Abstract

This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of Game-Based Learning through the Wordwall application in improving students’ vocabulary mastery at SMK Kesehatan Medika Farma. The subjects of this study were 34 tenth-grade students of the TLM (Medical Laboratory Technology) class, selected using random sampling technique to ensure varied student proficiency levels. A preliminary observation revealed that students’ English ability, especially in vocabulary, was still limited, affecting their reading and writing perfomance. The research employed a Classroom Action Research (CAR) design conducted in two cycles. The instruments used included a vocabulary test consisting of 15 multiple-choice participation and motivation during the learning process. Quantitative data were obtained from the pre-liminary study, cycle I, and cycle II results, while with qualitative data were derived from classroom observations. The data analysis combined quantitative and qualitative approaches. The findings revealed that the integration of Wordwall as a Game-Based Learning medium effectively enhanced students’ vocabulary mastery, motivation, and classroom engagement. The use of interactive digital games made learning more enjoyable, promoted active participation, and supported students’ retention of new vocabulary.

Abstract

Vocabulary is a fundamental aspect for language learners, including English as a foreign language in Indonesia. To master the four language skills (speaking, reading, listening, and writing), the main thing is to fulfil vocabulary. This quantitative research, with a pre-experimental one group pre-test and post-test design, will explore the theory and application of the strategy proposed by Brown and Payne 1994. The research aims to see the extent to which reading narrative texts as a vocabulary learning strategy (VLS) can affect the 11th grade students’ vocabulary acquisition. Data collection will be done through a 22-item multiple-choice vocabulary test as the target vocabulary and given at the beginning of the research (pre-test), as well as at the end after the treatment (post-test). The sample of this research were 28 students of the 11th grade class B SMA Muhammadiyah 2 Wuluhan. The data obtained is analysed using statistical analysis with tests using SPSS version 27.0.1. The results of this study showed a significant effect after implementing reading narrative text as the vocabulary learning strategy on the 11th grade students’ vocabulary acquisition. It is hoped that the results of this research can make a meaningful contribution to the existing literature on the effects of using reading narrative texts as a vocabulary learning strategy on students' vocabulary acquisition, and implement the concept in their teaching practice

Abstract

This study aims to analyze and describe the forms of Madurese language interference on the pronunciation skills of EFL students at SMP Negeri 1 Randuagung. The study uses a descriptive qualitative method with data collection techniques through observation, interviews, and documentation. The results show that Madurese language interference appears predominantly in the phonological aspect, especially in the form of consonant substitution (/v/ to /f/, /ʃ/ to /s/, and /θ/ to /t/), difficulty in distinguishing long and short vowels, omission of final consonants, rigid and monotonous intonation. This pattern of errors indicates phonological transfer from the mother tongue, which affects students' English pronunciation. These findings support the theory of language transfer, which states that the sound system of the first language influences the production of sounds in the second language. Pedagogically, these research results emphasize the importance of phonetic awareness-based pronunciation learning strategies and sound contrast exercises to reduce the influence of the mother tongue and improve students' pronunciation accuracy.
