Abstract

The equal sign is an important concept in learning mathematics karena it is used in almost all branches of mathematics, but not many studies in Indonesia have made the equal sign the focus of research. This study aims to explore how students from elementary school to college students understand the equal sign in the context of arithmetic and algebra at school. A qualitative comparative analysis can be used to analyze several cases in complex situations so that it fits the purpose of this study. Participants consisted of 6 elementary school students, 14 junior high school students, 7 high school students and 3 college students in Bandung. The results of the study indicate that the equal sign is still interpreted narrowly as "result" or a sign to put the Menjawab, and has dependence on computational methods in solving problems and drawing conclusions. Thus, it can be concluded that students' understanding of the equal sign is still at the basic level. The results of this study show evidence that the operational meaning of the equal sign that students have when learning arithmetic will not change by itself without the stimulus provided by the teacher, and even tends to cause obstacles when students learn equations in algebra.Tanda sama dengan merupakan konsep penting dalam pembelajaran matematika karena digunakan pada hampir seluruh cabang matematika, namun belum banyak penelitian di Indonesia yang menjadikan tanda sama dengan sebagai fokus penelitian. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengeksplorasi bagaimana para siswa dari mulai sekolah dasar hingga mahasiswa memahami tanda sama dengan dalam konteks aritmatika dan aljabar di sekolah. A qualitative comparative analysis dapat digunakan untuk menganalisis beberapa kasus dalam situasi yang kompleks sehingga sesuai dengan tujuan penelitian ini. Partisipan terdiri dari 6 siswa SD, 14 siswa SMP, 7 siswa SMA dan 3 Mahasiswa di Bandung. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa tanda sama dengan masih dimaknai secara sempit yaitu sebagai “menghasilkan” atau tanda untuk meletakkan jawaban, serta memiliki kebergantungan terhadap metode komputasi dalam menyelesaikan masalah dan mengambil kesimpulan. Dengan demikian, dapat disimpulkan bahwa pemahaman siswa tentang tanda sama dengan masih berada di tingkat dasar.

Abstract

This study explored the perceptions of 51 prospective elementary school teachers selected using purposive sampling technique regarding the multiplication symbol (×) in arithmetic operations. Using a qualitative hermeneutic phenomenological approach, data were collected through task-based interviews administered to education students specializing in elementary education. The tasks were designed to explore candidates’ understanding and interpretation of the ‘×’ symbol, including uncovering conceptual images, understanding the ‘×’ symbol in different contexts, ability to represent the ‘×’ symbol, flexibility in relating the ‘×’ symbol among concepts, and problem-solving skills. Data analysis involved thematic coding and interpretive analysis to uncover patterns and insights into candidates’ cognitive frameworks. The findings revealed significant variation in candidates’ understanding of the ‘×’ symbol, influenced by their educational background and personal experiences with mathematics. This study highlights the need for improved mathematics instruction and curriculum design to equip future teachers with a deep and accurate understanding of arithmetic symbols, which is critical for effective mathematics teaching at the elementary level.

Abstract

Kegiatan "Aksi Lingkungan: Praktek Membuat Ecobrick di Sekolah Dasar" adalah inisiatif edukatif yang dirancang untuk meningkatkan kesadaran lingkungan di kalangan siswa Sekolah Dasar, khususnya kelas 2. Melalui kegiatan ini, siswa diperkenalkan pada konsep ecobrick sebagai solusi inovatif dalam pengelolaan sampah plastik. Kegiatan ini melibatkan 26 siswa, yang tidak hanya mempelajari teori, tetapi juga mendapatkan pengalaman langsung dalam membuat ecobrick dari sampah plastik yang mereka kumpulkan. Proses ini mencakup pengenalan konsep, demonstrasi pembuatan, dan sesi praktek kelompok. Selain itu, terdapat 2 guru pendamping yang berperan aktif dalam membimbing siswa selama proses pembuatan, serta memastikan setiap siswa memahami dan menguasai teknik yang diajarkan. Tujuan utama kegiatan ini adalah membekali siswa dengan keterampilan praktis dalam mendaur ulang plastik, meningkatkan pemahaman mereka tentang dampak negatif sampah plastik, serta mendorong sikap proaktif dalam menjaga kebersihan lingkungan. Setelah sesi edukasi dan praktek pembuatan ecobrick, hasil post-test menunjukkan peningkatan yang sangat mencolok, yaitu sekitar 85% siswa dapat menjawab dengan benar tentang langkah-langkah pembuatan ecobrick dan 90% memahami manfaat ecobrick bagi lingkungan. Peningkatan ini tidak hanya mencerminkan pemahaman yang lebih baik terhadap materi yang diajarkan, tetapi juga menunjukkan efektivitas metode pembelajaran yang diterapkan dalam kegiatan ini. Environmental Action: Ecobrick Making Practice in Elementary School Abstract The "Environmental Action: Ecobrick Making Practice in Elementary School" activity is an educational initiative designed to raise environmental awareness among elementary school students, especially grade 2. Through this activity, students are introduced to the concept of ecobricks as an innovative solution in managing plastic waste. This activity involves 26 students, who not only learn the theory, but also gain hands-on experience in making ecobricks from the plastic waste they collect. This process includes an introduction to the concept, a demonstration of making, and a group practice session. In addition, there are 2 accompanying teachers who play an active role in guiding students during the making process, as well as ensuring that each student understands and masters the techniques taught. The main objectives of this activity are to equip students with practical skills in recycling plastic, increase their understanding of the negative impacts of plastic waste, and encourage a proactive attitude in maintaining environmental cleanliness. After the educational session and practice of making ecobricks, the post-test results showed a very striking increase, namely around 85% of students were able to answer correctly about the steps for making ecobricks and 90% understood the benefits of ecobricks for the environment. This improvement not only reflects a better understanding of the material taught, but also shows the effectiveness of the learning methods applied in this activity.

Abstract

This research uses a descriptive qualitative approach and involves interviews with teachers as well as the implementation of materials through educational games and 3D media. The results show that although student engagement increased, there were challenges in understanding the material and using technology that affected students' quiz scores. This research aims to enhance students' understanding of global issues, particularly global warming. The results are expected to positively impact education and environmental awareness among the sixth-grade students of SDN Krejengan.

Abstract

Background: Socialization of insurance as a financial education tool is one of the important efforts in improving financial literacy of the Indonesian people. In the context of community service, this activity aims to help the community understand the importance of risk management and strengthen the financial foundations of individuals and families. Methods: The methods used include counseling, interactive discussions, and case study simulations involving collaboration between educational institutions and local communities. Results: Overall, this activity not only succeeded in increasing participants' knowledge about insurance with an average score of 1.40 points or around 26.31%, but also opened up new opportunities for them to utilize insurance as a risk management tool and source of income. This activity can be optimized through community-based programs and integration of financial literacy into the formal education curriculum. Conclusions: In the context of community service, education about insurance not only helps the community understand the importance of risk management, but also strengthens the financial foundation of individuals and families. Collaboration with educational institutions and local communities can also increase community acceptance of insurance education. Counseling programs that focus on the specific needs of the community and the integration of financial literacy into the formal education curriculum are strategic steps that can optimize the positive impact of insurance socialization.

Abstract

This study investigates prospective elementary school teachers' misconceptions of the (+) and (?) symbols by exploring their perceptions in various mathematical contexts. The aim is to understand how students interpret these fundamental operations and identify potential challenges in their conceptualization. Since teachers’ understanding of mathematical symbols plays a crucial role in shaping students’ learning experiences, it is essential to uncover gaps between their conceptual and procedural knowledge. This study involved 65 undergraduate students majoring in elementary teacher education, selected to ensure a diverse range of academic backgrounds and experiences. Data were collected through written assessments and semi-structured interviews, then analyzed thematically to identify recurring misconceptions. The findings indicate that while students demonstrate procedural fluency in basic arithmetic, significant misunderstandings arise when dealing with negative numbers, inverse operations, and algebraic expressions. Many students perceive the minus sign solely as an operator rather than a representation of a negative value, leading to difficulties in interpreting mathematical expressions in different contexts. These results highlight the need for instructional approaches that emphasize conceptual understanding alongside procedural skills. The study contributes to mathematics education research by providing insights into how prospective teachers interpret mathematical symbols and offering recommendations for improving teacher preparation programs.

Abstract

Mahasiswa yang mempelajari bidang teknik memerlukan kemampuan analitis, matematika, kreativitas, pemecahan masalah, komunikasi, dan kerja sama tim yang kuat sehingga membutuhkan  keterampilan sains yang memadai. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis keterampilan sains mahasiswa Teknik Mesin dalam mempelajari topik bahan teknik logam fero dan non-fero, yang mencakup kemampuan mengajukan pertanyaan, melakukan observasi, berkomunikasi, menginterpretasikan data, dan menerapkan konsep. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kuantitatif dengan metode deskriptif, melibatkan 18 mahasiswa Teknik Mesin Universitas Hasyim Asy’ari sebagai subjek penelitian. Data dikumpulkan melalui angket berbasis skala Likert 1-5, yang telah divalidasi oleh ahli. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa keterampilan sains mahasiswa secara keseluruhan berada pada kategori sedang, dengan mayoritas skor terkonsentrasi pada tingkat 2 dan 3 di semua aspek yang diukur. Tidak ada satupun mahasiswa yang memberikan nilai sempurna (skor 5) pada indikator mana pun, yang menunjukkan adanya celah antara pemahaman teoritis dan penerapan praktis. Aspek observasi dan interpretasi data memperoleh skor relatif lebih rendah, mengindikasikan perlunya pengembangan lebih lanjut dalam kemampuan analisis dan komunikasi hasil. Temuan ini merekomendasikan adanya inovasi dalam proses pembelajaran, seperti penerapan pembelajaran berbasis proyek (project-based learning) dan pendekatan kolaboratif yang lebih intensif. Strategi tersebut diharapkan mampu menciptakan pengalaman belajar yang kontekstual, sehingga dapat meningkatkan keterampilan sains mahasiswa teknik secara lebih komprehensif dan efektif, sekaligus mempersiapkan mereka menghadapi tuntutan dunia kerja. _______________________________________________________________________________________ Students studying engineering require strong analytical, mathematical, creative, problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skills, thus requiring adequate science skills. This study aims to analyze the science skills of Mechanical Engineering students in studying the topic of ferrous and non-ferrous metal engineering materials, which include the ability to ask questions, make observation, communicate, interpret data, and apply concepts. This study employed a quantitative approach with a descriptive method, involving 18 Mechanical Engineering students of Hasyim Asy'ari University as research subjects. Data were collected through a questionnaire  a using a 5-point Likert scale , which has been validated by experts. The results showed that students' overall science skills were in the moderate category, with the majority of scores concentrated at levels 2 and 3 across all measured aspects. No students achieved the maximum score (5) on any indicator, indicating a gap between theoretical understanding and practical application. The aspects of observation and data interpretation scored relatively lower, indicating a need for further development in analytical and communication skills. These findings suggest  innovations in the learning process, such as the implementation of project-based learning and a more intensive collaborative approach. These strategies are expected to create contextual learning experiences, thereby enhancing engineering students' science skills more comprehensively and effectively, while simultaneously preparing them for the demands of the workplace.

Abstract

Background: Pernikahan anak masih menjadi persoalan krusial di wilayah perdesaan, termasuk Desa Banjarsari, yang berdampak pada kesehatan reproduksi, psikologis, serta masa depan pendidikan remaja. Kurangnya pemahaman mengenai risikonya menjadi faktor utama pendorong praktik tersebut. Kegiatan pengabdian ini bertujuan meningkatkan kesadaran siswa SMP dan SMA tentang risiko pernikahan usia muda melalui edukasi kesehatan reproduksi dan mental. Metode: Participatory Action Research (PAR) dengan pendekatan partisipatif melalui diskusi kelompok, pemutaran video, dan pembuatan poster kampanye. Kegiatan dilaksanakan selama satu bulan di dua sekolah dengan melibatkan 60 siswa. Hasil: Hasil pre-test dan post-test menunjukkan peningkatan signifikan pemahaman siswa terhadap dampak pernikahan anak serta munculnya komitmen untuk menunda pernikahan hingga menyelesaikan pendidikan. Kesimpulan: Pendekatan edukasi kontekstual berbasis partisipasi terbukti efektif dalam meningkatkan kesadaran remaja perdesaan mengenai kesiapan usia dalam membangun rumah tangga.
