Abstract

SMA N 1 Lintau Buo has applied 2013 curriculum almost 5 years, but English teachers who teach there still face some problems in implementing it. This study aims to investigate English teachers’ problems and their strategies to overcome the problems. This study adopted descriptive qualitative design, and the data were collected through interview of three English teachers at SMAN 1 Lintau Buo. Finding showed that there were some problems faced in implementing 2013 curriculum. They got difficulties in using many types of authentic assessments and the rubrics, the shortage of English duration (2 credit hours) that made students were not ensure to improve their English competences at school, and difference materials between 2013 curriculum and 2006 curriculum (materials for UN especially for twelfth grade). To solve these problems, the teachers had different strategies. They used some of authentic assessments (affective and psychomotor), calculated and managed effective weeks, made lesson plans, prota and prosem properly in order to all materials can be taught to the students, and completed 2013 curriculum materials in first semester and focused on UN materials in second semester.Keywords: implementing 2013 curriculum, problems, strategies

Abstract

In this digital era, the emergence of technology for language instruction is unquestionable. Technology helps students learn a target language more quickly, easily, and happily than traditional methods. The non-English department requires extra inspiration, motivation, and a unique approach. As an ICT platform, Padlet is regarded as a creative medium for English learning. This study provides light on how the padlet application can be used to assist and motivate non-English Department students to learn English. This study utilized a quantitative methodology with a sample of 38 people. These participants were all first-year non-English Department Mandailing Natal, STAIN Mandailing Natal Sumatera Utara. The PIAUD (early childhood Islamic education) department had 19 participants, while the Perbankan Syariah (Islamic banking) department had 19 students. For data collection, the researcher utilized a questionnaire. The questionnaires collect baseline information regarding the use of padlet as an innovative medium for English learning. This study found that the majority of students (80%) believe padlet to be a suitable and dynamic medium for learning English, and students are motivated to study English. Abstract

The study period of study program graduates is one of the accreditation assessments carried out by The Independent Accreditation Agencies for Education or LAMDIK. The graduates have a study period is less than five years getting the highest point in the assessment matrix for criterion 9, namely tri-dharma outputs and achievements. However, most study program graduates from various universities in Indonesia completed their studies more than 4 years. This case also happened to graduates of Mathematics Education at IAIN Bukittinggi. There were 70% of graduates who completed their studies more than 4 years. The aim of this research was to determine factors that influence the graduates’ study period and their characteristics who were able to complete their studies for 4 years. This research was descriptive quantitative with a correlation study of 10 independent variable factors that affect the study period. By using total sampling, there were 340 graduates of Mathematics Education as a sample of this research. Documentation and questionnaires were used to collect the data. Then, the CHAID method was used to analyze the data. The result showed that, first, there were 5 independent variables that affect the graduates’ study period, namely the period of thesis completion, the gender, the major of high school, the mother’s occupation, and the track of university entrance. Second, there were 2 characteristics in which students can complete their studies for 4 years with a confidence level of 74,3%.  Keywords: Study Period, Mathematics Education Students, CHAID Method

Abstract

Penggunaan teknologi dalam dunia pendidikan memiliki peran penting untuk membuat mahasiswa tertarik untuk belajar menulis dalam bahasa Inggris. Artikel ini menjelaskan bagaimana penilaian sejawat berbasis blog dapat meningkatkan kemampuan menulis mahasiswa. Blog merupakan media yang menarik untuk berbagi hasil tulisan mahasiswa. Tidak hanya menggunakan blog, tetapi juga menggunakan penilaian sejawat yang merupakan cara untuk memberikan komentar terhadap tulisan mahasiswa oleh teman-temannya sehingga dapat meningkatkan kemampuan menulis mahasiswa. Artikel ini menggunakan tinjauan literatur terhadap penelitian-penelitian yang relevan mengenai penilaian sejawat berbasis blog yang terdapat dalam artikel, buku, dan sumber-sumber lainnya. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa penilaian sejawat berbasis blog dapat meningkatkan kemampuan menulis mahasiswa karena cara ini sangat menarik dan bermakna bagi mahasiswa. Cara ini juga merupakan cerminan dari pembelajar abad ke-21 yang menggunakan teknologi untuk mendapatkan pengetahuan dan keterampilan terutama dalam belajar bahasa Inggris.

Abstract

Students in junior high school felt anxiety and were afraid in learning English, so that their grades was quite good. They felt afraid and anxious when they made mistakes in speaking English because they were laughed by their friends. Then, they had no experience an learning English in primary school. The aim of this study is to identify the correlation between students’ anxiety and their Learning Achievement. The design of this research was correlation design. The population of this research were 67 students’ of seventh-grade students at SMP N 6 Padang. This research used cluster random sampling the sample was 31 students. To get the data this research used a questionnaire and test. To measure students’ anxiety using a tool the Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS). The data in this research were analyzed by using the Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient with SPSS 20 programs. The research result showed that the Coefficient of Product Moment was-0,784. It meant, there was a negative correlation between students‘ anxiety and their learning achievement ∝ was 0.05, so sig 0.00 less than 0.05. Negative science shows a significant relationship in reverse if the anxiety value is high then the value is low and if the value is high then the anxiety is low. It could be concluded that Ho was rejected and Ha was accepted. So the implication is that if the anxiety is high then the student's score is low and vice versa if the anxiety is low then the score is high.

Abstract

Kemampuan berbicara dalam Bahasa Inggris bagi mahasiswa Terapi Wicara Universitas Mercubaktijaya merupakan bagian yang penting. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk melihat sejauh mana peningkatan kemampuan berbicara bahasa Inggris mahasiswa Terapi Wicara Universitas Mercubaktijaya Lewat Teknik Diskusi Pola Piramida dalam aspek bahasa pemahaman, kelancaran dan pengucapan. Subjek penelitian adalah mahasiswa Universitas Mercubaktijaya pada prodi Speech Therapy sebanyak 30 orang. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan dengan penelitian tindakan kelas yaitu melakukan perencanaan, tindakan, observasi dan refleksi. Pelaksanaan dilakukan dengan dua siklus. Hasil tes pada masing-masing siklus dianalisa dengan deskriptif kuantitatif. Hasil pre-test pada pemahaman, kelancaran dan pengucapan adalah 1,7,1,6 dan 1,77 sedangkan pada hasil post-test siklus I adalah 2,23, 2,47 dan 2,67. Terjadi peningkatan pada post-test siklus II dengan hasil 3,13, 3,33, 3,40.  Peningkatan terjadi dalam pelaksanaan penelitian ini dan membuktikan bahwa teknik diskusi pola piramid memberikan peningkatan kemampuan berbicara mahasiswa Terapi Wicara Universitas Mercubaktijaya Kata Kunci: Berbicara, Mahasiswa Terapi Wicara, Teknik diskusi, Pola Piramida

Abstract

This study explores how group discussion activities can improve students’ confidence in speaking English at MA Asy-Syarif Sidang Koto Laweh, a pesantren-based senior high school. Many students initially struggled with anxiety, limited vocabulary, and hesitation when speaking. A descriptive qualitative method was used, involving two eleventh-grade classes. Data were collected through classroom observation, documentation, and informal interviews. The results show that group discussion significantly increased students’ willingness to speak, vocabulary recall, and overall participation. Working in small groups helped students feel more comfortable expressing ideas, receiving peer support, and practicing before presenting. Although each class showed different learning dynamics, both demonstrated positive improvement. This study concludes that group discussion is an effective strategy for enhancing students’ speaking confidence in EFL classrooms.

Abstract

Vocabulary plays a central role in students’ ability to understand and use English effectively, particularly in vocational education where learners are expected to apply language skills in practical, work-related contexts. This study examines whether there is a significant difference in vocabulary achievement between students who use Google Translate and those who use a paper dictionary during English learning. A comparative quantitative design was employed, involving two groups of tenth-grade students at SMK N 2 Bukittinggi. Ninety students were selected through simple random sampling and divided evenly into a Google Translate group and a paper dictionary group. A vocabulary test consisting of multiple-choice items was administered to measure students’ knowledge of word form, meaning, and use. The test results were analyzed using an independent sample t-test to compare the performance of the two groups. The findings show that the mean score of the paper dictionary group was slightly higher than that of the Google Translate group; however, the difference was not statistically significant. This indicates that both tools provide comparable support for vocabulary learning. The results suggest that the effectiveness of vocabulary acquisition does not depend solely on the type of tool used, but rather on how learners interact with the tool and apply vocabulary in meaningful contexts. The study underscores the value of allowing students to use either resource according to their preferences and highlights the importance of integrating both digital and traditional tools to promote balanced and strategic vocabulary learning in vocational classrooms.

Abstract

This research investigated the correlation between students’ language exposure and their writing ability. It was motivated by several issues identified among students, such as difficulties in expressing ideas effectively, inconsistencies in writing styles possibly influenced by different levels of language exposure, and a lack of familiarity with proper writing structures. The objective of this research was to determine whether there is a significant correlation between students’ language exposure and their writing ability among eighth-grade students. A correlational research design was employed in this research. The population consisted of 80 eighth-grade students, and total sampling was used to include all participants. The instruments used were a questionnaire and a writing test. The questionnaire contained 23 items to measure students’ language exposure, while the writing test required students to write a recount text based on one of four given topics. The data were analyzed using the Pearson Product Moment correlation through SPSS. The findings revealed a correlation coefficient of 0.755, indicating a strong and positive relationship between students’ language exposure and their writing ability. The results suggest that greater exposure to the English language significantly contributes to the improvement of students’ writing ability. It can be concluded that enhancing students’ engagement with English through various forms of exposure plays an important role in developing their writing proficiency.
