Abstract

Scientific literacy skills are very important in the learning process and daily life. Scientific literacy does not arise suddenly but requires a facilitator who enables it. One of these is the application of learning models that have the potential to improve scientific literacy. A learning model that has the potential to improve science literacy skills is Problem-Based Learning one of which is RICOSRE. This study aims to investigate the effect of RICOSRE on the science literacy skills of grade X students compared to PBL and conventional models. This study involved 94 students from SMA Progresif Bumi Shalawat Sidoarjo, East Java, Indonesia, and employed a pretest-posttest design with a non-equivalent controls group. The pretest and posttest consisted of 8 essay questions each. ANCOVA and LSD tests to analyze student scores. The results indicated a significant effect of RICOSRE on the students’ scientific literacy skills. The student’s average score on scientific literacy skills increased considerably (45,23%) on RICOSRE and PBL (15.73%) and decreased in conventional learning by 4.57%. RICOSRE can be implemented to empower students' scientific literacy skills. These results indicate that RICOSRE is proven to be more effective in improving students' scientific literacy skills compared to PBL and conventional learning models.

Abstract

The Drosophila Climbing Assay (DCA) is an essential assay for disease and other biological studies. This systematic literature review (SLR) aims to analyze DCA's distribution, treatment, and contribution during the 21st Century. VosViewer was also involved in analyzing the bibliometric and gap analysis in related studies. By using the Scopus database and limiting document types to journal articles, a total of 183 documents have been successfully collected in this SLR. After going through a selection process based on inclusion and exclusion criteria and eligibility assessment through the PRISMA procedure, 163 articles remain that can be analyzed. Behaviour, model, activity, expression, lifespan, and disease are terms that often equate to studies involving the DCA procedure. The U.S., China, and India are the three countries that most frequently report DCA. DCA has been involved intensively in behaviour, Parkinson's, and nervous system research. The co-occurrence analysis resulted in 5 clusters, and the DCA procedure to study the impact of nutrient stress and nanoparticles resulted from the identified gap analysis.

We have developed a hologram-based learning media innovation, 3D Holo-learning DNA, and we disseminated it. The purpose of this dissemination activity is to introduce 3D Holo-learning DNA learning media to teachers involved in the Biology Subject Teacher Conference (MGMP) Madrasah Aliyah (MA) Malang Regency. The method used in this dissemination activity consists of four stages. First, the planning stage by conducting a Focus Discussion Group (FGD). Second, the preparation stage of the things needed during the implementation stage. Third, the implementation stage by delivering materials and simulating the learning media developed to the participants. Fourth, the evaluation stage by analyzing the responses of activity participants related to learning media products. The results of the dissemination activities obtained from the activity participants' response questionnaires show that learning media products have good usefulness, which is 4.66 out of 5.00 to be applied in learning. The innovation of this 3D Holo-learning DNA media is to help visualize the structure of DNA and chromosomes more realistically, when compared to visualizations derived from printed books. This media development is expected to provide benefits for biology teachers.

Abstract

Genetics has become important in various areas of life, especially in healthcare. People can undergo a range of genetic testing to assess their susceptibility to acquiring diseases. Nevertheless, data derived from genetic testing might indicate bias due to genetic determinism and essentialism. This study aimed to provide a comprehensive analysis of the impact of genetic determinism and essentialism on several aspects of healthcare. This study conducted a systematic review approach using the Scopus database and followed the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta analysis (PRISMA) search framework. We initially received 802 publications, then reduced to 49 articles based on inclusion and exclusion criteria, and then content analysis was conducted. Our research showed that determinist bias and genetic essentialism may reduce patient diagnosis, treatment accuracy, and effectiveness. Moreover, biases related to genetic determinism and essentialism may go against healthcare regulations and cause discrimination and other negative clinical outcomes from ethical, social, and legal aspects. To improve this problem, it is essential for laypeople, particularly medical experts, to understand genetic principles related to the development of variances in traits among individuals in a precise and relatable approach.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract. Zubaidah S, Fauzi A, Setiawan D, Mulyati Y, Choirunisa’ N, Zahrah NA. 2025. Wing morphological changes in Drosophila melanogaster exposed to Bisphenol-A and Acrylamide. Biodiversitas 26: 4567-4576. Bisphenol-A (BPA) and acrylamide are two contaminants commonly found in processed food and beverage products. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of acute exposure to BPA and acrylamide contaminants on changes in Drosophila melanogaster wing morphology. The use of wings is based on their sensitivity to environmental changes and is one of the important organs for locomotion and mating in flies. In this study, the wild-type, black, and white strains of D. melanogaster were cultured for two generations to observe the acute exposure to these two contaminants. The statistical analysis showed that acute exposure to BPA and acrylamide for two generations did not correlate strongly with wing length and width changes in the population of the three D. melanogaster strains (p<0.01). We suspect that the lack of correlation may be influenced by the non-monotonic nature of BPA, the detoxification pathway of acrylamide, and exposure studies that are still limited to acute exposure. Of all flies observed, no wing morphological changes were found in the control group. However, <15% of the group exposed to BPA and acrylamide showed wing deformities (e.g., curled, wrinkled, and notched, broken wing veins, detachment, failure in growth, and imperfections in the formation of wing edges or wing cells). The results of this study require further studies, especially on other aspects of the study and exposure over several generations, long enough to see the impact of chronic exposure to BPA and acrylamide over the next few generations.
