Abstract

The aims of this study were (1) to identify the main purpose of learning English, (2) to identify the students’ target needs and, (3) to identify the students’ learning needs of students’ grade XI in Piyungan 1 High School. This research was categorized as a survey study. The subjects of this study were XI grade senior high school students of Piyungan 1 High School and their English teacher. The students of Piyungan 1 have good standpoint toward online learning media. Internet as a medium in teaching and learning provides learners with more authentic learning environments. The students and teacher believe that online media such as weblog has certain facilities that can transform teaching and learning’s role from the teacher center to student-cantered

Abstract

The study aims to analyze the effectiveness of Telegram and WhatsApp in teaching English as a second language based on the insights gathered from the interviews and data obtained from various sources. The method used in this study is the qualitative descriptive method. The qualitative descriptive method allows for a detailed exploration of the participants’ experiences and perceptions, which is crucial in understanding their preferences and attitudes toward these communication platforms. The data used in this study was obtained through interviews with 2 English lecturers and 20 students who learned English through Telegram and WhatsApp. Data is also taken from books, journals, and the internet. Both of these applications can be an effective alternative to learning English compared to Zoom, especially in the current post-pandemic that limits face-to-face teaching and learning activities. The advantages and disadvantages of each application must be considered and matched to the needs and preferences of each individual before deciding to use a particular application as an English learning medium.

Abstract

This study analyzes the need to learn English among new students at STIT Tanggamus. This analysis was carried out by distributing questionnaires to 100 respondents, consisting of new students. The study results showed that as many as 95% of respondents needed to learn English. In terms of importance, 89% of respondents stated that learning English is essential for their future. As many as 70% of respondents stated that they do not yet have good speaking skills and need help improving them. Based on these research findings, it can be concluded that the need to learn English is very high among new students at STIT Tanggamus. Therefore, educational institutions must provide adequate facilities and resources to meet these English learning needs.
