0.0021; group C was -0.0006; and group D was -0.0016. Statistically, there was no significant difference (p>0.05) between filling for 0 minutes and 30 minutes in the alginate group with the addition of sago starch. Conclusion: There was a change in the dimensional stability of the gypsum impressions of pure alginate groups with the addition of 32.5%, 37.5%, and 42.5% sago starch. Abstract

Children's dental health is very important to ensure the child's nutritional status, speaking ability and attractive appearance. Nutrition, diet and dental health in children are closely related, especially in children who are in the growth and development phase. Good quality and proper nutrition is very important to support dental health. Likewise, dental health is also important for adequate nutritional intake. If the teeth and mouth are healthy, then nutritional intake will be optimal, and if nutrition is optimal then the growth and development of the teeth and mouth will also be optimal. As many as 89% of children in Indonesia suffer from dental disease. A number of surveys show that more than a third of the toddler population has experienced toothache and one sixth of them have had at least one tooth extracted. The growth and development of teeth is influenced by nutrition. Healthy dentition will occur if all nutritional elements are available in sufficient quantities. The aim of the activity: to provide education to young children about the importance of nutrition for the growth and development of teeth and mouth. The activity method used is the tell-show-do method with presentations using power point media, posters, models of teeth and toothbrushes, as well as examination of children's teeth and mouths. This method is one of the most appropriate methods for providing education to early childhood. Results of the activity: increased knowledge of children and the emergence of a sense of courage when having a dental examination by a dentist. Conclusion: This activity has a positive impact on young children because children understand better that there is a connection between nutrition and oral health.

Abstract

Background: Infectious diseases, particularly viral infections, represent a major global health concern, with significant implications for oral health. Despite their clinical relevance, oral manifestations of viral infections are often underdiagnosed due to their complex and varied presentations. Early recognition of these manifestations can aid in timely diagnosis and management, improving overall patient outcomes. Objective: This study aims to systematically review the oral manifestations associated with viral infections to provide a comprehensive reference for healthcare professionals in diagnosing and managing such conditions. Methods: A systematic review was conducted using five databases, including PubMed and Scopus, to identify relevant studies published between 2014 and 2024. Keywords such as "oral manifestation" and "viral infection" were used. Eligible studies were selected based on predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria, focusing on articles in English with clinical relevance to oral health. Data were extracted independently by multiple authors and analyzed to identify patterns and significant findings regarding oral manifestations of viral infections. Results: The review identified 133 articles, with 24 studies meeting the inclusion criteria. Key findings revealed that human herpesviruses, including HSV-1, HSV-2, VZV, EBV, CMV, HHV-6, HHV-7, and HHV-8, frequently present with distinct oral lesions. These lesions range from vesicles and ulcers to gingival overgrowth and vascular tumors. The study highlights the diagnostic importance of oral findings, particularly in immunocompromised patients. Conclusion: Oral manifestations are critical diagnostic indicators of viral infections and provide an opportunity for early disease recognition. A thorough understanding of these manifestations can enhance clinical diagnosis, reduce healthcare costs, and improve patient outcomes. Future research should focus on developing diagnostic algorithms incorporating oral and systemic findings for better clinical utility.

Abstract

Periodontal disease is a chronic inflammatory condition initiated by microbial dysbiosis and driven by host immune responses, notably the overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which contribute to tissue damage. Vitamin C (ascorbic acid), a potent antioxidant, plays a role in collagen synthesis and immune regulation. Several studies have proposed vitamin C as an adjunct in periodontal therapy, yet its effectiveness remains unclear. This systematic review aims to evaluate the effect of vitamin C supplementation on clinical periodontal parameters in patients with periodontal disease. A comprehensive literature search was conducted in PubMed and Scopus for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) published between January 2015 and June 2025. Included studies investigated vitamin C supplementation in patients with periodontal disease without systemic conditions, pregnancy, lactation, or medication use. Studies involving vitamin C in combination with other nutrients without a separate vitamin C-only group were excluded. Data extraction and analysis followed the PRISMA guidelines. Four RCTs met the inclusion criteria. Significant clinical improvements were observed in periodontal parameters following non-surgical periodontal therapy (NSPT). However, the addition of vitamin C supplementation alone did not consistently provide significant improvements beyond NSPT alone. One study showed greater improvements when vitamin C was combined with melatonin, and another suggested potential benefits from guava—a natural source of vitamin C and polyphenols—over synthetic vitamin C. Current evidence suggests that while vitamin C supplementation may offer modest anti-inflammatory and antioxidant benefits, it does not consistently enhance clinical outcomes in periodontal therapy when used alone.

Abstract

Introduction: Lactobacillus acidophilus is one of the dominant bacteria that plays a significant role in the development of dental caries. This bacterium produces extracellular polysaccharides that facilitate bacterial adhesion to dental plaque. One of the approaches to preventing dental caries is the use of antibacterial agents to inhibit bacterial growth in dental plaque. Averrhoa bilimbi (cucumber tree fruit) leaves have the potential to act as antibacterial agents due to the presence of active compounds that can inhibit bacterial growth. Aim: To determine the effect of Averrhoa bilimbi (cucumber tree fruit) leaf extract on inhibiting the growth of Lactobacillus acidophilus ATCC 4356. Methods: This study was an experimental laboratory with a post-test only control group design. The concentrations of Averrhoa bilimbi leaf extract used were 6.25%, 12.5%, 25%, and 50%, and a negative control of aquadest (sterile water). Results: The analysis with One Way ANNOVA showed p-value < 0.05, indicating a significant effect of Averrhoa bilimbi leaf extract in inhibiting the growth of Lactobacillus acidophilus ATCC 4356. Conclusion: Averrhoa bilimbi (cucumber tree fruit) leaf extract has an effect on inhibiting the growth of Lactobacillus acidophilus ATCC 4356.
